Some parts have changed a bit. I’ll eventually update with more recent pics…stay tuned] \nYou don’t see this on the usual Wildwood hike – an old barn. We’ll  pause here and maybe even play on some old farm equipment \n \nGroup Factoid: Over six years ago we were the first and only group to connect the upper Santa Rosa trail with the Lower Santa Rosa trail by marching down grass covered slopes. Since then an official trail has been built in the same location named the Shooting Star trail \nHere is a creek fed by Paradise Falls. There will be a couple of creek crossings on this hike. Nice\, huh? \n \nLizard Rock – Our first break spot. There will also be restrooms  later along the way at Sycamore Flats \n \n\nThere are two waterfalls in Wildwood Park. Here is Indian Falls. SUMMARY:🌻The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:A pre-Thanksgiving workout\, this one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails\, and they have gotten a lot more use since then. \nBlast from the past: Here are photos from the first group hike in December 2009: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=780881. Did you notice the ice on the trail? \nWith combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir (see if you can spot them in the photos below). We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. The hike is more strenuous than it sounds. \n\n\n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park \n—————————————————————————————————- \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Afternoon Delight: Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a potluck hike in the Los Robles Open Space. We will do the Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop among some beautiful oak groves and great views of the Conejo Valley. That will be about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM (see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \nThere are facilities at the trailhead including picnic benches. You can leave the food and drink in car during hike. \nHighlights along the way include the “Lily Tomlin” trail and “Sherwood Forest.” (not to be confused with the Sherwood Forest of my Pentachaeta Loop hike) \nGroup Trivia: We first did this hike in May 2008. Back then\, when I was living in Oak Park/Westlake Village\, it was the location of our infamous Sundowner Hikes. \nDirections to trailhead: \nFrom the 101 freeway exit Moorpark Rd. Drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. At that time Trailer canyon was closed due to Palisades fire and we had to change our starting point. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us for a the grand loop around 5\,000-acre Rocky Peak Park. RPP in the Santa Susana Mountains straddles the Los Angeles-Ventura county line at the eastern end of Simi Valley. A network of hiking trails weaves through the park that is home to deep oak-lined canyons\, trickling streams\, and massive\, sculpted sandstone formations with a moonscape appearance. \nOn November 11\, 2012 we did this one in the rain. See photos: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/90262762/ \nThe Hummingbird Trail\, at the base of Rocky Peak\, crosses Hummingbird Creek and climbs up a narrow canyon through open chaparral to the Rocky Peak Fire Road\, passing stacks of giant sandstone boulders\, sculpted caves\, and dramatic rock outcroppings. \nThe original Hummingbird Trail (and a popular alternate that goes by the Swing Cave) has been destroyed by the mountain bikers long ago. I have a new trail in the area that still remains virtually untouched by the knobs. I call it El Nido de Chuparosas trail \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nThe Chumash Trail ascends the west flank of Rocky Peak. The trail winds up the chaparral cloaked mountainside to the ridge north of Rocky Peak\, passing sculpted sandstone outcroppings\, caves\, fossils\, fault lines and a series of scenic overlooks and highland meadows. From Hamilton Saddle and the Rocky Peak Trail junction are panoramic views of the Simi Hills\, Simi Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, the Santa Susana Mountains\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, Blind Canyon\, and Las Llajas Canyon. \nRocky Peak gets its name from the many large craggy boulders that dot its surface. At 2\,715 feet Rocky Peak is the third-highest point in the Santa Susana Mountains\, and overlooks the San Fernando Valley and Chatsworth\, the Simi Hills\, and the Simi Valley in Southern California. \nThe peak sits on the Los Angeles County–Ventura County line and marks the point where the county line changes direction from true North to a more North-Westerly direction. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nWe begin hiking at Trippet Ranch\, walking north on a paved driveway about 100 yards to where the Musch Trail slants to the right across a grassy hillside. \n \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nOn that trail we’ll plunge into the shade of oak and bay laurel trees. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. We begin to see Eagle Rock looming over ravines plunging south toward the sea. The rock\, a sandstone outcrop pitted with small caves\, is a good example of the 15-million-year-old Topanga Canyon Formation that crops out in various parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. \n \nWe’ll return to Trippet Ranch via the rolling East Topanga Fire Road. Hike is about 5 miles. \nBring a snacks and drink to share and we’ll usher in the New Year \n[vc_message style=”square” message_box_color=”warning” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-area-chart”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY+. The Cold Creek Preserve protects the headwaters of Cold Creek\, one of the few year-round streams in the Santa Monica Mountains. The extravagant lushness of the riparian vegetation growing in Cold Creek Canyon Preserve today is astonishing. \nThe Cold Creek Watershed is best described as a bowl\, albeit with one side missing\, made up of steep slopes\, high ridges\, and incredible rock formations. Nestled steeply behind Saddle Peak (El. 2805’)\, its north-facing slopes are cool and shady. The headwaters of Cold Creek spring out of the ground year-round providing a reliable source of cool\, fresh water for the animal populations. During winter months you will see swarms of ladybugs wintering-over en masse waiting for the first warm winds of spring to disperse them to their feeding and egg-laying grounds. Spring comes late to north-facing slopes and there is often a fascinating display of flowers blooming well into October. \nHighlights include an old dodge truck hastily abandoned during a 1973 fire\, the Weeping Rock\, the Fern Grotto\, and the ” Boulder House” built from a huge sandstone boulder in early 1900s by German homesteader Herman Hethke. SUMMARY:Solstice Canyon - Sostomo - Deer Valley Loop - Malibu Seafood Lunch (byob)
DESCRIPTION:Solstice Canyon is the quintessential coastal canyon. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past. During our trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will extend the classic Solstice Canyon hike by taking the Sostomo Trail and Deer Valley Loop Trail. The trail meanders through chaparral and coastal sage scrub to the western ridge of Solstice Canyon. After a couple of stream crossings we will encounter breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for the ruins of several cabins burned in past wildfires. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1800 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. Ok to bring your own beverage – wine\, beer\, soda…. \nDirections: \nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Turn left and proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd. \nEvent rules:\n1. Carpooling is desirable \n2. All hikers must stay on established trails \n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails. \n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. SUMMARY:Temescal Canyon Special
DESCRIPTION:Temescal Canyon is a very popular hiking spot with great views of the ocean and LA basin on clear days\, a seasonal waterfall\, and a densely wooded canyon. This looped hike is a nice workout at about 5 miles with a net elevation gain of about 1\,200 ft. \nBut this won’t be your typical Temescal trek! \nWe’ll begin at the lower end of the first parking lot and walk along Temescal Creek on the Sunset Trail. After 0.4 miles we’ll head up the Ridge Trail under chaparral arches with some nice views of the Palisades and the Pacific Ocean beyond. \nAfter a brief climb we’ll take our first detour and dip into the El Medio neighborhood\, walk up the street a bit\, then climb the western side of Temescal Ridge and back up to the Ridge Trail. \n \nAfter a sustained climb we’ll turn west on the Leacock Trail toward wide ocean views. Then we will turn onto the less traveled Bienveneda Trail which will take us back up to Temescal Ridge. \n \nWe then descend into Temescal Canyon\, dropping through chaparral and heavier vegetation\, reaching the canyon floor and cross a foot bridge just downstream of a small waterfall. We’ll can go off-trail to get a closer look. \n \nAt the bottom of the canyon we’ll do our 2nd detour: a “shortcut” up to the Rivas Canyon Trail and subsequently down the official trail back down to Temescal Canyon. \nWe’ll hike along the creek back to our meeting spot as the the trail transforms into an easy stroll through pleasant groves. \n \nDirections \nTemescal Gateway Park is located in Pacific Palisades\, just one mile north of Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Boulevard. \nPark for free on Sunset or Temescal\, or enter park and use the first pay lot on the left. Meet outside park on NW corner under Park Sign \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Santa Monica Freeway (10) West until it becomes Pacific Coast Highway(PCH). Continue West on PCH. Turn right (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile. Park on street \nFrom the Conejo and San Fernando Valley\, take Topanga Canyon Boulevard South to Pacific Coast highway(PCH). Turn left (East) on PCH. Go Left (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile. The first half mile contains a 500 ft elevation gain. The next couple miles has adds another few hundred feet along rolling hills. After that its all downhill on the Phantom Trail into Liberty Canyon. We will exit the Preserve on Liberty Canyon Trail and return to Agoura Rd along residential Liberty Canyon Rd. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and will be about 6 miles with 1\,500 feet of total ascent. DESCRIPTION:Our hike will be steeped in local history and lore. We’ll begin our trek at Chatsworth Park South where we’ll find our way to the Old Stagecoach Rd. From the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd we’ll hook up with the Mattingly Trail and take that to the Spahn Ranch. We’ll return via the El Camino Nuevo. \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch\nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \n[asa2 tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” align=”center” ajax=”1″ id=”100815″]B07VQ73762[/asa2] \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson#Manson_Family) to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor. \nDon’t forget to participate in a family photo! \n[vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”100827\,100826″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large” custom_links_target=”_blank”] \nA wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nThe Old Stagecoach Road\nAnother HWD regular\, The Old Stagecoach Road was built In 1859. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be hiking along the notorious Devils Slide segment which will be the most difficult segment with 400′ gain in half mile. \nHere we are at the 80th anniversary of the dedication and plaque installation and \n \nHere is a video from the original dedication \n \nEl Camino Nuevo\nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. It was replaced in 1917 by an improved asphalt paved Santa Susana Pass Road that is still traveled today. \nWe’ll be hiking along the old grade which was replaced by the familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917 \nIn this 1900 photo of the old grade I have indicated some retaining walls built of dimensional sandstone from the Bannon quarry. The walls are still there and I will point then out during hike. \n \nFlorence and Charles Mattingly\nThe Mattingly’s lived in Los Angeles where Charles was a prominent attorney. They purchased two 160 acre properties in 1909 and 1912. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers.\n \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a snack break at Century Lake. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down To RSVP” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The secret recesses of Upper Rustic Canyon and it’s shady “bay tree” tributary\, invite the avid local hiker on an adventurous loop hike on unmarked and partially overgrown trails along some of the most rugged sections of the Santa Monica Mountains. \nAt the outset we descend into Upper Rustic Canyon where we will be joined by scattered live oak and a nice mixture of sycamores\, willows\, bay laurels\, ferns and assorted riparian plants — hallmarks of a year round water supply\, at least underground. Much of the hiking here is along an uneven creek bed. \nThere may be some poison oak along the creek. Bring some Tecnu \n[asa2 tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” ajax=”1″]B000A7S3WK[/asa2] \nWe exit Upper Rustic by way of the Bay Tree Trail. A dense grove of bay laurel tree stumps sprouted here after the 1978 Mandeville Canyon fire\, creating what is surely one of the most densely shaded spots in the Santa Monica Mountains. SUMMARY:Bulldog Loop - 14.5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This 14.5 mile hike begins at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon and proceeds up Mesa Peak Motorway. After about about 6 miles of uphill trekking with ocean views\, we reach the top of Corral Canyon where we can do some optional rock climbing\, take a break\, snack\, horse around\, etc. See picture. \nThen we leave the Backbone Trail toward Castro Crest and Bulldog Motorway where we begin our descent into Malibu Creek State Park. We’ll hike through the MASH site and traverse MCSP\, climb some more hills and enter Tapia Park and return to our vehicle. We’ll stop a couple more times along the way. Set your calendar for Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains. \nStarting on Angeles Hwy\, we’ll be taking the scenic rout to the summit ascending Colby Canyon along a narrow trail to Josephine Saddle. There we will cross a ridge to take Josephine Peak Road up to the 5\,558-foot summit and pull in expansive views north and west over Big Tujunga Canyon and southwest out of the mountains toward downtown Los Angeles and surrounding cities. \nWe’ll return via the wide Josephine Peak Fireroad\, the Nature’s Canteen Trail and a bit of Hwy for a 8 mile loop with about 2\,700 ft total ascent. The hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. SUMMARY:Loop Hike to Abandoned Pool\, Bee Rock and Old LA Zoo -- Griffith Park
DESCRIPTION:We don’t get into Griffith Park much but when we do its special. On this trek I’ll take you to an abandoned pool on top of a hill. \nThe pool was originally built in the 1920’s for a girls camp. The camp was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and a new camp was built slightly lower on the hill – as a boys camp. A new girls camp was built as well\, but further west. The pool remained in use by the boy’s camp until 1987 when it was closed after a bigger pool was built in the camp. \nOur hike will begin at the Fern Canyon Nature Trail. We’ll swing through the remains of the Old LA Zoo on the way up the hill to the pool. We’ll take a break at a lonely picnic bench by a memorial to Paul Ritschel\, a Sierra Club member who led monthly night hikes in the Park from 1969 to 1972. \nOn our return we’ll (trespass) through the new camp\, visit Bee Rock and another section of the Old Zoo \nWe’ll stay off the wide trails/roads as much as possible (of course) and on ridge-top use trails instead. The NO FIREROADS rule will be in effect! \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain

Let’s celebrate with a PotLuck & BBQ at Oak Canyon Community Park — we’ll do a hike also — and reminisce about the past 1.5 decades and plan for the next. \nOak Canyon Community Park is a beautiful\, 60-acre park with sandstone cliffs and a year-round creek. The park has a nature trail that loops through an oak forest\, crossing several times over Medea Creek. Near the trailhead is manmade waterfall cascading into a duck pond . \nThere are a couple of hiking options from EASY to MEDIUM. We’ll walk through the park and out to the north along the Suicide Trail and return via the China Flats Trail for a loop ending along Medea Creek and the Duck Pond. I’ll have more trail details later \nCovered picnic tables will be waiting for us on our return. \n🍷 Parking\, trailhead and picnic tables are in same area. Keep food/drink in car and bring out after hike. Please use the comment section to list the items you will be bringing. 🍽️ \nI predict a nice and sunny day. Bring plenty of water\, hat\, trail snacks and sunscreen. \nDirections: From U.S. 101 in Agoura\, exit on Kanan Road and drive north three miles to Hollytree Drive. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves - Vanalden Vista
DESCRIPTION:The **Natoma Loop Trail** is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of little-used trails. We’ll visit the **Vanalden Caves** and take a break on **Vanalden Vista.** \n**NOTE**: On our last visit here one of my secret trails was blocked by tree branches and scrub. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon and the Western Plateau Loop
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do my classic loop as depicted in these\nphotos from May 2015: [https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744](https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744) \n…about 7 miles and 1500′ gain \nWe’ll take our snack break at the KCLU-FM antenna \n**History of Hill Canyon**\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \n**Directions to trailhead** \nUse Google Map and drive to address.
