SUMMARY:🥂🎂Birthday & 👴Retirement Hike - Lunch at Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:My 65th birthday and retirement day is coming up\, and I can’t wait to celebrate with my hiking buddies at one of our favorite hiking and post-hike lunching spots. \nI am planning a hike in Corral Canyon with lunch at Malibu Seafood and you are cordially invited. SO SAVE THE DATE! \nThe great thing about Malibu Seafood — besides the food and beach views — is they allow you to bring your own beverages (including alcohol) and they are located at the trailhead so no driving required. Leave your beverages in the car until you return from hike. \nI’ll be arranging two hikes: one easy and one medium. Stay tuned for details. \nFree street parking is available

SUMMARY:Ridge Route to Parker Mesa Overlook - Los Liones Loop - Reel Inn
DESCRIPTION:Perched high above the Palisades and Malibu\, the vista from the Parker Mesa Overlook is stunning. You can see all of the LA basin laid out before you\, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the crescent shaped coastline of Santa Monica to the east. \nWe’ll have a post-hike lunch at the Reel Inn. Read on… \nThis isn’t your usual Parker Mesa Hike! Our ridge route starts near the Los Liones Canyon trailhead and makes a bee-line up a ridge to the Overlook with a 1400 ft gain in a mere 1.5 miles. Some parts are steep and loose. You’ve been warned! \nCheck out my Top 10 trekking poles. Order one or two today! https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \n \nAt the top\, on the Parker Mesa Overlook\, there are a couple of benches where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Los Angeles coastline and a snack. We’ll take an extended break here to allow everyone to catch up \n \nWe will return via the hilly side trails of E Topanga Fireroad\, and the beautiful Los Liones Canyon \n \nThe Los Liones Trail weaves through a lush canyon just a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Slivers of big blue sea can be seen from much of the ivy and chaparral-lined canyon \n***The No Fireroad rule will be in effect!*** \nThis strenuous hike is rated DIFFICULT. Its a relatively short 5-mile loop\, but packs a wallop with about 2100 feet of total ascent. See https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nPost hike lunch will be at the Reel Inn on PCH and Topanga \nDirections \nFrom Santa Monica or Malibu: Take the Pacific Coast Highway and turn on Sunset Boulevard. Go 0.3 miles on Sunset\, take a left on Los Liones and drive half a mile to the end of the street. Park on the right side of the street in the lot across from the church. \nThere is plenty of free street parking\, as well as two lots near picnic areas and restrooms. Hike starts at 9am\, not the parking.

SUMMARY:Baron Ranch Trails on Gaviota Coast - Post-hike Coastal Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard of the Baron Ranch hiking trails? Most folks haven’t\, but it’s a splendid — and sometimes shady — trail a couple miles west of Refugio State Beach and it’s worth the trip. \nAnd if that’s not enough\, we’ll have a picnic at Refugio SB after the hike where Ann and I have reserved two campsites. \nThe hike is about a 6.9 mile lollipop with 1\,300′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nOur hike begins in the canyon that forms the Arroyo Quemado Creek watershed. The trail follows a network of ranch roads leading through a habitat restoration area and into the backcountry. \nThe first mile of the trail is relatively flat and follows the bottom of the canyon. Just beyond the one-mile mark the road transitions into the riparian zone and continues to parallel the creek\, it’s here that the trail starts to take on a more wilderness feel. \nAt 2.1 miles and 2.6 miles\, the trail splits to form a loop up into the mountains. The upper portion of the Loop Trail provides some exceptional vistas down the canyon and out towards the ocean with views of the island on a clear day. Views along the canyons open up to reveal the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. At the top of the loop\, the single-track section of the Loop Trail trail connects again to a ranch road and then returns to the beginning of the loop and the main trail. \n[Note. The trail is currently closed until 9/17 due to the recent restrictions placed on California’s National Forests in order to prevent fire activity.] \nDIRECTIONS \n– Take Hwy 101 North\, 2.4 miles past Refugio Road and exit\n– Turn right at the road crossing onto Arroyo Quemada Ln. (Watch for the yellow sign indicating “cross-traffic ahead”).\n– Immediately turn left onto Calle Real and proceed approximately 3/4 mile until the road reaches a street sign that says “End”.\n– Use the circle to turn around and park along Calle Real.

SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - Fossil Ridge - PacBell Tower
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nInstead of the usual destination – the graffiti covered Topanga Lookout – we will head over to the old PacBell towers. \nThis is a 9 mile hike with over 1500 ft elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nHighlights include the sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, Topanga Lookout and the Bragg home in the Bay Tree Woodland. (Paul C. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30?s and 40?s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire). \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!

SUMMARY:La Jolla Valley - Chumash - Ray Miller Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. We’ll return to our cars via the Ray Miller Trail – the western terminus of the Backbone Trail \nHere us the view from the Ray Miller Trail \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 12 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT due to mileage and terrain. See the HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nBring at least 2qt water\, snacks/lunch \nDirections to Trailhead\nThere is free parking on PCH near park entrance. If you have to park inside there is an iron ranger that accepts credit cards\, or maybe even a human at the gate. We’ll meet at park entrance on PCH \nFrom Los Angeles\, after a long and relaxing drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (22 miles past Malibu Canyon)\, you’ll enter Ventura County and pass the so-called “Great Sand Dune.” Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Park on PCH on either side of entrance. \nFrom Ventura: Entrance is a couple miles after Las Posas. Park on land side of PCH on either side of entrance.

SUMMARY:Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n \nHike will be about 3 miles with 550 ft total ascent. Hike is rated as EASY. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nIt’s short\, but offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nDirections \nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street. There is plenty of street parking \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:🎃💀12th Annual Chatsworth Halloween Hike ☠ Night Version 👻
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ve been doing this one in Chatsworth/Twin Lakes since 2009. It’s the scariest hike this side of Transylvania! \nDue to ongoing development in the area our exact path is unknown at this time\, but I estimate it to be about 3 miles with 700′ elevation gain. I will have more accurate figures after pre-scouting the area. \nThe decorations are a little worn and I don’t know if the solar lights are still working\, but it will be a fun hike. There is a nice spot where we can share some drinks and small bites — so bring the “good stuff” \nAnd remember NO WHITE LIGHTS – red or green only. There is still time to order one of these headlamps – one uses batteries\, the other is rechargeable. Both are red/green/white. \n[asa2_collection show_prime=”no” title_length=”50″ savings_text_style=”long” max_width=”2000″ max_row_items=”3″ tpl=” Flex_1″ width=”50%”]1[/asa2_collection] \nCostumes are optional: https://amzn.to/2n5iZyX \nHere are some photos from last year: \nhttps://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/03115251/Halloween.mp4\n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE. SUMMARY:Historic Hike to the Calabasas Stairs
DESCRIPTION:A loop hike filled with local history and a set of stairs. What more can you ask for? Our hike will begin at the west end of Calabasas Rd where “The Trail Between Two Valleys” was dedicated in 2005 \nThis is the path the Juan Bautista De Anza party took in 1776 connecting the San Fernando Valley and Las Virgenes Valley while establishing missions along the way from Mexico to San Francisco. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nOne of the attractions along this trail is a more than 100-year old section of US 101\, known at the time as Ventura Rd aka El Camino Real. Here are a couple of sections from when the road was widened in 1924. I shot the first on 8/2006. Fellow member Bruce cleaned up the area about 8 years ago and revealed the contractor’s name \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636135955940-ecfa2dbe-08b4-3″ include=”99612\,99611″] \nWe’ll then connect to the Anza Loop Trail and into Calabash Canyon where we’ll come across some interesting artifacts. This pair of photos is from 8/2006 when I first explored the area. The trail was once an active jeep road. \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636134706146-b1d765a0-a2a7-9″ include=”99617\,99616″] \nAfter some switchbacks\, grassy hillsides and wooded canyons we’ll make a side trip to the Calabasas Stairs\, a straight up-and-down shot rising a total of 375 steps. The stairs are a tenth of a mile long and climb 185 feet of elevation. \nBut before we get to the stairs we’ll need to climb an old set of steps (photo is from 2/2020) \n[vc_media_grid element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636135955941-8d3361a2-80ba-6″ include=”99628\,99627″] \nWe will then return to the cars along sloping grasslands. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections\nDrive to the western end of Calabasas Rd and park in cul-de-sac

If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (class 0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abandoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. DESCRIPTION:With two waterfalls\, scenic volcanic outcroppings\, a variety of hiking trails\, several pleasant picnic areas\, and abundant open space\, Wildwood park is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the nearby city. \n \n  \nSome of the highlights along the way: \nMont Clef Ridge \nSanta Rosa Valley \nBox Canyon \nLizard Rock \nSkunk Hollow \nParadise Falls \nIndian Creek \nAnd would you believe it\, a train? \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \n[Note: the following is from an old hike. Some parts have changed a bit. I’ll eventually update with more recent pics…stay tuned] \nYou don’t see this on the usual Wildwood hike – an old barn. We’ll  pause here and maybe even play on some old farm equipment \n \nGroup Factoid: Over six years ago we were the first and only group to connect the upper Santa Rosa trail with the Lower Santa Rosa trail by marching down grass covered slopes. Since then an official trail has been built in the same location named the Shooting Star trail \nHere is a creek fed by Paradise Falls. There will be a couple of creek crossings on this hike. SUMMARY:🌻The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:A pre-Thanksgiving workout\, this one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails\, and they have gotten a lot more use since then. \nBlast from the past: Here are photos from the first group hike in December 2009: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=780881. Did you notice the ice on the trail? \nWith combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir (see if you can spot them in the photos below). We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. The hike is more strenuous than it sounds. \n\n\n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park \n—————————————————————————————————- \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE at https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n[Note: This hike was previously scheduled for last May 15. At that time Trailer canyon was closed due to Palisades fire and we had to change our starting point. Today we will hike it as originally planned] \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Hummingbird - Rocky Peak - Chumash Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us for a the grand loop around 5\,000-acre Rocky Peak Park. RPP in the Santa Susana Mountains straddles the Los Angeles-Ventura county line at the eastern end of Simi Valley. A network of hiking trails weaves through the park that is home to deep oak-lined canyons\, trickling streams\, and massive\, sculpted sandstone formations with a moonscape appearance. \nOn November 11\, 2012 we did this one in the rain. See photos: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/90262762/ \nThe Hummingbird Trail\, at the base of Rocky Peak\, crosses Hummingbird Creek and climbs up a narrow canyon through open chaparral to the Rocky Peak Fire Road\, passing stacks of giant sandstone boulders\, sculpted caves\, and dramatic rock outcroppings. \nThe original Hummingbird Trail (and a popular alternate that goes by the Swing Cave) has been destroyed by the mountain bikers long ago. I have a new trail in the area that still remains virtually untouched by the knobs. I call it El Nido de Chuparosas trail \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nThe Chumash Trail ascends the west flank of Rocky Peak. The trail winds up the chaparral cloaked mountainside to the ridge north of Rocky Peak\, passing sculpted sandstone outcroppings\, caves\, fossils\, fault lines and a series of scenic overlooks and highland meadows. From Hamilton Saddle and the Rocky Peak Trail junction are panoramic views of the Simi Hills\, Simi Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, the Santa Susana Mountains\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, Blind Canyon\, and Las Llajas Canyon. \nRocky Peak gets its name from the many large craggy boulders that dot its surface. At 2\,715 feet Rocky Peak is the third-highest point in the Santa Susana Mountains\, and overlooks the San Fernando Valley and Chatsworth\, the Simi Hills\, and the Simi Valley in Southern California. \nThe peak sits on the Los Angeles County–Ventura County line and marks the point where the county line changes direction from true North to a more North-Westerly direction. A large railroad spike driven into the rocks mark this exact spot on the county line. \nHike is appx 8 miles with about 2\,100 feet net elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT. See https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nBring plenty of water and snacks \nDirections to trailhead:\nTake the 118 Freeway and exit at KUEHNER. Turn North at the end of the off ramp and park at the end of Kuehner

SUMMARY:🎉First Hike of the Year: Musch Loop to Eagle Rock
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nWe begin hiking at Trippet Ranch\, walking north on a paved driveway about 100 yards to where the Musch Trail slants to the right across a grassy hillside. \n \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nOn that trail we’ll plunge into the shade of oak and bay laurel trees. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. We begin to see Eagle Rock looming over ravines plunging south toward the sea. The rock\, a sandstone outcrop pitted with small caves\, is a good example of the 15-million-year-old Topanga Canyon Formation that crops out in various parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. \n \nWe’ll return to Trippet Ranch via the rolling East Topanga Fire Road. Hike is about 5 miles. \nBring a snacks and drink to share and we’ll usher in the New Year \n[vc_message style=”square” message_box_color=”warning” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-area-chart”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY+. WERE DOING THIS HIKE IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE FIRST COUPLE MILES IS ON FIREROAD WITH 700′ ASCENT. See the Hike Ratings Guide[/vc_message] \n\n  \nDirections\nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the ranger in the park ($12?). If you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions. We’ll meet by the bathrooms (of course!). \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]JTNDc2NyaXB0JTIwdHlwZSUzRCUyMnRleHQlMkZqYXZhc2NyaXB0JTIyJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuYXZhbnRsaW5rLmNvbSUyRmFsZSUyRmFsZS5waHAlM0Z0aSUzRDEwMDk3JTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGc2NyaXB0JTNF[/vc_raw_js][vc_btn title=”Click/Tap here to RSVP” style=”outline-custom” outline_custom_color=”#666666″ outline_custom_hover_background=”#666666″ outline_custom_hover_text=”#ffffff” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.meetup.com%2Flocalhikers%2Fevents%2F282787335%2F|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
