SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nThis is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nWe were there in 8/2013 just after the Springs fire. We saw a veritable bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. Before the fire\, and probably now\, the only artifacts visible we’ll see are those that rise above the tall grass\, or ones we trip over. Check out the pics from that day: \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail. Its a little boring hiking back to PCH down Sycamore so perhaps we’ll take some side trails along the way — depending how tired we are \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Secret Trail to Coquina Mine - Post-Hike Picnic - VIPs Only
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nAs some of you know I have purchased an RV and will be integrating it into some of our hikes. As a practice run\, I’ve rented a RV space at Tapo Canyon Campground and will be leading a VIP hike in that area. When we return we’ll have a potluck get-together by my RV at the campground (its a short drive/long walk from trail head). Highlights along the way include tar pits and artifacts from an old ranch \nThis will be an exploratory hike I’ve wanted to do for years: a shortcut to the Coquina Mine\, aka the Steam Shovel in Chivo and Las Llajas Canyons. \nHere is the big picture of what we will try to accomplish.\nFor those of you who have done my infamous Las Llajas – Chivo loop this is a familiar area.  The yellow tracks are familiar trails we already use. The magenta line is where we will be doing some trail blazing. Aerial photos suggest there is a relatively clear path most of the way. (best viewed on a computer monitor) \n \nZooming in\, it appears there has been some traffic along my proposed route\, along with an alternate route. \n \nIf all goes according plan we will have blazed a trail that will take you to the Steam Shovel from Chivo Canyon (the usual way is via Las Llajas). Hopefully my fear of heights won’t get in the way \nWhen we are done we’ll meet back at my rv for a post-hike picnic/party \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 2000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nFrom the 118 take Yosemite Dr north toward the hills for 1.6 miles. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. Its a short walk back to the trailhead. Meet there at 9am \n \nTo get to Tapo Cyn Campground and the picnic\, continue on Cottonwood to Tapo Cyn Rd and turn Right for 2 miles. Campground will be on left\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\n\nThe official trail up Elliot Mountain (technically a peak at 1\,063 ft) was built May 2015. Below is a photo showing how we used to climb it. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliot who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. \n \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.”. At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \nLoading ...\nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nHere is a video of our hike from 2015\n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nPOST-HIKE LUNCH\nDon Cuco\, Moorpark\n254 Los Angeles Avenue\nDirections: https://goo.gl/maps/C3vN5WKidMZgTQ6X6\nhttp://doncucorestaurants.com/ \n  \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nDirections\nIf you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up \nHead to the address given. There is paid ($5) parking there. Keep going and little past that is free parking on the left.  We’ll meet in the free lot. Park in $5 lot if free lot is full. \n \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS:Head toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodlade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Satwiwa - Upper Sycamore Canyon - Old Boney - Fossil Trail Loop
DESCRIPTION:This site was home to the Chumash\, Spanish Rancho El Conejo\, and modern ranching and farming operations. For many years\, the Santa Monica Mountains sustained the Chumash and Tongva/Gabrielino cultures. Sycamore Canyon\, which cuts through Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa and Point Mugu State Park\, was part of a Chumash trade route. Satwiwa\, which means “the bluffs\,” was the name of a nearby Chumash village. \n \nWe’ll hike through serene hills\, with views of Boney Mountain. Along the way there is a seasonal water fall and some hand-sized fossils. We’ll take a snack break at the Danielson Monument. \nThe hike is about 8.5 miles with 2\,000 feet total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections to Trailhead \nPark on Potrero Rd. at the end of Wendy Dr. in Newbury Park

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. (See note below) \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=item_simple] \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. I will consider options at that time\, possibly continuing the hike without the side trip to MASH site. \nPost-Hike Lunch\nIslands Restaurant Agoura Hills\n29271 Agoura Road\nAgoura Hills\, CA 91301\nPhone: 818-879-8550\nOn the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rd \nDirections:\nPark in the dirt lot. SUMMARY:The Original E.T. Hike – 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nAn HDW original\, we’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations.\n\n\n \n\n\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8.3 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Wirebreak - Santa Ynez Canyon Loop - Lunch at Spruzzo's
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nI’m timing this hike with the opening of Spruzzo Restaurant in Pacific Palisades. Date may change accordingly. \nWe begin the hike by traveling south along Santa Ynez Creek\, climb a steep ridge to E. Topanga Fireroad\, skirt Trippet ranch and return via a descent down into Santa Ynez Canyon. Santa Ynez Canyon features chilly mountain pools\, several beautiful waterfalls\, and slim sandstone cliffs set in a cool oasis of lush oak and sycamore forests. \nLoop is 7.3 miles with total ascent of about 1700′. The No Fire-roads Rule will be in effect! \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections \nFrom PCH: Take Sunset Bl north 0.5 mile to Palisades Dr. Follow Palisades Dr north for 2.4 miles to Ver de la Montura. Turn left for one long block. Park near end of street and meet across the street from signed trailhead. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Hiking & Camping in Santa Barbara Back Country
DESCRIPTION:I have reserved a spot at the Los Prietos Campground in the Los Padres National Forest for 7/11 Sunday night and 7/12 Monday night. I am putting together a couple of hikes for Monday and Tuesday. \nMonday morning will be the main hike and will cover the following \nAliso Canyon – a pretty little hike through riparian and chaparral habitats. \nOso Canyon & Santa Cruz Trail to Nineteen Oaks Campground – after Aliso we will follow Oso Canyon through the steep sandstone cliffs of Oso Narrows. The trail parallels Oso Creek up the canyon to the camp located at the base of Little Pine Mountain. The camp sits on a shady knoll in an oak tree grove (with 19 oaks?) with picnic tables and beautiful views down Oso Canyon. This will be appx 8-10 miles. \nOn Tuesday\, road conditions permitting\, we’ll drive up the road 6 miles to the Red Rock day use parking lot ($10.00 without a pass) and do a 7-mile loop covering Red Rock\, Gibraltar Dam and Mercury Mine. \nCamp sites are $30/night (plus $10.00 for additional vehicle) and you should be able to reserve a spot for these days. I am in Site 002. \nReserve a spot here: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234001?tab=campsites \nI’ll post more info as the days progress\, but I recommend getting a reservation as soon as possible \nAdventure pass not required \nNote: Some of the trails were damaged during the Rey Fire of 2016 and we may have to do some improvising along the official routes.

SUMMARY:🌕 Buck Moon Hike on Mt. Basura - Friday Night Party 🥂
DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon in July is the Buck Moon\, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon\, Hay Moon\, and Wort Moon. \n“Mt Basura” is my name for the Calabasas/Lost Hills Landfill. Our destination is a small peak overlooking the landfill with views of Calabasas and Agoura beyond. \n🍽Bring drink and light snacks to share. \nOur usual hikes to Mt Basura are about 8-9 miles. I have created a shorter option of about 5.8 miles with about 1\,400′ total ascent. The trails are clear and wide — perfect for a moonlit hike. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights may not be needed since the area will be well lit by the moon). \nIf you require a white light then this hike is not for you. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amz.run/4bkH. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \n🍺🍹 Don’t forget to bring something cold to drink and snacks to share for the top of Mt Basura \nSunset 8:00 pmMoon rise 8:16 pm \nHike is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nPark near the north end of Las Virgenes Rd. Arrive early to secure your spot. Hike starts at 7pm

SUMMARY:Baron Ranch Trails on Gaviota Coast - Post-hike Coastal Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard of the Baron Ranch hiking trails? Most folks haven’t\, but it’s a splendid — and sometimes shady — trail a couple miles west of Refugio State Beach and it’s worth the trip. \nAnd if that’s not enough\, we’ll have a picnic at Refugio SB after the hike where Ann and I have reserved two campsites. \nThe hike is about a 6.9 mile lollipop with 1\,300′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nOur hike begins in the canyon that forms the Arroyo Quemado Creek watershed. The trail follows a network of ranch roads leading through a habitat restoration area and into the backcountry. \nThe first mile of the trail is relatively flat and follows the bottom of the canyon. Just beyond the one-mile mark the road transitions into the riparian zone and continues to parallel the creek\, it’s here that the trail starts to take on a more wilderness feel. \nAt 2.1 miles and 2.6 miles\, the trail splits to form a loop up into the mountains. The upper portion of the Loop Trail provides some exceptional vistas down the canyon and out towards the ocean with views of the island on a clear day. Views along the canyons open up to reveal the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. At the top of the loop\, the single-track section of the Loop Trail trail connects again to a ranch road and then returns to the beginning of the loop and the main trail. \n[Note. The trail is currently closed until 9/17 due to the recent restrictions placed on California’s National Forests in order to prevent fire activity.] \nDIRECTIONS \n– Take Hwy 101 North\, 2.4 miles past Refugio Road and exit\n– Turn right at the road crossing onto Arroyo Quemada Ln. (Watch for the yellow sign indicating “cross-traffic ahead”).\n– Immediately turn left onto Calle Real and proceed approximately 3/4 mile until the road reaches a street sign that says “End”.\n– Use the circle to turn around and park along Calle Real.

SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - Fossil Ridge - PacBell Tower
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nInstead of the usual destination – the graffiti covered Topanga Lookout – we will head over to the old PacBell towers. \nThis is a 9 mile hike with over 1500 ft elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nHighlights include the sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, Topanga Lookout and the Bragg home in the Bay Tree Woodland. (Paul C. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30?s and 40?s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire). \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!
