DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nI’m timing this hike with the opening of Spruzzo Restaurant in Pacific Palisades. Date may change accordingly. \nWe begin the hike by traveling south along Santa Ynez Creek\, climb a steep ridge to E. Topanga Fireroad\, skirt Trippet ranch and return via a descent down into Santa Ynez Canyon. Santa Ynez Canyon features chilly mountain pools\, several beautiful waterfalls\, and slim sandstone cliffs set in a cool oasis of lush oak and sycamore forests. \nLoop is 7.3 miles with total ascent of about 1700′. The No Fire-roads Rule will be in effect! \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections \nFrom PCH: Take Sunset Bl north 0.5 mile to Palisades Dr. Follow Palisades Dr north for 2.4 miles to Ver de la Montura. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. SUMMARY:Hiking & Camping in Santa Barbara Back Country
DESCRIPTION:I have reserved a spot at the Los Prietos Campground in the Los Padres National Forest for 7/11 Sunday night and 7/12 Monday night. I am putting together a couple of hikes for Monday and Tuesday. \nMonday morning will be the main hike and will cover the following \nAliso Canyon – a pretty little hike through riparian and chaparral habitats. \nOso Canyon & Santa Cruz Trail to Nineteen Oaks Campground – after Aliso we will follow Oso Canyon through the steep sandstone cliffs of Oso Narrows. The trail parallels Oso Creek up the canyon to the camp located at the base of Little Pine Mountain. The camp sits on a shady knoll in an oak tree grove (with 19 oaks?) with picnic tables and beautiful views down Oso Canyon. This will be appx 8-10 miles. \nOn Tuesday\, road conditions permitting\, we’ll drive up the road 6 miles to the Red Rock day use parking lot ($10.00 without a pass) and do a 7-mile loop covering Red Rock\, Gibraltar Dam and Mercury Mine. \nCamp sites are $30/night (plus $10.00 for additional vehicle) and you should be able to reserve a spot for these days. I am in Site 002. \nReserve a spot here: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234001?tab=campsites \nI’ll post more info as the days progress\, but I recommend getting a reservation as soon as possible \nAdventure pass not required \nNote: Some of the trails were damaged during the Rey Fire of 2016 and we may have to do some improvising along the official routes.

DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon in July is the Buck Moon\, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon\, Hay Moon\, and Wort Moon. \n“Mt Basura” is my name for the Calabasas/Lost Hills Landfill. Our destination is a small peak overlooking the landfill with views of Calabasas and Agoura beyond. \n🍽Bring drink and light snacks to share. \nOur usual hikes to Mt Basura are about 8-9 miles. I have created a shorter option of about 5.8 miles with about 1\,400′ total ascent. The trails are clear and wide — perfect for a moonlit hike. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights may not be needed since the area will be well lit by the moon). \nIf you require a white light then this hike is not for you. SUMMARY:Baron Ranch Trails on Gaviota Coast - Post-hike Coastal Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard of the Baron Ranch hiking trails? Most folks haven’t\, but it’s a splendid — and sometimes shady — trail a couple miles west of Refugio State Beach and it’s worth the trip. \nAnd if that’s not enough\, we’ll have a picnic at Refugio SB after the hike where Ann and I have reserved two campsites. \nThe hike is about a 6.9 mile lollipop with 1\,300′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nOur hike begins in the canyon that forms the Arroyo Quemado Creek watershed. The trail follows a network of ranch roads leading through a habitat restoration area and into the backcountry. \nThe first mile of the trail is relatively flat and follows the bottom of the canyon. Just beyond the one-mile mark the road transitions into the riparian zone and continues to parallel the creek\, it’s here that the trail starts to take on a more wilderness feel. \nAt 2.1 miles and 2.6 miles\, the trail splits to form a loop up into the mountains. The upper portion of the Loop Trail provides some exceptional vistas down the canyon and out towards the ocean with views of the island on a clear day. Views along the canyons open up to reveal the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. At the top of the loop\, the single-track section of the Loop Trail trail connects again to a ranch road and then returns to the beginning of the loop and the main trail. \n[Note. The trail is currently closed until 9/17 due to the recent restrictions placed on California’s National Forests in order to prevent fire activity.] \nDIRECTIONS \n– Take Hwy 101 North\, 2.4 miles past Refugio Road and exit\n– Turn right at the road crossing onto Arroyo Quemada Ln. (Watch for the yellow sign indicating “cross-traffic ahead”).\n– Immediately turn left onto Calle Real and proceed approximately 3/4 mile until the road reaches a street sign that says “End”.\n– Use the circle to turn around and park along Calle Real.

SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - Fossil Ridge - PacBell Tower
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nInstead of the usual destination – the graffiti covered Topanga Lookout – we will head over to the old PacBell towers. \nThis is a 9 mile hike with over 1500 ft elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. We’ll return to our cars via the Ray Miller Trail – the western terminus of the Backbone Trail \nHere us the view from the Ray Miller Trail \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 12 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT due to mileage and terrain. SUMMARY:Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n \nHike will be about 3 miles with 550 ft total ascent. Hike is rated as EASY. SUMMARY:Historic Hike to the Calabasas Stairs
DESCRIPTION:A loop hike filled with local history and a set of stairs. What more can you ask for? Our hike will begin at the west end of Calabasas Rd where “The Trail Between Two Valleys” was dedicated in 2005 \nThis is the path the Juan Bautista De Anza party took in 1776 connecting the San Fernando Valley and Las Virgenes Valley while establishing missions along the way from Mexico to San Francisco. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nOne of the attractions along this trail is a more than 100-year old section of US 101\, known at the time as Ventura Rd aka El Camino Real. Here are a couple of sections from when the road was widened in 1924. I shot the first on 8/2006. Fellow member Bruce cleaned up the area about 8 years ago and revealed the contractor’s name \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636135955940-ecfa2dbe-08b4-3″ include=”99612\,99611″] \nWe’ll then connect to the Anza Loop Trail and into Calabash Canyon where we’ll come across some interesting artifacts. This pair of photos is from 8/2006 when I first explored the area. The trail was once an active jeep road. \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636134706146-b1d765a0-a2a7-9″ include=”99617\,99616″] \nAfter some switchbacks\, grassy hillsides and wooded canyons we’ll make a side trip to the Calabasas Stairs\, a straight up-and-down shot rising a total of 375 steps. SUMMARY:VIP Hike - Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting

Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (class 0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abandoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. SUMMARY:🌻The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:A pre-Thanksgiving workout\, this one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails\, and they have gotten a lot more use since then. \nBlast from the past: Here are photos from the first group hike in December 2009: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=780881. Did you notice the ice on the trail? \nWith combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir (see if you can spot them in the photos below). We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. The hike is more strenuous than it sounds. \n\n\n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park \n—————————————————————————————————- \nTrail statistics are approximate.
