SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - The Shadiest Section of The Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail…this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nThe hike is OaB and can be adjusted according to weather conditions. Lots of shade along this one (plus some clouds are predicted in Topanga as of this writing)\, but bring plenty of water; I recommend 2 quarts. \nHISTORY\nI’ll show you a bay tree woodland in Hondo Canyon that was the home of Paul C. Bragg. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30s and 40s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire. There are still some artifacts. \nHike will be 6-8 miles depending on weather/group and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!

SUMMARY:💦Sleeper Canyon to the Rock Pool - Swimming OK
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Pool is one of the most popular landmarks in Malibu Creek State Park. It has been the site of many movies and TV shows including Planet of the Apes\, Swiss Family Robinson series\, Tarzan movies and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. \n🧺 🤽Bring a sack lunch — we’ll have an extended break by the Pool. In addition to the Rock Pool we’ll also have an opportunity to cool our toes at a Malibu Creek crossing. \nSOME HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY \nThe Mott Adobe – a vacation home built around 1925 by Los Angeles lawyer and member of Crags Country Club Johnny Mott on Mott Road just off Crags Road. Herbert Hoover once slept there \nThe structure is a Spanish Colonial Revival style adobe block structure with a two-door garage\, featuring local bricks\, wooden doors and beams\, and wrought iron fixtures. Only portions of the building are still standing. \nThe Visitor Center – The center was built in the Colonial Revival architectural style in the 1920s by Willis P. Hunt as a vacation home. Within you will find maps\, books\, souvenirs\, even refreshments for sale and nature exhibits. \nCampgrounds – We will also be traveling by a year-round campground that boasts 63 sites. \n👉This leisurely 7-mile hike with appx 1\,000 ft total ascent is rated MEDIUM. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to Trailhead \nAs of this writing we will park in the Tapia Park day use area. Fee is $12/car. There may be free parking (at your own risk) across the street on the southeast corner of Piuma and Malibu Canyon Rd . If you park in free spot use the the Backbone Trail where it crosses under Malibu Canyon and into Tapia Park – or just cross the road. \nNote: I may change meetup venue….check back often for final selection. Normally I would park at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon but we may not be able to cross the creek into Sleeper Canyon\, so we go around the Tapia way. I’ll try to find some time to scout it out before hike.

SUMMARY:Sullivan - Mandeville Loop
DESCRIPTION:The shady hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville Canyon side of the ridge dividing the two canyons creating a loop. \nThe hike will include a short but steep ascent and an equally steep descent on Mandeville Ridge — trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any bushwhacking. \nHike is 7 miles and rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Green Peak - a Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE REPLACES THE SULLIVAN CANYON HIKE \nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fireroad and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over and up to Green Peak \nHike is 4.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections: \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, turn north on Palisades Drive and continue for 2.9 mi until you get to Palisades Ct. Turn left here then left again on Michael Ln. Trailhead is 0.2 mi on right — across the street form given address. Park on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop - Remake
DESCRIPTION:⌚EARLY START TIME🕰️ \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \n👉 Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See my hike rating guide. \nThere will be some shade during last mile. \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Easy Hike: Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop

Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \nOn the way back we’ll stop at a picnic bench overlooking Santa Maria Canyon for our break. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail and head back to the cars \nHIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.

SUMMARY:🌠🍷Fireballs over Malibu - Perseid Party🎉🌠
DESCRIPTION:No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. Amazon has some inexpensive ones that have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nYou don’t need to get out of the city to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. Anywhere is fine as long as there are no lights in your line of sight. For us city-folk\, the Santa Monica Mountains provides some of the best viewing spots for watching the Perseid Meteor Shower. \nI have selected Saddle Peak as our viewing spot. At over 2\,800 feet\, Saddle Peak is the highest peak in the eastern/central Santa Monica Mountains \nWe’ll get there by way of Backbone Trail near where Stunt Road\, Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet. \n🍻🧺Bring food/snacks and booze to share. Bring your own cups\, plates\, etc \nThis year’s Perseid meteor shower began July 17 and ends August 24 with a peak during the predawn hours of Sunday\, August 13. We will be watching the show Thursday night and avoid the Friday and Saturday night crowds with their headlights and flashlights. \n📈There will be an EASY 1 mile hike — with a gentle 450 ft ascent — to our viewing location\, then 1 mile back they way we came. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe will arrive early to catch the sunset over Malibu and the Pacific. There will be panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the West\, and other ridges and peaks of the Santa Monica Mountains to the East and West. \n🚨No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. These have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nDIRECTIONS: \nHead toward the top of Stunt Road where it comes together with Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Road. Park in a turnout about 0.1 mile downhill from the top of Stunt. \nUse this link for precise navigation: https://goo.gl/maps/DrDP7CYwCghi8UHx6 \nSee https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/33783957/514754371/ for aerial vew

SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons - Western Plateau - Adventist Hill
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do one of my classic loops and add Adventist Hill to the mix. Trekking poles and good lug soles recommended \nHike is about 7 miles with 1500′ gain. It is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating guide. \nHere is a video from a previous hike in Hill Canyon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC9pYzkaCF0 \nHistory of Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nDirections to trailhead \nUse Google Map and drive to address. Park in dirt lot at trailhead or on street near corner with Rancho Conejo Blvd \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up”

SUMMARY:Spahn Ranch - Stagecoach Rd - Corriganville - Rock House - El Camino Nuevo Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will be steeped in local history and lore. We’ll begin our trek at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and venture west through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville. After a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using the wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. We’ll visit the Rock House and have our snack break. \nWe’ll continue the loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. And then its back to The Old Stagecoach Rd \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch \nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson#Manson_Family) to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/8/2/f/600_456802575.jpeg \nA wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nThe Rock House \nThe rock house is a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the road. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. Its a perfect spot for our snack break! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/3/e/600_427724862.jpeg \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/0/2/e/600_427725102.jpeg \nCorriganville \nWe’ve been here many times. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. In 1979 another fire destroyed virtually all of the remaining structures. \nIn 1988 The land was acquired by the City of Simi Valley for use as a regional park \nHere is a video of the “Jungle Jim Rock” and “Robin Hood Lake” \nhttp://youtu.be/G-MeZdkkeFo \nHere is a video showing Fort Apache location. \nhttp://youtu.be/YK7ajTUHHrY \nThe Old Stagecoach Road \nAnother HWD regular\, The Old Stagecoach Road was built In 1859. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be starting and ending our loop hike at the top of the Devils Slide segment and hiking along the Twilight Canyon section \nDescending into Twilight Canyon \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/4/c/8/highres_19966280.jpeg \nEl Camino Nuevo \nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. We’ll be hiking along this old grade which was replaced by our familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917. \nThe Santa Susana Wildlife Corridor \nThis wildlife corridor under the 118 helps provide a vital linkage between the Santa Susana Mountains and the Santa Monica Mountains. It also means us animals don’t have to dodge cars on the 118 when we go from Corriganville to the Hummingbird Trail \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/3/c/600_427741852.jpeg \nHike will be about 8 miles with about 1500′ total ascent and rated difficult. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nBring plenty of water and snacks \nDirections \nDepending on size of group I may change the meeting spot. For now use the Google Map shown here.

SUMMARY:Easy Hike: Paramount Ranch Raceway
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original!\nMany of you know Paramount Ranch for its Western Town filming set (destroyed by the Woolsey fire). But did you know that during the 1950s it was home to a world-class race track? The broken sections of asphalt that twist through the eucalyptus trees and around the old Western Town was in fact an official racecourse with international prestige! \nClick here for a cool video \nTrack History \nThe 2-mile Paramount Ranch Raceway opened for its first event over the weekend of August 18th and 19th 1956. Among the notable names competing were Dan Gurney\, Lance Reventlow\, Ritchie Ginther and Bob Bondurant\, who made up a more than 350-strong entry list of drivers across a variety of categories. \nIt was a narrow and twisting course with ups and downs. Due to many accidents and tragedies the track closed 7 races and 18 months later. After closure it was used for the next several years by Paramount for filming movies. \nMovie History \nThe track was used for filming many movies\, including 1957’s “Devil’s Hairpin”\, “Roadracers” (1959) and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini” (1965). Perhaps the most famous depiction of the circuit on the big screen came during 1965’s ‘Spin Out‘\, notable for starring Elvis Presley. Cameos also followed with 1966’s ‘Munster Go Home‘\, ‘The Love Bug‘ (1968) and its sequel\, ‘Herbie Rides Again’\, in 1974. \nHike will be 3-4 miles with 200′-400′ total ascent and rated EASY. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \n–> Depending on unanimous decision of group I can extend this hike as far and as high as your legs will take you. \nDIRECTIONS \n2903 Cornell Road\, Agoura Hills\, CA\, 91301 \nGPS Coordinates: N 34.1181 W -118.7525 \nFrom the Ventura Freeway (US 101) in Agoura take the Kanan Road offramp and turn south. Follow Kanan\, turn left on Cornell Way\, bear right onto Cornell Road for about 3 blocks. Turn right at the main gate to Paramount Ranch. \nFrom PCH turn north onto Kanan for 6 miles then turn right onto Mulholland. After 5.5 miles turn left onto Cornell Rd. Turn left into Paramount Ranch \nWHEN YOU ENTER PARAMOUNT RANCH GO TO THE END OF THE ENTRANCE ROAD (YOU’LL SEE IT AS YOU TURN IN) AND TURN LEFT (you’ll be driving on racetrack straightaway) . PARK NEAR THE END. \nIMPORTANT: \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Browns Canyon - Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our loop hike begins in the Twin Lakes neighborhood and meanders north through along Browns Canyon Creek. We’ll eventually head west along a network of trails across Deerlake Highlands and descend Echo Canyon connecting our loop with Devil Canyon. Devil Canyon\, with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment\, makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \nThere will be a few creek crossings but I suspect they will be low enough now to keep us dry. \nHike will be about 6.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nIt appears our meetup location is now on Google Maps. However\, Meetup.com hasn’t updated yet. Click here for Location on Google Maps \nIf you are using iPhone or car GPS\, you may need the following directions\, or type in the coordinates 34.279504\, -118.600623 \nThese are the directions that we used in the past: \nAddress on meetup page is approximate. Go to map pin or follow these instructions \n🚗From Canoga Ave – go north on Canoga Ave past the 118. Bear right and enter the Deerlake Ranch development; head uphill and make a left on Poema Pl. Go past the 21600 address\, cross the bridge (that will be the 2nd bridge you cross)\, then turn right into the construction site for Skyline Homes. Park in cul de sac to the right \n🚙From Topanga Cyn Blvd – go north on Topanga past the 118. Turn right on Poema Pl\, but don’t go all the way to 21600. Before the bridge turn left into Skyline Homes construction site. Park in cul de sac on right. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. SUMMARY:Solstice Canyon - Sostomo - Deer Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:Solstice Canyon is the quintessential coastal canyon. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past. During our trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will extend the classic Solstice Canyon hike by taking the Sostomo Trail and Deer Valley Loop Trail. The trail meanders through chaparral and coastal sage scrub to the western ridge of Solstice Canyon. After a couple of stream crossings we will encounter breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for the ruins of several cabins burned in past wildfires. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1900 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM+ DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nBring at least 2 quarts water\, sunscreen\, hat\, snacks. Sturdy tennis shoes OK. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Turn left and proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd. \nRULES \n\nCarpooling is desirable\nAll hikers must stay on established trails\nNo use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\nPractice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints\n\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Falls Creek Lollipop & HWD Ranch West
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be modifying a difficult hike and making it a medium one this time. We begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. \nAlmost 20 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the “trails” we’ll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old “secret trails” are now established LA County trails; hikers\, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1\,600 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom the Santa Susana Pass Rd — between Rocky Peak Rd and Topanga Canyon Blvd — turn north on Iverson Rd. Proceed under the 118 Fwy and park on street outside of gates. We meet just outside the gates. \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Oak Canyon to China Flat - A Double Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike was requested by the original Mark E🙋🏻‍♂️. \nPerched 2\,000 feet above sea level in the hills between Simi Valley\, Oak Park and Thousand Oaks\, China Flat is an idyllic 1\,100-acre oak meadow that features rocky sandstone outcroppings and native oak woodlands.\nAlong our route we will pass by an old cistern\, a small silo and an abandoned farm vehicle that are vestiges of the area’s ranching history. There is also a vernal pond. \nWe’ll get there via the Rocky Ridge Open Space – a steep climb on the east side of Oak Canyon Community Park. After a loop around China Flat we will regturn via the China Flat Trail then down along Medea Creek that flows through the park into a duck pond by our cars. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM+ – see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nWe’ll be meeting by the duck pond at Oak Canyon Community Park in the first lot immediately to the left after entrance \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop - Extended
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Another HWD Original! \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \nHike into History\nA Visit to the Rancho El Escorpion Lime Kiln \nBell Canyon is the location of the Rancho El Escorpion lime kiln site. The site sits on  a seam of limestone running from Bell Canyon to Dayton Canyon and the Woolsey Canyon area (the sites of 2 more kilns). The kiln was constructed over a time period starting between the late 18th  and early 19th  centuries by a succession of native Chumash people and others of mixed Chumash and Mexican heritage. \nThe kiln was used to process quicklime (used on the San Fernando Mission buildings) throughout the nineteenth century. Over the years the kiln has become almost entirely covered with dirt\, its mouth filled in\, and is difficult to see (without me showing it to you). \n\n \n \n \n \n 2018\n \n \n \n \n \n 1987\n \n \n\n  \nViewing the Bell Canyon Limestone Quarry \nIn 1939 to 1941\, the limestone hilltop at the mouth of Bell Canyon was used to face the Sepulveda Dam Basin. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”] Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See my hike rating guide[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
