SUMMARY:Upper Las Virgenes - Mt. Basura - Cheeseboro Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will consist of traveling along the Dean’s Cut trail connecting the underbelly of Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons. The star of this hike is Mt Basura\, known for its year-round snow-less skiing. We’ll take or break here. \nNote: this hike was a VIP hike. Now my overgrown secret trail is wide open and named “Dean’s Cut.” \nCheeseboro Canyon is located in the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It is from these hills that water in the canyons flow to the Pacific. The Chumash Indians lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons were original Chumash trails before they were expanded by cattle ranchers. In this large expanse of habitat\, deer\, bobcats\, coyotes and rabbits roam. \nToday\, a great diversity of plants and animals live in the canyons. Wide-spread oaks and outcrops of sedimentary rock provide excellent nesting sites for owls\, hawks and other raptors. The abundance of raptors indicates a large prey population\, especially small mammals and reptiles. In more rugged areas where cattle didn’t graze\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and riparian woodlands. \nA couple of unique facts regarding these canyons: \n• Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska. \n• The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Dayton Canyon - Woolsey Canyon Loopy Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike has just about everything: Caves\, creeks\, waterfalls\, velvety meadows\, flowers\, sandstone formations and artifacts. We start at Dayton Canyon Park then loop around the Woolsey Canyon Open Space \nDayton Canyon Park is 276 acres recently given to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy by the Sterling Homes development at the bottom of the canyon. \nHike is 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections \nHead toward the west end of Roscoe Blvd and across Valley Circle Blvd. Park on Quiet Hills Ct. SUMMARY:The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:This one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails. With the combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir. We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Park on street. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:O’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one used last year to get to the top. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. After that its all downhill on the Phantom Trail into Liberty Canyon. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views. From here we’ll hook up with dirt Mulholland and head east to Garapito Canyon \nWe’ll then descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \nAfter rising out of Garapito Canyon Eagle Rock will come into view. The most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, it will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nAfter that we’ll take the Cheney Ridge trail and across Summerhill Ranchback to Santa Maria Canyon to complete the loop. \n\n\nHIKE IS ABOUT 12 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. DESCRIPTION:This loop will include a shortcut to the Coquina Mine in Las Llajas Canyon. It was formerly a VIP hike\, however the shortcut has been getting a lot of use in recent years and I have opened the hike to entire group. \nWe’ll start behind a dam and along some lesser known trails above Chivo Canyon. We return via the canyon trail. Highlights along the way: \n\nPower shovel and other artifacts from a 1929-1935 limestone strip mining operation\nFossils\nTar pits\nRanching remnants\n\nIn Part 2 we will use the classic approach and extend the hike along some private trails and a creek making a 9 mile loop. \nHike is about 7 miles with appx 1\,600′ total ascent is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. SUMMARY:Hump Day Hike: Musch Loop to Eagle Rock
DESCRIPTION:Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nWe begin hiking at Trippet Ranch\, walking north on a paved driveway about 100 yards to where the Musch Trail slants to the right across a grassy hillside. \n \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nOn that trail we’ll plunge into the shade of oak and bay laurel trees. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. We begin to see Eagle Rock looming over ravines plunging south toward the sea. The rock\, a sandstone outcrop pitted with small caves\, is a good example of the 15-million-year-old Topanga Canyon Formation that crops out in various parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. \n \nWe’ll return to Trippet Ranch via the rolling East Topanga Fire Road. Hike is about 5 miles. \nBring a snacks and drink to share and we’ll usher in the New Year \n[vc_message style=”square” message_box_color=”warning” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-area-chart”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY+. For a bit of fort history and photos visit the HWD Facebook page \n💦There will be a couple of creek crossings on this hike. We might get our feet wet on one of them. \nHike is appx 7 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD hike ratings guide \n🚻There is potable water and bathrooms along the way. \nDirections: \nTake either Lynn Rd or the 23 to Avenida de los Arboles. Turn west and drive (0.6 miles from Lynn Rd) to the Wildflower Playfield. Turn right on Canna St then left into parking lot\, or park on street.

DESCRIPTION:A special hike to Rocky Peak that only HWD can deliver. \nRocky Peak\, located in Rocky Peak Park\, is the fourth-highest point in the Santa Susana Mountains\, and overlooks the San Fernando Valley and Chatsworth\, the Simi Hills\, and the Simi Valley in Southern California. The peak\, which is 2\,715 feet in elevation\, sits on the Los Angeles County–Ventura County line. \n🦗We will be hiking along some old ranch roads that may be a little grassy and overgrown. \nHike will be a loopy 9 miles with 2500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide \nWe’ll stop at the Western HWD Ranch along the way \nDirections\nGo to the north end of Topanga Canyon and turn left on Poema Place. Park at curb. Meet by the driveway to Bella Vista Townhomes \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - The Shadiest Section of The Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail…this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nThe hike is OaB and can be adjusted according to weather conditions. Lots of shade along this one (plus some clouds are predicted in Topanga as of this writing)\, but bring plenty of water; I recommend 2 quarts. \nHISTORY\nI’ll show you a bay tree woodland in Hondo Canyon that was the home of Paul C. Bragg. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30s and 40s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire. There are still some artifacts. \nHike will be 6-8 miles depending on weather/group and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. SUMMARY:💦Sleeper Canyon to the Rock Pool - Swimming OK
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Pool is one of the most popular landmarks in Malibu Creek State Park. It has been the site of many movies and TV shows including Planet of the Apes\, Swiss Family Robinson series\, Tarzan movies and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. \n🧺 🤽Bring a sack lunch — we’ll have an extended break by the Pool. In addition to the Rock Pool we’ll also have an opportunity to cool our toes at a Malibu Creek crossing. \nSOME HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY \nThe Mott Adobe – a vacation home built around 1925 by Los Angeles lawyer and member of Crags Country Club Johnny Mott on Mott Road just off Crags Road. Herbert Hoover once slept there \nThe structure is a Spanish Colonial Revival style adobe block structure with a two-door garage\, featuring local bricks\, wooden doors and beams\, and wrought iron fixtures. Only portions of the building are still standing. \nThe Visitor Center – The center was built in the Colonial Revival architectural style in the 1920s by Willis P. Hunt as a vacation home. Within you will find maps\, books\, souvenirs\, even refreshments for sale and nature exhibits. \nCampgrounds – We will also be traveling by a year-round campground that boasts 63 sites. \n👉This leisurely 7-mile hike with appx 1\,000 ft total ascent is rated MEDIUM. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to Trailhead \nAs of this writing we will park in the Tapia Park day use area. Fee is $12/car. There may be free parking (at your own risk) across the street on the southeast corner of Piuma and Malibu Canyon Rd . If you park in free spot use the the Backbone Trail where it crosses under Malibu Canyon and into Tapia Park – or just cross the road. \nNote: I may change meetup venue….check back often for final selection. Normally I would park at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon but we may not be able to cross the creek into Sleeper Canyon\, so we go around the Tapia way. I’ll try to find some time to scout it out before hike.

SUMMARY:Sullivan - Mandeville Loop
DESCRIPTION:The shady hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville Canyon side of the ridge dividing the two canyons creating a loop. \nThe hike will include a short but steep ascent and an equally steep descent on Mandeville Ridge — trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any bushwhacking. \nHike is 7 miles and rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Green Peak - a Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE REPLACES THE SULLIVAN CANYON HIKE \nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fireroad and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over and up to Green Peak \nHike is 4.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. DESCRIPTION:Another shorter hike for a hot day (See Saturday’s hike also) We’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \nOn the way back we’ll stop at a picnic bench overlooking Santa Maria Canyon for our break. There are some interesting sandstone formations and caves to explore – or you can just sit and relax \nThere will be some shade along the way. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail and head back to the cars \nHIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.

For us city-folk\, the Santa Monica Mountains provides some of the best viewing spots for watching the Perseid Meteor Shower. \nI have selected Saddle Peak as our viewing spot. At over 2\,800 feet\, Saddle Peak is the highest peak in the eastern/central Santa Monica Mountains \nWe’ll get there by way of Backbone Trail near where Stunt Road\, Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet. \n🍻🧺Bring food/snacks and booze to share. Bring your own cups\, plates\, etc \nThis year’s Perseid meteor shower began July 17 and ends August 24 with a peak during the predawn hours of Sunday\, August 13.
