SUMMARY:A Trail of Two Ranchos
DESCRIPTION:On this one Chuck Dickens will be our invisible leader. We’ll do a loop around two Ranchos: Rancho Sierra Vista and Rancho Potrero. \nWe’ll begin and end on the Satwiwa Loop Trail. Rancho Potrero abuts the west end of the loop and includes grasslands\, coastal sage scrub with the Conejo rock plant association\, and riparian habitats. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Towsley Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This outing follows a counterclockwise lollipop loop that blends wide canyon roads\, singletrack\, and ridgeline views for a well-rounded\, moderate hike. \nWe’ll start from the Rivendale Ranch trailhead and head up Towsley Canyon Road\, an easy\, gradual warm-up through oak-studded canyon bottoms. From there\, we’ll turn onto the Towsley View Loop Trail\, climbing steadily through shaded sections\, a narrow sandstone gorge\, and classic chaparral slopes. Going counterclockwise keeps the ascent manageable and rewards us with expanding views of the Santa Clarita Valley as we gain elevation. The high point along the ridge sits around 2\,400 feet\, offering wide-open vistas and a good place to pause and take it in. \nFrom the ridge\, we’ll descend into Wiley Canyon\, then complete the loop using the Canyon View Loop Trail\, which rolls gently back toward the trailhead without retracing our steps. The full route is about 5.4 miles with roughly 1\,100–1\,400 feet of elevation gain\, \nEcologically\, this hike is a snapshot of Southern California chaparral. Along the way you’ll see coast live oaks\, sycamores\, sage\, buckwheat\, chamise\, manzanita\, and scrub oak. In winter and spring\, wildflowers like mustard\, lupine\, and poppies often add color to the hillsides. Wildlife commonly spotted here includes lizards\, ground squirrels\, rabbits\, mule deer\, and a wide variety of birds such as red-tailed hawks\, vultures\, quail\, and scrub jays. Rattlesnakes do live in the area\, so we’ll stay alert\, especially in warmer weather. \nOverall\, this is a scenic\, rewarding hike that feels wild without being remote—perfect for experiencing Towsley Canyon at its best. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:🚶‍♂️‍➡️Easy Hike: The New Paramount Ranch (from Reagan Ranch)
DESCRIPTION:We were here last May and found a new old west is rising! Let’s check out the continiuing rebuilding progress of the famous Old Western Town at Paramount Ranch with this easy hike. \n📽️As many of you know\, until the Woolsey fire\, this was the filming site of hundreds of movies and TV shows since 1927. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the original Western Town buildings. Only two structures survived: a white chapel built for “Westworld” and a train depot built for “Dr. Quinn\, Medicine Woman.” \n🏎️The ranch site also was also the home of a world class race track in the late 50s. \nThe National Park Service is building a new Paramount Ranch set to house four buildings on the footprint of the historic structures\, and all will be built with an eye toward wildfire safety. Plans for the new structures include a prop shed\, barn\, restrooms and a large pavilion\, which all could be used for events and as “the backbone for future filming.” The chapel and depot will remain in place. \nLet’s check out the progress! \n👉Hike will be about 4 miles with 500′ of total ascent and rated EASY+. Depending on group\, we can easily add more elevation. \nGetting There\nIn order to respect the NPS parking limits we will be parking and meeting at the old Reagan Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park and hiking into Paramount Ranch. SUMMARY:💦We Go Chasing Waterfalls
DESCRIPTION:Capturing all the beauty of Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks — dramatic views\, peaceful canyons\, and two waterfalls — this loop is a group favorite. It’s about five miles long and covers the park’s most scenic highlights\, including Lizard Rock\, Skunk Hollow\, the quiet Eagle Point Trail\, and finally Paradise Falls\, before returning by way of the tranquil Indian Creek Trail. \nWe’ll start down the street from the main Wildwood trailhead. Instead of heading out on the busy Mesa Trail\, we’ll hook up with the Stagecoach Bluff Trail. This single-track path runs parallel to the canyon edge and immediately feels more rugged and natural. We’ll meander through sage scrub and chaparral\, catching glimpses into Wildwood Canyon below. Hawks often circle overhead\, and in spring\, wildflowers brighten the slopes. The trail gently climbs westward until it meets Lizard Rock Trail\, where we turn for the final ascent to the ridge. \nThe climb to Lizard Rock is short but scenic\, winding through sandstone outcrops that frame sweeping views of Thousand Oaks\, Mountclef Ridge\, and the Santa Monica Mountains. At the top\, Lizard Rock — a large sandstone formation resembling its namesake — offers one of the best panoramas in the park. It’s a perfect place for us to rest\, take in the view\, and appreciate how close this wild landscape sits to the city below. \nFrom Lizard Rock\, we continue down the trail as it descends toward Skunk Hollow\, a quiet\, grassy meadow nestled in the canyon. Despite its name\, Skunk Hollow is lovely and peaceful — often dotted with wildflowers and shaded by oaks. From here we hop onto the Eagle Point Trail\, one of Wildwood’s lesser-traveled paths. This stretch feels remote\, winding along the park’s northern slopes with long\, open views across Wildwood Mesa. We climb gently\, then begin a steady descent into Wildwood Canyon. \nAt the end of Eagle Point Trail\, we connect to the main Paradise Falls Trail\, which leads to the park’s most famous landmark. The 40-foot waterfall tumbles year-round into a shaded pool\, making it an irresistible stop for another snack or photo break. \nOn our return to the cars we follow the Indian Creek Trail\, a quieter alternative to the main canyon route. This trail traces the creek upstream through oak woodlands. Along the way\, we’ll pass Little Falls\, a smaller\, charming cascade tucked into the canyon wall. From there\, the trail climbs gradually out of the canyon and rejoins the mesa above\, where an easy stroll across the ball fields brings us back to our starting point. \nThis loop showcases the best of Wildwood — sweeping vistas\, hidden hollows\, and the soothing sound of waterfalls — all in a moderate five-mile hike with about 600 feet of elevation gain.

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Another Palisades favorite. Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. And what better way to restart our Pali hiking but with an HWD Original! \nPerched high above the Palisades and Malibu\, the vista from the Parker Mesa Overlook is stunning. You can see all of the LA basin laid out before you\, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the crescent shaped coastline of Santa Monica to the east. \nThis isn’t your usual Parker Mesa Hike! Our ridge route starts near the Los Liones Canyon trailhead and makes a bee-line up a ridge to the Overlook with a 1400 ft gain in a mere 1.5 miles. Some parts are steep and loose. You’ve been warned! \nAt the top\, on the Parker Mesa Overlook\, there are a couple of benches where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Los Angeles coastline and a snack. We’ll take an extended break here to allow everyone to catch up \nWe will return via the hilly side trails of E Topanga Fireroad\, and the beautiful Los Liones Canyon \nThe Los Liones Trail weaves through a lush canyon just a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Slivers of big blue sea can be seen from much of the ivy and chaparral-lined canyon \nThe No Fireroad rule will be in effect! \nThis strenuous hike is rated DIFFICULT. Its a relatively short 5-mile loop\, but packs a wallop with about 2100 feet of total ascent. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections \nFrom Santa Monica or Malibu: Take the Pacific Coast Highway and turn on Sunset Boulevard. Go 0.3 miles on Sunset\, take a left on Los Liones and drive half a mile to the end of the street. Park on the right side of the street in the lot across from the church. \nThere is plenty of free street parking\, as well as two lots near picnic areas and restrooms. Arrive early; it can get buse. The hike starts at 9am\, not the parking.

Some of the gangly sycamores soar to heights of over 80 feet. After a pleasant 3 miles we’ll turn up the Woods Canyon Vista Trail (a segment of the Backbone Trail)\, our only major ascent during the hike. We’ll climb steadily for the next two miles\, making long\, looping switchbacks. As we climb higher\, we’ll get a nice view not only of Big Sycamore Canyon and Boney Mountain. When we reach the Overlook Fire Road we’ll take a break and enjoy views of La Jolla Valley. We’ll head south on the Overlook Fire Road\, which follows the ridge that divides Big Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. Pay for day use\, or check out a Park Pass at local librry. Parking was $12 last time I was there. Credit cards OK (but bring exact change just in case). We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. We’ll get there the classic Musch Loop in a counter-clockwise direction \nHike is rated EASY+. See my website for a detailed description. \n🧺Bring a sack lunch for break on the rock. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the ranger in the park ($12?). Free pass is available at your local library. \nIf you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions. We’ll meet by the main kiosk near the bathrooms.

DESCRIPTION:A new old west is rising! Let’s check out the rebuilding progress of the famous Old Western Town at Paramount Ranch with this easy hike. \n📽️As many of you know\, until the Woolsey fire\, this was the filming site of hundreds of movies and TV shows since 1927. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the original Western Town buildings. Only two structures survived: a white chapel built for “Westworld” and a train depot built for “Dr. Quinn\, Medicine Woman.” \n🏎️The ranch site also was also the home of a world class race track in the late 50s. \nThe National Park Service is building a new Paramount Ranch set to house four buildings on the footprint of the historic structures\, and all will be built with an eye toward wildfire safety. Plans for the new structures include a prop shed\, barn\, restrooms and a large pavilion\, which all could be used for events and as “the backbone for future filming.” The chapel and depot will remain in place. \nLet’s check out the progress! \n👉Hike will be about 4 miles with 400′ of total ascent and rated EASY. SUMMARY:Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 6.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. Point your GPS to 1912 Seminole Rd and park on street — off the asphalt — close to the corner.

The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliot who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nHike is appx 9 miles with appx 1500 ft total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon - Century Lake Loop
DESCRIPTION:We begin our journey hiking south into Liberty Canyon — one of three natural preserves in Malibu Creek State Park. The canyon has a rare stand of California Valley Oak. Soon we will cross Liberty Creek turn west onto and up the Phantom Trail. After a couple miles the trail puts us down onto Mulholland Hwy. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water. For our return\, we will take Cragg’s Rd to Grasslands Trail back to Mulholland and then north on Liberty Canyon to close the loop. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM+. SUMMARY:Moores Canyon - Upper Las Virgenes - Kenneth Fire Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Part of this loop hike will be through the Kenneth Fire burn area. \nToday we’ll be trapsing around the northern section of the Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve in the Simi Hills. At the western edge of the San Fernando Valley\, it is part of a critical ecological linkage and wildlife corridor between the Santa Monica Mountains and the ranges to the north. Diverse habitats and endangered species such as the California red-legged frog\, the San Fernando Valley spineflower\, and the Southwestern willow flycatcher are permanently protected here. \nOur hike begins at the mouth of Moores Canyon (aka El Escorpion Park)\, the location of historic ranches\, a cave used by the Chumash and Kas’elew (Castle Peak). For most people\, At the western end of Moores Canyon we’ll use a little-know trail that will get us into ULV Open Space. \nNote: There are a couple sections that I have not been on since before the Woolsey Fire\, and back then they were not well maintained. So buckle up\, buttercup. \nHike will be about 6 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. Hike is rated MEDIUM+ due to possible bushwhacking. DESCRIPTION:I’ll be working in the Malibu Creek State Park Visitor Center on this Sunday. We are open from Noon to 4pm. Stop by and say hello — and for a private tour. \nAbout the VC\nThe MCSP Visitor Center (VC) is a historic building and is over 100 years old. Malibu Creek Docents operate the VC. Here you will see a museum representative of the Park’s natural and human history: animals and tracks\, birds\, rocks and fossils\, pictures of flowers\, a model Chumash village display and artifacts\, and movie history. There is a Children’s Nature Room with activities for children of all ages. Maps\, books\, drinks\, apparel and souvenirs are for sale. \nDirections\nA one mile walk from the lower parking lot will take you to the VC. It is not possible to drive directly to the VC. DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original! \nThe world-famous HWD Ranch is located within the stunning Hidden Creeks parkland near the confluence of Browns Creek and Mormon Creek. The parkland provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area and a couple of wild horses. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! So expect a lot of stops along the way. \nHIKE IS 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SUMMARY:🏈 10th Annual Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Amazon Top 10 for Cheap Hikers \nI almost forgot 🤪 \nOur 10th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. You may even have time to get to New Orleans. ✈️ \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \n🗻Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n👉Hike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain and rated MEDIUM. Don’t drink the water 😆 \nDirections\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. See my interactive map \nCoordinates: 34.12666\, -118.65748 \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Vally: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark off-pavement.
