SUMMARY:💦Wet n' Wild(wood)
DESCRIPTION:This hike is the perfect summer hike. It will require several stream crossings along the Arroyo Conejo and Wildwood Canyon Creek so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet (if you don’t like walking on rocks); shorts recommended \nWe’ll visit the Wetlands and have a picnic lunch at shady Skunk Hollow\, a tree-lined area adjacent to a flowing creek with a picnic table. A nice little area. It will be almost all downhill to Skunk Hollow — \nWe’ll return to the cars via my secret trail and more stream crossings. Hike will be about 6.5 miles with 600 ft total ascent and rated EASY+ due to terrain. See Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nPark and meet under the trailhead tree at the end of Calle Yucca. SUMMARY:Ridge Route to Parker Mesa Overlook - Los Liones Loop
DESCRIPTION:First Post Fire Hike! And what better way to restart our Pali hiking but with an HWD Original! \nPerched high above the Palisades and Malibu\, the vista from the Parker Mesa Overlook is stunning. You can see all of the LA basin laid out before you\, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the crescent shaped coastline of Santa Monica to the east. \nThis isn’t your usual Parker Mesa Hike! Our ridge route starts near the Los Liones Canyon trailhead and makes a bee-line up a ridge to the Overlook with a 1400 ft gain in a mere 1.5 miles. Some parts are steep and loose. You’ve been warned! \nAt the top\, on the Parker Mesa Overlook\, there are a couple of benches where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Los Angeles coastline and a snack. We’ll take an extended break here to allow everyone to catch up \nWe will return via the hilly side trails of E Topanga Fireroad\, and the beautiful Los Liones Canyon \nThe Los Liones Trail weaves through a lush canyon just a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Slivers of big blue sea can be seen from much of the ivy and chaparral-lined canyon \nThe No Fireroad rule will be in effect! \nThis strenuous hike is rated DIFFICULT. Its a relatively short 5-mile loop\, but packs a wallop with about 2100 feet of total ascent. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections \nFrom Santa Monica or Malibu: Take the Pacific Coast Highway and turn on Sunset Boulevard. Go 0.3 miles on Sunset\, take a left on Los Liones and drive half a mile to the end of the street. Park on the right side of the street in the lot across from the church. \nThere is plenty of free street parking\, as well as two lots near picnic areas and restrooms. Arrive early; it can get buse. The hike starts at 9am\, not the parking.

SUMMARY:Franklin Canyon - Journey to the Center of the City
DESCRIPTION:This HDW original is a classic. On this 6 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. The first hill will be a workout\, but there is lots of shade on this one. Franklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle.
