DESCRIPTION:Join us for an out and back hike through the old stomping grounds of Edgar Rice Burroughs in Caballero Canyon. This is a great hike for folks who want some good exercise and at the same time enjoy the local beauty offered in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nHike is rated MEDIUM with 6 miles and 1000 ft total ascent. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nBring water\, snacks\, hat \nDirections to the Trailhead: \nMeet at the Caballero Canyon trailhead on Reseda Bl. From the 101 Freeway\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn south. Drive for about 2.2 miles. There is parking on both sides of the street; the trailhead is on the east side of Reseda Blvd. across the street from Braemar Country club. The trailhead is clearly marked with a big sign. Parking on street is OK. \nParking is free. \nDo not go to the very top of Reseda Blvd \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice falls on June 20th at 1:50pm…And what better way to start the summer with a short hike and lunch at Malibu Seafood — HWD’s favorite post-hike lunch venue? \nVideo: https://youtu.be/NJP-m1tCXxM?si=uSPgQmYCYb2QG54C with celebrity spottings \nOur hike will begin at sea level next to Malibu Seafood in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. After a while and an easy creek crossing\, We leave Corral Canyon for my hiking through pristine wilderness along the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. \nWe’ll return to the restaurant via another trail making a loop. Along the way we’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and some mysterious buildings… \n🦞🍷After the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio & Kitchen. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n🍾They let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the ocean and trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nHike is about 4.5 miles with about 1\,100 ft of total ascent and rated MEDIUM due to terrain. Clothing optional. \nDIRECTIONS\nDrive to Malibu Seafood at 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy and park on PCH or pay $12.00(?) at Sara Wan trailhead parking lot. Iron ranger accepts credit cards \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Hiking the Ventura River Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The Ventura River Preserve offers nearly 1600 acres of nature for us to frolic in. Located in the western Ojai Valley the Ventura River Preserve protects three miles of the Ventura River and surrounding canyons. \nThe property is home to a wide variety of wildlife including black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, badger\, coyote and mule deer\, to name a few. Abundant food\, shelter\, space and water make this a key habitat for local wildlife. In wet months\, frogs\, salamanders and other amphibians abound in the seasonal creeks. Birds of prey such as Great Horned Owls and a variety of hawks soar over the oak savannas. \nOnce the sprawling Rancho El Nido ranch\, we’ll hike through a historic vineyard and orchard \nWe’ll hike about 8 miles with about 1300 feet total ascent. Hike is rated MEDIUM – see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to Riverview Trailhead \nFrom the 101 Fwy head north on Hwy 33 towards Ojai. After 11 miles turn left on Baldwin Ave (150) for 0.3 miles. Then turn right on S Rice Rd. Riverview Trailhead is on left about 1.5 miles up\, just after W Lomita Ave. Parking is free.

DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at the Greenwell Preserve parking lot. We’ll hike up Ortega Ridge to the Ortega Reservoir and then onto the Coffin Family Trail\, passing through wildflower meadows and under botanical archways. We descend back to the ocean along Romero Canyon Creek. From there we’ll hook up with the Summerland Loop Trail\, walk a few blocks in the neighborhood\, past a historic barn and back to our cars. \nOptional: We’ll have lunch at the Padaro Beach Grill in Carpinteria. \nHike is about 4.5 miles with 900 feet total ascent and rated Easy+. SUMMARY:EZ Hike: Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:We’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with the Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \nOn the way back we’ll stop at a picnic bench overlooking Santa Maria Canyon for our break.
