SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves & More
DESCRIPTION:The Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of secret and little-used trails. We’ll visit and take a break at the Vanalden Caves. \nHike is about 6 miles and rated MEDIUM. See Hike Rating guide here \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. Lot is across the street from given address \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Olympia Farms to Hidden Pond at Rancho Potrero Open Space
DESCRIPTION:I’ve never seen water at Hidden Pond\, so let’s go check it out. Along the way we will loop around Rancho Potrero Open Space. I believe there is another little pond nearby – we’ll check that out also. \nOn the west end of the space is a property that used to be called Olympia Farms\, which was owned by Greek immigrant\, textile businessman and Arabian horse breeder George Patarias Huck. (Huck was tragically shot and killed in front of his home in Mt. Olympus in August 1984 at age 46.) \nHuck’s 638 acre property was sold to the Mountains Recreation and Conservancy\, City of Thousand Oaks\, Conejo Recreation and Park District and National Park Service for $4.2 million in 1993. 312 acres were carved out as an addition to Rancho Sierra Vista. The remainder is part of Rancho Potrero\, which is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA). \nIn the 2021-2022 time frame\, the Olympia Farms space was redeveloped and improved to include\, pedestrian paths\, a horse corral\, drinking fountain for people and animals\, picnic benches and a small amphitheater area. \n👉🏻Hike is about 8 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nThe Rancho Potrero Open Space area is located in Newbury Park off of Lynn Road\, just east of the intersection with Rancho Dos Vientos.

SUMMARY:In Search of Waterfalls at Malibu Creek State Park
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down to RSVP” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ffffff” custom_text=”#1c9ec5″ shape=”square” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I have recently learned that there are three waterfalls in Malibu Creek State Park. Two of them are illustrated in the 1983 and 1996 edition of Milt McAuley’s Hiking Trails of Malibu Creek State Park \n[asa2 tpl=”Book” align=”center” ajax=”1″]094256829X[/asa2] \nbut there are no directions or trails described. I found the person who took the photograph (several years ago) shown here and he described the location of one of them. Next to it is McCauley’s illustration. \n \nThe location of the 2nd waterfall remains a mystery. All I know it that its somewhere on or near the Mendenhall homestead (from the 1860s). I do know the location of the homestead so at least our search radius will be limited. Here is McCauley’s illustration: \n \nIn a perfect world this would be an easy hike with less than 4 miles and  about 600 feet of total ascent. Add to that some meandering\, creeking and bushwhacking making things more difficult.  I did find some overgrown trails  using satellite imagery that we will follow. Here is a 1976 view of the Mendenhall homestead area along with a modern view. I’ve marked a spot where I believe the waterfall may be. \n \nWear long pants\, long sleeves and bring with you a sense of adventure! \nOur Meeting Spot\nWe will meet on the corner of Seminole Dr and Crags Dr in the Malibou Lake neighborhood. Point your GPS to 1912 Seminole Rd and park on street — off pavement — close to the corner. \n \n  \nHere is a street view of approach to corner \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:🌕Easy Full Moon Hike & Potluck at Olympia Farms
DESCRIPTION:No white lights allowed on my night hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI \nOn a recent hike we discovered a great spot for a Full Moon Hike and Potluck. Its up on a hill overlooking Olympia Farms at Rancho Potrero. Atop the hill we’ll find relatively new picnic benches sitting on some old foundations dating back to the 1980s. \nIn March\, the Full Moon is the Worm Moon; if it occurs on or after March 21\, it is also the Paschal Moon. Tonight it will be 99.1% full. \n🧺🍷Bring food and drink to share. Since this will be an easy hike you can load up those backpacks more than usual 😋 \nSunset: 7:10 pm\nMoonrise: 6:55 pm \n⚠️No white lights allowed on my full moon hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI. If your vision requires a white light\, do not attend this hike. \nAt 5.5 miles and with 850′ of total ascent\, I am rating this hike EASY+ — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nWe will meet at the trailhead where S. Wendy Drive ends at Potrero Rd. If you require a real address\, point your GPS to 1360 S Wendy Dr\, Newbury Park\, CA 91320 and park on Potrero. Look for the alcoholics wearing backpacks 🤪
