DESCRIPTION:Happy 2024!\nWe’ll be starting our hike on the Castillo Trail in Wildwood Park\, probably a new trail head for many of you. From there we’ll descend into Wildwood Canyon with a couple of creek crossings and hook up with the Lynnmere Trail. We’ll loop around the south side of Wildwood Park with awesome views of Mount Clef Ridge and the Conejo Canyons Open Space. \nThis hike will be about 6 miles with 1500 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD hike rating guide \nDirections \nHead for the address posted and park on street. We meet in the cul-de-sac. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Caballero Canyon to San Vicente Mtn. Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start up the single track in pretty Caballero Canyon to Dirt Mulholland\, and then head East on the fire road for only less than a 1/4 mile and take another single track trail through beautiful canyons to a scenic overlook with views of the San Fernando Valley and the ocean. Here we will take a short rest before continuing toward San Vicente Mtn. Park\, home of one of the most well-preserved\, former Nike Missile Bases in the Southland. \nWe’ll take a break at the park\, eat our snacks\, and check out the stunning\, 360-degree views from the lookout (including the nearby Encino Reservoir). Then we’ll backtrack on the Dirt Mulholland to Caballero trail back to our cars. \nHere’s a rough AllTrails link to the route. \nSTATS\nLevel: Moderate\nGain: ~ 1\,200 ft.\nDistance: ~ 8 miles\nTime: ~ 3.5-4 hours\nType: Lollipop w/a few out-and-back sections and loops\, single track dirt and fire road\, entirely exposed\nDogs: Not permitted (trail crosses into Topanga St Park)\nWater: N/A @ TH\nRestrooms: N/A @ TH; there’s a Von’s at 18411 Clark St.\, a block E of Reseda\, and S of the 101 and N of Ventura Blvd. There are restrooms are available at San Vicente Mtn. SUMMARY:Falls Creek Lollipop & HWD Ranch West
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be modifying a difficult hike and making it a medium one this time. We begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. \nAlmost 20 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the “trails” we’ll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old “secret trails” are now established LA County trails; hikers\, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1\,600 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom the Santa Susana Pass Rd — between Rocky Peak Rd and Topanga Canyon Blvd — turn north on Iverson Rd. SUMMARY:Oak Canyon to China Flat - A Double Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike was requested by the original Mark E🙋🏻‍♂️. \nPerched 2\,000 feet above sea level in the hills between Simi Valley\, Oak Park and Thousand Oaks\, China Flat is an idyllic 1\,100-acre oak meadow that features rocky sandstone outcroppings and native oak woodlands.\nAlong our route we will pass by an old cistern\, a small silo and an abandoned farm vehicle that are vestiges of the area’s ranching history. There is also a vernal pond. \nWe’ll get there via the Rocky Ridge Open Space – a steep climb on the east side of Oak Canyon Community Park. After a loop around China Flat we will regturn via the China Flat Trail then down along Medea Creek that flows through the park into a duck pond by our cars. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM+ – see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nWe’ll be meeting by the duck pond at Oak Canyon Community Park in the first lot immediately to the left after entrance \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop - Extended
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Another HWD Original! \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \nHike into History\nA Visit to the Rancho El Escorpion Lime Kiln \nBell Canyon is the location of the Rancho El Escorpion lime kiln site. The site sits on  a seam of limestone running from Bell Canyon to Dayton Canyon and the Woolsey Canyon area (the sites of 2 more kilns). The kiln was constructed over a time period starting between the late 18th  and early 19th  centuries by a succession of native Chumash people and others of mixed Chumash and Mexican heritage. \nThe kiln was used to process quicklime (used on the San Fernando Mission buildings) throughout the nineteenth century. Over the years the kiln has become almost entirely covered with dirt\, its mouth filled in\, and is difficult to see (without me showing it to you). \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				2018\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				1987\n				\n		\n\n  \nViewing the Bell Canyon Limestone Quarry \nIn 1939 to 1941\, the limestone hilltop at the mouth of Bell Canyon was used to face the Sepulveda Dam Basin. \n\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”] Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain.
