SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop - Remake
DESCRIPTION:⌚EARLY START TIME🕰️ \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \n👉 Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See my hike rating guide. \nThere will be some shade during last mile. \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER (see https://www.meetuphikes.com/liability-waiver) and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Easy Hike: Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:Another shorter hike for a hot day (See Saturday’s hike also) We’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \nOn the way back we’ll stop at a picnic bench overlooking Santa Maria Canyon for our break. There are some interesting sandstone formations and caves to explore – or you can just sit and relax \nThere will be some shade along the way. Hike will be about 3.5 miles with 800 ft total ascent and rated EASY+ See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \n📺Check out this video from a previous hike: https://youtu.be/EJsNT8OpyLA \nDirections \nAddress is for reference. Park at the end of Viewridge Rd \nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge Rd and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge Rd. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail and head back to the cars \nHIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.

SUMMARY:🌠🍷Fireballs over Malibu - Perseid Party🎉🌠
DESCRIPTION:No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. Amazon has some inexpensive ones that have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nYou don’t need to get out of the city to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. Anywhere is fine as long as there are no lights in your line of sight. For us city-folk\, the Santa Monica Mountains provides some of the best viewing spots for watching the Perseid Meteor Shower. \nI have selected Saddle Peak as our viewing spot. At over 2\,800 feet\, Saddle Peak is the highest peak in the eastern/central Santa Monica Mountains \nWe’ll get there by way of Backbone Trail near where Stunt Road\, Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet. \n🍻🧺Bring food/snacks and booze to share. Bring your own cups\, plates\, etc \nThis year’s Perseid meteor shower began July 17 and ends August 24 with a peak during the predawn hours of Sunday\, August 13. We will be watching the show Thursday night and avoid the Friday and Saturday night crowds with their headlights and flashlights. \n📈There will be an EASY 1 mile hike — with a gentle 450 ft ascent — to our viewing location\, then 1 mile back they way we came. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe will arrive early to catch the sunset over Malibu and the Pacific. There will be panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the West\, and other ridges and peaks of the Santa Monica Mountains to the East and West. \n🚨No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. These have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nDIRECTIONS: \nHead toward the top of Stunt Road where it comes together with Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Road. Park in a turnout about 0.1 mile downhill from the top of Stunt. \nUse this link for precise navigation: https://goo.gl/maps/DrDP7CYwCghi8UHx6 \nSee https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/33783957/514754371/ for aerial vew
