SUMMARY:Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads - A Lollipop Hike
DESCRIPTION:Our destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail (aka Secret Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. \nWe’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail \nOptional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures \nHike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See Hike Rating Giude \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDon’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDirections \nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Valley: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark on street\, off-pavement. \nBring at least 2 qts water\, snacks\, sunscreen. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Hail To The Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/1/3/6/600_331189462.jpeg \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/4/6/a/600_331190282.jpeg \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake and the MASH site. \nHike will be about 6.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-ratings/ \nPost Hike shenanigans at Island Restaurant on the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rds \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nInteractive Map with post-hike lunch: https://goo.gl/UEFVF3 \nParking: \nIn addition to the parking lot there is parking on both sides of Lake Vista Dr. If you are parking in the lot\, please park efficiently as show in this photo: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/28595772/ \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety.
