SUMMARY:New Year's Hike: Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nWe’ll meet in the Malibou Lake Neighborhood on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr.

SUMMARY:Temescal Waterfall & Pasta
DESCRIPTION:Raise your hand if you’ve been to Temescal Canyon but never seen the waterfall at full flow…..or the 2nd waterfall. \nThose of you who raised your hand\, RSVP today! \nTemescal Canyon is a very popular hiking spot with great views of the ocean and LA basin on clear days\, a seasonal waterfall\, and a densely wooded canyon. \n💦But this won’t be your typical Temescal trek! I expect to see a gushing waterfall and a flowing creek. \n**😋**Post Hike Lunch at Spruzzo\nJust a couple miles away at the corner of Sunset and Palisades Dr\n538 Palisades Dr\, Los Angeles\, CA 90272 \nWe’ll begin at the lower end of the first parking lot and walk along Temescal Creek on the Sunset Trail. After 0.4 miles we’ll head up the Ridge Trail under chaparral arches with some nice views of the Palisades and the Pacific Ocean beyond. \nAfter a sustained climb we’ll turn west on the Leacock Trail toward wide ocean views. Then we will turn onto the less traveled Bienveneda Trail which will take us back up to Temescal Ridge. \nWe then descend into Temescal Canyon\, dropping through chaparral and heavier vegetation\, reaching the canyon floor and cross a foot bridge just downstream of the waterfall. We’ll can go off-trail to get a closer look. \n👉 Did you know there is a 2nd waterfall below the bridge? \nWe’ll hike along the creek back to our meeting spot as the the trail transforms into an easy stroll through pleasant groves. \nHike is rated MEDIUM at about 5 miles and 1\,300′ total ascent. See hike rating guide \nDirections \nTemescal Gateway Park is located in Pacific Palisades\, just one mile north of Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Boulevard. \nPark for free on Sunset or Temescal\, or enter park and use the first pay lot on the left. Meet at park entrance on corner under Park Sign \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Santa Monica Freeway (10) West until it becomes Pacific Coast Highway(PCH). Continue West on PCH. Turn right (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile. Park on street \nFrom the Conejo and San Fernando Valley\, take Topanga Canyon Boulevard South to Pacific Coast highway(PCH). SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.
