SUMMARY:Triunfo/Los Robles/White Horse Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThe last time we did this hike was 2 years ago on Nov 11. Back then it was a VIP hike\, but not today. This hike will be in the Los Robles area of the Santa Monica Mountains. We’ll begin at the Triunfo Canyon trail head and hike up one of the nicest trails in the Los Robles trail system\, including White Horse Canyon and Conejo Crest. \nHere is a slide show from that hike 2 years ago\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/oxnATxYOcak’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-uekj8z’ id=” custom_class=”] \nInstead of the usual loop we’ll be going off trail to explore the secret trails of the forbidden zone. We’ll take a break in our Conejo Clubhouse — if its still there. I haven’t been down there for a couple years so expect the unexpected. \nAt one point we’ll have a view of 3 lakes: Westlake Lake\, Lake Sherwood\, and Las Virgenes Reservoir \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nThe hike will be about 7 miles with about 1\,320 feet total ascent. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-uqarv7′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated MEDIUM. See Hike Ratings Guide here\n[/av_notification] \nPost Hike Lunch\n🍕Pitfire Artisan Pizza\n966 S Westlake Blvd #3\nhttps://goo.gl/maps/KF51Q4vEUu52 \nDirections\nTo get to the trailhead from SFV\, head west on 101 and exit Westlake Bl. Turn left on Westlake Bl for 1.1 miles and turn right on Triunfo for 0.4 miles. Make a left onto Tamarack. Drive up Tamarack toward 1909 and make a left into 2nd driveway just before gated community. Park in rear lot \nIf you are coming from Ventura side exit Hampshire Rd south to Triunfo. Turn right on Triunfo and right on Tamarack. Drive up Tamarack and make a left into 2nd driveway just before gated community. park in rear lot

SUMMARY:The Original E.T. Hike - Saddle Ridge Fire Assessment - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008! Since then we have improved upon the hike eliminating all but a few yards of sidewalk walking. Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. \nSo let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak- and sycamore-shaded canyons–Aliso and Limekiln–and some eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie and take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET.  Get the movie here \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van drivng into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations. \n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/tpKHedikPjs’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-jvl5bs17′] \n  \nHike is about 8 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. \n[av_notification title=’Warning’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8df’ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’red’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-ij6t46′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nWe’ll be hiking through some of the Saddleridge fire burn area that might present some obstacles and change the planned route\n[/av_notification] \nNO BEGINNERS \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-s3zor5′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:10K - 100K Hike -- Wirebreak - Santa Ynez Canyon Loop - Lunch at Reel Inn
DESCRIPTION:This hike will mark a milestone in HWD history. We now have over 10\,000 members and I estimate 100\,000 hiker-miles! Woohoo! 🎉 \nJoin our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nWe begin the hike by traveling south along Santa Ynez Creek\, climb a steep ridge to E. Topanga Fireroad\, skirt Trippet ranch and return via a descent down into Santa Ynez Canyon. Santa Ynez Canyon features chilly mountain pools\, several beautiful waterfalls\, and slim sandstone cliffs set in a cool oasis of lush oak and sycamore forests. \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nThere will be a 1\,000′ elevation gain between the 1.0 and 1.5 mile mark — you have been warned! Loop is 7.3 miles with total ascent of about 1700′. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nThe No Fire-roads Rule will be in effect!\n \n  \nI haven’t named this hill yet — maybe we can think of one when we reach the top. \n \n  \nPost-Hike Lunch at Reel Inn on PCH at Topanga\nDirections\nFrom PCH: Take Sunset Bl north 0.5 mile to Palisades Dr. Follow Palisades Dr north for 2.4 miles to Ver de la Montura. Turn left for one long block. Park near end of street and meet across the street from signed trailhead. \n

SUMMARY:V.I.P. Hike: Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:High above central Malibu is Saddle Peak\, just east of Malibu Canyon\, one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2\,805 feet. Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abondoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a short break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. We will complete the loop by descending Saddle Peak via the Cold Creek Preserve and upper Stunt High trail. \nHike is about 8 miles with 2000 ft total ascent \nSlide show from previous hikes\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/VJn9GQZ4KGg’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-ws6onb’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain.
