This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. SUMMARY:Stair Hike: Under the Banner of Blue Heaven #3 - 3 miles
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the hills of north Silver Lake\, where the vast Ivanhoe and Silver Lake reservoirs reflect the heavenly blue sky beneath Dodger Stadium and surroundings. This urban hike is led by Sierra Club trip leaders and covers 3 miles winding through stairs\, streets\, and sidewalks over two Silver Lake hills. The hike covers a range of local topics including the history of water\, infrastructure\, protected habitat\, mid-century modern architecture\, movie studios\, immigration and LGBTQ history. The two hills are each a 600-700 foot elevation gain on stairs for a combined total gain of 1\,200 feet. The hike starts at the Silver Lake Meadows\, just across the street from the Neutra VDL House at 2300 Silver Lake Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039. There is free street parking along Silver Lake Boulevard across from the reservoir and on Armstrong Avenue\, off of Silver Lake Blvd. The best option is to find parking on the east side of Silver Lake Boulevard before you reach 2300 Silver Lake Boulevard. Cross at the cross walk with a traffic light in front of the VDL House. You can bring well behaved dogs on leash.

DESCRIPTION:If you were at Dodger Stadium and jumped over Mt Washington to the Northeast\, where would you land? At our hike! We will climb 1\,000 stairs and gain 435’ cumulative feet on the first loop of our hike\, take a quick photo op with the folks doing tai-chi\, and then gain another 225 feet going up and down streets so steep the sidewalks have stairs. See if you can spot the urban vineyard\, a gypsy wagon\, and a bona-fide yurt along the way. Meet at the big sandstone Eagle Rock sign on the SW corner of N Figueroa St and La Loma Rd (parking available on streets and in the Vons/Habit Burger parking lot at 7307 N Figueroa Street (Eagle Rock\, 90041). Please arrive by 6:30 pm and be prepared to sign the required Sierra Club waiver. Come prepared with liquids\, layers\, and a light. Heavy rain cancels.

SUMMARY:Hike & Trail Work - Old Boney Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is a hike with trail maintenance event on the Old Boney Trail in the Point Mugu State Park where we will hook up with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (www.smmtc.org) to do some trail work under their supervision. \nThe hike distance for the day is ~3 miles in and then ~3 miles out with some mileage carrying tools. Trail maintenance will be for 6 HOURS (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) with a lunch break. Participants need to bring their lunch and water. Experience and tools not required as tools will be supplied and work will be supervised. It is recommended to bring your own gloves\, though there will be gloves on site to borrow. \nThere is a hard maximum of only 15 volunteers for this event (so if you RSVP you need to show up). If this goes well\, there will be a similar event scheduled for the following Saturday (3/8). Participants with RSVPs will be provided details on where and what time to meet (bcodyman@aol.com). DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fourth hike in the Wilderness Adventures Section 2025 Saturdays in the Santa Monica Mountains\, a moderate 9 mile\, 1900 gain loop hike in the Boney Mountain Wilderness on the Upper Sycamore Canyon\, Fossil\, and Old Boney trails with a side trip with brunch at the Danielson Monument. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nMeet at 8:00 AM at the Via Goleta parking for Rancho Sierra Vista (101 to Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks\, exit south\, 5 miles to Via Goleta\, left and continue mile to Satwiwa parking lot near the restroom). Park free in lot. \nThis is a Back Country hike\, and a medical form is required. Please print it out and carry it with you. Copies of the form will be available to fill out at the trailhead as well.
