This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. DESCRIPTION:Take a ramble beneath Heavenly Blue skies near the Hollywood Bowl. We’ll see the festive holiday lights in old Hollywood\, including the site of Rudolph Valentino’s house and the stair streets where gumshoes Philip Marlowe and Harry Bosch worked their cases. You won’t need keen eyes to see all the Dodger flags in the neighborhood. Work off those holiday calories and prepare for winter adventures by carrying a heavy pack like Saint Nicholas. Meet in front of Wingstop on Highland & Franklin (1900 Highland Ave\, LA 90068). Street parking is limited so arrive early. Hint: try a parking lot to the north. Bring water\, adventurous spirit\, strong legs and a love of stair hikes. Flashlight suggested. No restrooms. Heavy rain cancels.

If you’ve signed up for 2025 WTC\, take advantage of this training opportunity. \nBring water and sun protection\, and wear non-slip shoes (trail runners or hiking shoes are great). There are porta-potties at the beginning and flush toilets half way through the hike. \nTustin PD issues citations to cars parked before 7am\, so if you arrive early\, you can park at Cedar Grove Park and walk up the trail on the west side of the park\, past the elementary school\, to join us on the south entrance of PC. This will add about .75 miles each way to your morning.

DESCRIPTION:Come explore the hills of north Silver Lake\, where the vast Ivanhoe and Silver Lake reservoirs reflect the heavenly blue sky beneath Dodger Stadium and surroundings. This urban hike is led by Sierra Club trip leaders and covers 3 miles winding through stairs\, streets\, and sidewalks over two Silver Lake hills. The hike covers a range of local topics including the history of water\, infrastructure\, protected habitat\, mid-century modern architecture\, movie studios\, immigration and LGBTQ history. The two hills are each a 600-700 foot elevation gain on stairs for a combined total gain of 1\,200 feet. The hike starts at the Silver Lake Meadows\, just across the street from the Neutra VDL House at 2300 Silver Lake Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039. There is free street parking along Silver Lake Boulevard across from the reservoir and on Armstrong Avenue\, off of Silver Lake Blvd. The best option is to find parking on the east side of Silver Lake Boulevard before you reach 2300 Silver Lake Boulevard. Cross at the cross walk with a traffic light in front of the VDL House. You can bring well behaved dogs on leash.

We will climb 1\,000 stairs and gain 435’ cumulative feet on the first loop of our hike\, take a quick photo op with the folks doing tai-chi\, and then gain another 225 feet going up and down streets so steep the sidewalks have stairs. See if you can spot the urban vineyard\, a gypsy wagon\, and a bona-fide yurt along the way. Meet at the big sandstone Eagle Rock sign on the SW corner of N Figueroa St and La Loma Rd (parking available on streets and in the Vons/Habit Burger parking lot at 7307 N Figueroa Street (Eagle Rock\, 90041). Please arrive by 6:30 pm and be prepared to sign the required Sierra Club waiver. Come prepared with liquids\, layers\, and a light. Heavy rain cancels.

DESCRIPTION:Hike #3 in the 2025 Saturday in the Santa Monicas series\, is a moderate 8 mile\, 2000’ gain out and back hike with a couple loops starting at Leo Carrillo and hiking to scenic Nicholas Pond for lunch with spectacular ocean views and spring wildflowers. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nWe meet at 8:00 AM at the Leo Carrillo State Park parking lot (sometimes there is a wait to unlock the gate) or parkfor free on the side of the road on Pacific Coast Highway. \nThis is a Back Country hike\, and a medical form is required. SUMMARY:Hike & Trail Work - Old Boney Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is a hike with trail maintenance event on the Old Boney Trail in the Point Mugu State Park where we will hook up with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (www.smmtc.org) to do some trail work under their supervision. \nThe hike distance for the day is ~3 miles in and then ~3 miles out with some mileage carrying tools. Trail maintenance will be for 6 HOURS (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) with a lunch break. Participants need to bring their lunch and water. Experience and tools not required as tools will be supplied and work will be supervised. It is recommended to bring your own gloves\, though there will be gloves on site to borrow. \nThere is a hard maximum of only 15 volunteers for this event (so if you RSVP you need to show up). If this goes well\, there will be a similar event scheduled for the following Saturday (3/8). Participants with RSVPs will be provided details on where and what time to meet (bcodyman@aol.com).
