This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. SUMMARY:Saturday Santa Monica Mountains Peaks 2024 #10 - Valley to the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Hike #10 in the 2024 in the Saturdays in the Santa Monica Mountains series is the Valley to the Sea\, a strenuous 11 mile\, 1000 gain hike from the Valley to the Sea in memory of Willy Blumhoff with a stop at the Eagle Rock (1957′)\, the outing peak. This is a one-way hike with a car shuttle; it’s a variant of the one Willy took each year on his birthday. The hike will start at the Top of Reseda Trailhead\, taking the Garapito Trail\, summiting Eagle Rock\, stopping at Trippet Ranch for lunch\, and then taking the East Topanga Fire Road to Los Liones\, ending at PCH and Sunset. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nThis is a shuttle hike. Meet at 7:30 AM in the first parking lot on the right on Los Liones (PCH to Sunset Boulevard\, north 0.3 mile\, left on Los Liones) and shuttle to the Top of Reseda Trailhead. \nThis is a Back Country hike\, and a medical form is required. DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED to this date because of red flag warning.\nHike #10 in the 2024 in the Saturdays in the Santa Monica Mountains series is the Valley to the Sea\, a strenuous 11 mile\, 1000 gain hike from the Valley to the Sea in memory of Willy Blumhoff with a stop at the Eagle Rock (1957′)\, the outing peak. This is a one-way hike with a car shuttle; it’s a variant of the one Willy took each year on his birthday. The hike will start at the Top of Reseda Trailhead\, taking the Garapito Trail\, summiting Eagle Rock\, stopping at Trippet Ranch for lunch\, and then taking the East Topanga Fire Road to Los Liones\, ending at PCH and Sunset. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nThis is a shuttle hike. Meet at 7:30 AM in the first parking lot on the right on Los Liones (PCH to Sunset Boulevard\, north 0.3 mile\, left on Los Liones) and shuttle to the Top of Reseda Trailhead. \nThis is a Back Country hike\, and a medical form is required. We’ll meet at the trailhead for a 4:00pm departure\, beginning on the lush Los Liones Trail\, meandering through a vibrant canyon before connecting to a scenic fireroad. As we ascend to Parker Mesa Overlook at 1\,525 feet\, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin\, stretching from downtown to the majestic Palos Verdes.\nThis hike will culminate in a magical sunset at approximately 6:00 pm\, with the thin crescent moon setting shortly thereafter\, creating a perfect backdrop for our adventure. DESCRIPTION:Hike #11 in the 2024 Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains series\, will be an adventurous 9-mile\, 2700’ gain loop hike to 6 peaks\, a point\, and a rock. We will bag six peaks including the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains\, Sandstone Peak (3111’)\, then Boney Peak (2825’)\, Exchange Peak(2953’)\, Tri-Peaks (3010’)\, Pop Top (2940′)\, and Big Dome (2912’) with additional stops at Inspiration Point (2766′) and Balanced Rock(2300′). Poles could be useful on some portions of this route and long pants and long sleeve shirt recommended. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. DESCRIPTION:WTC Intro Hike – O: Point Vicente To Hesse Park\nNov 16th. 8am\n7.5 miles RT 1000’ft gain\nPlease join us for our Introduction hike From Point Vicente to Hesse Park. This hike is designed for people to learn what Wilderness Travel course is all about. The course covers Day Hikes\, Overnight Hikes\, Map and Compass\, rock scrambling\, snow Travel\, snow camping. What is the proper clothing to wear. Day packs\, Back Packs and a whole lot more. The Class starts in January from 4 different areas. If you interesting in learning about this hiking course please join us. \nIntroduction: Our hike will begin at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Located next to Point Vicente Lighthouse\, this small natural history museum is an ideal whale-watching spot. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 405 Freeway take Hawthorne Boulevard south\, up and over The Hill to the end of Hawthorne Blvd. at Palos Verdes Drive West. Turn left at the traffic light\, (where you will find a Starbucks for coffee). Turn right at the next turn off\, which will be the entrance to Point Vicente Interpretive Center\, and park in the parking lot. \nIf you take the 110 Freeway go south to the Pacific Coast Hwy off-ramp and head west. Turn left when you come to Hawthorne Blvd. and follow the directions listed above. \nThe Hike: The hike will take us along the coastal cliffs of Palos Verdes in the city of Palos Verdes Estates. If the weather cooperates\, the shoreline and ocean views are magnificent and we might be able to get a great view of Catalina Island and Malibu. We will follow a path that takes us to Palos Verdes Drive West where we will cross to the center median where there is a walking/running path. We continue hiking till we come to Paseo Lunada\, turn right for one block and head up the Lunada Canyon Trail that will take us up the hill to Hesse Park. DESCRIPTION:December 6-8\, 2024 (registration link at the bottom)\nClimbSmart is the largest gathering of climbers at Joshua Tree\, and is owned and managed by Friends Of Joshua Tree (501 c3\, founded 1991). Now in its 29th year\, this event kicks off the climbing season in Joshua Tree with education and stewardship as the primary pillars\, as well as the chance to give back to our Park and those who actively conserve it. Over 300 attendees are anticipated every year\, and the mix of climbers represents a unique blend of new entrants to the sport and old-school traditionalists. Partners in anchoring the Climb Smart presentations include the National Park Service\, top athletes\, native tribes of the region and local legends. \nClimb Smart is a 3-day event\, running all day Friday through Sunday on a special weekend in the Fall each year. Special mini-clinics run by working guides at Joshua Tree National Park offer introduction and refresher content in 2 or 3 session tracks\, as well as managed toprope climbing for those who simply want to try their skills on the quartz monzonite stone. Each evening a catered dinner is provided and a stage show delivers entertainment\, inspiration and more education in multimedia format. We always have great brand sponsors and local and regional retailers as well as a killer raffle. The attendee of Climb Smart will leave more experienced\, better networked\, psyched for climbing and likely with some swag items too. \nOne of the unique offerings at Climb Smart is working with professional climbing guides in mini-clinic format which allows for getting to know several different organizations\, style differences\, and consistencies between climbing schools. In the end\, all of the guide organizations invited to participate in Climb Smart are top shelf\, longstanding professional outfits permitted by the Park and have strong reputations in the climbing community. \nIt’s VERY IMPORTANT to realize that the clinics at Climb Smart are NOT full course days with guides and instructional outfits. DESCRIPTION:Get your pre-holiday conditioning hikes in. Join us for a Friday sunrise hike at Peter’s canyon. We’ll do a six mile loop starting at the south entrance. After the hike\, feel free to join us for coffee at Peet’s. \nThis is a great hike for people wanting to learn about WTC and meet WTC leaders. If you’ve signed up for 2025 WTC\, take advantage of this training opportunity. \nLikewise\, save the date for Dec. 13\, same place\, same time. \nBring water and sun protection\, and wear non-slip shoes (trail runners or hiking shoes are great). There are pit toilets at the beginning and flush toilets half way through the hike.

This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. SUMMARY:Stair Hike: Under the Banner of Blue Heaven #1 - 4.5 miles
DESCRIPTION:Take a ramble beneath Heavenly Blue skies near the Hollywood Bowl. We’ll see the festive holiday lights in old Hollywood\, including the site of Rudolph Valentino’s house and the stair streets where gumshoes Philip Marlowe and Harry Bosch worked their cases. You won’t need keen eyes to see all the Dodger flags in the neighborhood. Work off those holiday calories and prepare for winter adventures by carrying a heavy pack like Saint Nicholas. Meet in front of Wingstop on Highland & Franklin (1900 Highland Ave\, LA 90068). Street parking is limited so arrive early. Hint: try a parking lot to the north. Bring water\, adventurous spirit\, strong legs and a love of stair hikes. Flashlight suggested. No restrooms. Heavy rain cancels.

There are porta-potties at the beginning and flush toilets half way through the hike. \nTustin PD issues citations to cars parked before 7am\, so if you arrive early\, you can park at Cedar Grove Park and walk up the trail on the west side of the park\, past the elementary school\, to join us on the south entrance of PC. This will add about .75 miles each way to your morning.
