SUMMARY:Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains 2024 #9 - Verdugo Peak
DESCRIPTION:Hike #9 in the 2024 Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains series\, is a strenuous 11 mile\, 2800 gain hike in the Verdugo Mountains. The trail starts with a challenging steep ascent to Mount Thom and then mellows out along the ridge with panoramic views of the city. We’ll take Verdugo Motorway past Tongva Peak to brunch at Verdugo Peak with a relaxed descent down Brand Motorway. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Hiking poles and footwear with good traction are recommended as some portions of the trail are covered in scree. Rain\, excessive heat\, and Red Flag alert cancels. \nMeet at 8:00 AM at the Miss American Green Cross statue (statue is just NW of Brand Library) in Brand Park (located in Glendale take Western Avenue off the Interstate-5). There is plenty of parking available at Brand Park. \nThis is a Back Country hike\, and a medical form is required. Please print it out and carry it with you. DESCRIPTION:Event Organizer:\nJenny Gardelle\njgardelle@gmail.com\nCar Wreck and Dripping Cave hike \nJoin us on Saturday\, September 14\, at 7 a.m.\, for Jenny’s O-provisional hike to the locally famous Car Wreck and Dripping Cave trails. We’ll meet at the West Ridge trailhead near Alta Laguna Park (3300 Alta Laguna Blvd\, Laguna Beach\, CA 92651). Please park on the street and plan to arrive early\, as this is a popular spot for hikers and mountain bikers. \nFrom West Ridge trailhead\, we’ll turn down Mathis and all the way to Wood Canyon trail\, from which we’ll access Dripping Cave trail to explore this legendary cave. From there we’ll head back to Mathis and turn onto Car Wreck trail to visit another local legend. \nThis route is out and back\, with a loop midway\, and is just over 5 miles with around 1\,000 feet of gain. We’ll go at an easy pace\, but you might want to bring some poles for the Car Wreck trail. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. DESCRIPTION:Sunset Hike: Los Liones to Parker Mesa Overlook\nJoin us for a stunning 7-mile sunset hike in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains on Saturday\, November 2nd. We’ll meet at the trailhead for a 4:00pm departure\, beginning on the lush Los Liones Trail\, meandering through a vibrant canyon before connecting to a scenic fireroad. As we ascend to Parker Mesa Overlook at 1\,525 feet\, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin\, stretching from downtown to the majestic Palos Verdes.\nThis hike will culminate in a magical sunset at approximately 6:00 pm\, with the thin crescent moon setting shortly thereafter\, creating a perfect backdrop for our adventure. We’ll take a leisurely break at the overlook to enjoy some snacks and soak in the views before making our way back under the stars.\nDetails:\n– Meeting Place: Los Liones Trailhead in Pacific Palisades\, by the main “Los Leones Canyon” Gate at 4 p.m. (Free parking available along the road; please do not park in the Church Parking Lot).\n– Mileage: 7.5 miles round trip\n– Elevation Gain: 1\,600 feet\nWhat to Bring:\n– Sturdy hiking shoes\n– 2 liters of water\n– Snacks\n– A headlamp for the return hike

DESCRIPTION:Hike #11 in the 2024 Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains series\, will be an adventurous 9-mile\, 2700’ gain loop hike to 6 peaks\, a point\, and a rock. We will bag six peaks including the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains\, Sandstone Peak (3111’)\, then Boney Peak (2825’)\, Exchange Peak(2953’)\, Tri-Peaks (3010’)\, Pop Top (2940′)\, and Big Dome (2912’) with additional stops at Inspiration Point (2766′) and Balanced Rock(2300′). Poles could be useful on some portions of this route and long pants and long sleeve shirt recommended. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Poles would also be useful and long sleeves/pants recommended. \nPlease fill out and print the Sierra Club medical form and bring it with you. DESCRIPTION:WTC Intro Hike – O: Point Vicente To Hesse Park\nNov 16th. 8am\n7.5 miles RT 1000’ft gain\nPlease join us for our Introduction hike From Point Vicente to Hesse Park. This hike is designed for people to learn what Wilderness Travel course is all about. The course covers Day Hikes\, Overnight Hikes\, Map and Compass\, rock scrambling\, snow Travel\, snow camping. What is the proper clothing to wear. Day packs\, Back Packs and a whole lot more. The Class starts in January from 4 different areas. If you interesting in learning about this hiking course please join us. \nIntroduction: Our hike will begin at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Located next to Point Vicente Lighthouse\, this small natural history museum is an ideal whale-watching spot. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 405 Freeway take Hawthorne Boulevard south\, up and over The Hill to the end of Hawthorne Blvd. at Palos Verdes Drive West. Turn left at the traffic light\, (where you will find a Starbucks for coffee). Turn right at the next turn off\, which will be the entrance to Point Vicente Interpretive Center\, and park in the parking lot. \nIf you take the 110 Freeway go south to the Pacific Coast Hwy off-ramp and head west. Turn left when you come to Hawthorne Blvd. and follow the directions listed above. \nThe Hike: The hike will take us along the coastal cliffs of Palos Verdes in the city of Palos Verdes Estates. If the weather cooperates\, the shoreline and ocean views are magnificent and we might be able to get a great view of Catalina Island and Malibu. We will follow a path that takes us to Palos Verdes Drive West where we will cross to the center median where there is a walking/running path. We continue hiking till we come to Paseo Lunada\, turn right for one block and head up the Lunada Canyon Trail that will take us up the hill to Hesse Park. DESCRIPTION:O: Bird Walk/WTC Intro Hike \nJoin us for a leisurely paced hike around the wetlands on a looped trail and birdwatching hotspot. Over 200 species of birds visit and depend on this wetland annually. One of the Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)\, which begins January 2025 (www.wildernesstravelcourse.org). Subjects include safe mountain travel\, map & compass and wilderness first aid. Hike begins with an introduction to the reserve and WTC overview including free Sierra Club Ten Essentials Cards. Easy hike with a stop halfway thru. The trail surface is gravel or a natural surface (dirt\, rocks). There are benches along the route. Bathrooms are available in the South parking lot at the trailhead. Please no dogs or bicycles. Bring water\, and wear boots/shoes with good tread. SUMMARY:Post Thanksgiving Potluck Hike: Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Moderately challenging 8.4 mile\, 2150 ft gain hike through Colby Canyon ending at Josephine Peak. We will begin at the Colby Canyon trailhead\, pass a seasonal waterfall\, and begin the moderately strenuous ascent through oaks and chaparral to Josephine Saddle. From the saddle\, we will head west along the Strawberry Spur Trail to reach the peak. We will break for a potluck lunch at the peak – please bring an item to share (Thanksgiving leftovers welcome). This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer.
