SUMMARY:Visit the California Poppy Bloom . Antelope Valley. LA Carpool startpoint
DESCRIPTION:If you have never been here before . . . it worth seeing. \nIf you have been before . . . it’s time to revisit. \nLet’s get to the event date first . . . The poppies bloom anywhere from Feb to May. April 15th is usually just right. \nPlacing this in mid-March as it may be early. And if when we get close to the date . . . we will check all the websites that have the expected bloom dates. Such as https://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html \nWe’ll walk some or most of the 8 miles of trails–not all of it. \nEach spring\, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through late May\, \nParking Fees\n$10 per vehicle\n$9 per vehicle with a senior on board (62 and over)\n$5 per vehicle with DPR Disabled Discount Card (see below) \nBe prepared for wicked strong winds and bring sunblock! The desert temperatures can vary widely and change suddenly\, so bring layers for unpredicted changes in weather. \nDogs are NOT allowed on trails or in the visitor center (just like any California Sate Park) \nWhether you most enjoy expansive fields or the close-up study of a single flower\, this is the place to visit. \nLocation – Directions The Reserve is located 15 miles west of Lancaster at 15101 Lancaster Road. \nFrom Highway 14: Take the Avenue I exit and head west 15 miles. Avenue I becomes Lancaster Road. \nFrom I-5: Take Hwy 138 east and turn right on 170th Street West. Make a left at the end\, onto Lancaster Road. Follow the road two miles. \nCarpool? YES!!!! \nWe will meet at the meet time and address. That location is a designated Park & Ride. It is a free lot that has roving security in the area. So it’s safe to leave your car for the day. \nWe meet and then re-shuffle to then pool and caravan to the Poppies. \nWhy this location as meet-point? It’s rather central. And just off the 5 . . . the main freeway we need to take to get there. \nCarpool to our meetpoint? Sure. Post in the comments on the main group posting. \nThis is a free hiking event that take a little more work to make happen than a quickie local thing. This is not local in-town. As such you will drive to and meet there. OR you will use the carpool info sent a week before to work on setting up a carpool. \nGot questions?\nClick Here to send a Direct Message to Marc (screen name Oddie) \nOther notable hiking we have planned: \nApr 6 Calcite Mine Slot Canyon Hikes and “The Slot” hike in Anza Borrego\nMay 18 Bridge To Nowhere\nMay 25 Yosemite Hikes! MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!! (Vernal\, Nevada Falls\, Yosemite Falls Upper or lower\nNov 16 The Great LA Walk 2024 \nBut we will post those to here as we get closer. \nNOTICE: For our events we do not discriminate by Age\, Gender\, Gender Preference\, Ethnicity\, National Origin\, Race\, Color\, Religion\, or even Belly Button Lint.

SUMMARY:WTC Book Club is back!
DESCRIPTION:Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild. \nIn many ways\, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered\, temperature-controlled\, overfed\, under-challenged lives actually be the leading cause of many of our most urgent physical and mental health issues? \nEaster’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to the mystical country of Bhutan\, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding thirty-three-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more. \nAlong the way\, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness\, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.
