SUMMARY:Ebikes\, Fried Chicken and a Coastal hike
DESCRIPTION:We’re going to ride some EAHORA ebikes in Anaheim\, have fried chicken for lunch and then do a beach hike. \nEBIKES – We’re going to check out EAHORA bikes. David just bought the one pictured above one and we found out that we could test ride several of their models at Duke’s Bicycles in Anaheim. That ‘s our first stop where we’ll do some test rides and see how we like them. \nFRIED CHICKEN – Anaheim is also the home of Knott’s Berry Farm which Paul claims has the best fried chicken. We’re heading there for lunch. \nBEACH HIKE – We’ll do the “Point Vicente Beach Walk’ (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/point-vicente-park)\, a 5.6 mile coastal trail in Palos Verdes. We may stop at Nelson’s restaurant (https://www.terranea.com/dining/nelsons) for a drink\, snack or dinner as we’ll be walking right past it during the hike. \nIf you have to be somewhere later that day\, don’t commit to this. This event will be over when it’s over. Also\, if you don’t plan to do all of the events\, you’ll need to ride with someone who has similar plans. The end time posted above is a wild guess. \nMEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:Our first stop is: Duke’s Bicycles\,1401 S Kraemer Blvd unit D · Anaheim\, CA at 11 am \nOur 2nd stop is “MRS. KNOTT’S CHICKEN DINNER RESTAURANT” at 8039 Beach Blvd\, Buena Park\, CA 90620https://tinyurl.com/s4s3tjmj \n3rd stop is in Rancho Palos Verdes:https://tinyurl.com/vv6n3864 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 9:50 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. We can load the cars up here\, since there isn’t a car shuttle involved on this event. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 500 feet \nDISTANCE: 5.6 miles \nTERRAIN: Single track and road \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: Advanced Beginner \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

This one will have us do some elevation gain of around 400′ with a 3+ mile walkabout for the dogs in Camarillo Grove County Park. \nIf you would like to take a hike for the dogs\, then bring your friendly pooch for a friendly dog hike. We’ll do this doggy trek of 3+ miles using Camarillo Grove Park Trails. If you are a hiker without a canine friend and would like to hike with our buddies\, this would be a great opportunity to take advantage of a very easy local hike in Camarillo. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Camarillo Grove County Park on the north side of 101 freeway exit Camarillo Springs Rd. in Camarillo (SEE LINK BELOW) and drive a 1/2 mile to Park entrance. SUMMARY:New Las Virgenes Creek Trail (Overgrown?)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nI will be hiking 4 miles along the relatively new Las Virgenes Creek trail again\, which we did recently as a tribute to Babu Bill. We found the trail\, after all the money and hard work put into building it\, has been neglected since it was opened. However\, at the end of our hike\, we heard workers apparently clearing out the overgrowth with chain saws. For that reason I want to go back and check their progress. This will be perfect for strong beginners that can handle 4 miles with little elevation gain and possibly an overgrown trail again. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Juan Bautista de Anza Park 3701 Lost Hills Rd\, Agoura Hills. I’m glad we were able to gather and hike in his honor. \nAt some time in the future\, plan was September/October\, but with rising covid that could be pushed further out\, there will be a contra dance in Santa Barbara sponsored by Babu. Babu can be spotted in several Santa Barbara contra dance videos on Youtube. Admission will be free that night\, his gift to the contra dancing community. I’ll let you know. I think quite a few hikers would enjoy contra dancing. I tell people that if they can walk briskly\, count to 8 and follow directions (listening and obeying directions being the hard part) they can learn to contra dance. Always done with a live band and dances are taught and prompted. Easy for most to learn in a few nights. Introductory lessons given about 1/2 hour before dances start to get newcomers oriented. That is how I first met Babu many years ago. \nHappy trails\, \nWendy

SUMMARY:Camarillo parks walkabout
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWere continuing our series of easy Friday hikes for CDH’s beginners as we step it up each week in order to eventually do easy intermediate hikes. The goal is to help some of our members recovering from injuries to get back in shape as they join our slower and older CDH members on easy 3+ mile walks/hikes with very little elevation gain. Join me if you would like to be part of this. It’s also a great way to get started. \nThere are three parks in Camarillo (Mission Oaks Dog Park\, Mission Oaks Park and Heritage Park) and Mission Oaks Tree Walk that we can walkabout. There will be minimal sidewalk use linking up these parks with 90% of the hike in the parks. So\, here’s the chance to join our Monday hikes and not be overwhelmed on this one with speed\, distance and elevation gain. \nLOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at The Heritage Park at 9:00 a.m. SEE LINK BELOW FOR EXACT LOCATION IN PARKhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’03.7%22N+118%C2%B059’00.7%22W/@34.2343641\,-118.9850756\,653m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.2343614!4d-118.983528 \nRESTROOMS: Yes \nDISTANCE: 3.5+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 200′ \nLEVEL: Beginner\, slow\, old and walking wounded \nTERRAIN: This event will have us walking on paved walkways and trails\, \nDOGS ALLOWED: YES\, but you must keep them on a leash and clean up after them. SUMMARY:LAKE ELEANOR'S LOOP TREK (THE CAVE AND SENTINEL) - a rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nA LOCAL\, BUT CHALLENGING TREK \nSHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well \nTHE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains \nIf you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer\, then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop\, we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile\, hiking 3/4 mile on a trail\, trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails\, going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile\, and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done\, you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers\, you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor\, Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress\, becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from a previous trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP LOCATION: Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 8:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time\, Energy\, Fear\, Pain\, Blood\, Sweat\, Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves\, trekking poles\, micro spikes and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day @ Rancho Sierra Vista
DESCRIPTION:I’ll lead in with saying that this event is not an official Calabasas Day Hikers event\, and I’m not the official host. \nWith Saturday being National Public Lands Day\, I thought I’d take some hike time and spend it giving back to one of the areas our group uses most. It’s sponsored by one of our benefactors\, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund. It’s local; the Rancho Sierra Vista is in Newbury Park. I’ve volunteered there a few times. The staff is great at explaining what the goal is that day and how to achieve it. A great experience\, and it affords an understanding of the hard work needed to keep our natural areas well\, natural. It also leaves you with a sense of accomplishment\, and the staff will always appreciate your support. \nPlease follow this Eventbrite link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/national-public-lands-day-rancho-sierra-vista-tickets-168650432985?utm_source=eventbrite&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=reminder_attendees_48hour_email&utm_term=eventname&ref=eemaileventremind \nThere will be snacks (granola bars\, etc.) and drinks. I recommend you bring your own so you know you have something you’ll eat. \nI’ll also note that the event has it’s own COVID practices\, so please follow those when you go. Whatever other rules\, if you’re showing signs of COVID\, please stay home and take care of yourself. \nWeather: Mid-60s at start; mid-70s at end (as of Thursday at 8 PM). UV Index is 7\, so bring sunscreen.Parking: FreeDogs: Not on this oneWater: They provide\, but you might bring some. I carry a couple of liters in a pack so it’s always plentiful and nearby. It’s warm when you’re working under the sun.Known hazards: Snakes\, trip/fall (wear hiking boots to keep feet protected). Depending on where we work\, maybe poison oak. \nDirections (see map below and at the link above):From Camarillo/Oxnard/Ventura:US-101 South to Wendy Dr. Turn left onto Wendy Dr. Turn right onto Borchard Rd. Turn left onto S Reino Rd.\, which will change to Potrero Rd. Turn left onto Big Sycamore Canyon Rd. Follow Big Syc Canyon to the parking lot. \nFrom LA and the SF and Antelope Valleys:Follow CA-14 South to the I-405 South\, then on to the US-101 North. Exit at Ventu Park Rd. and turn left. Turn right onto Lynn Rd. After 3.4 miles\, turn left onto S Reino Rd.\, which will change to Potrero Rd. Turn left onto Big Sycamore Canyon Rd. Follow Big Syc Canyon to the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nCicLavia \nCicLavia is a quarterly event in Los Angeles where the streets get shut down and people can bike\, skate\, run\, walk\, skateboard\, and spectate. It’s always fun. We’ll be biking. These are streets that you wouldn’t normally bike on due to traffic congestion and danger. This is a very casual trip as we’ll most likely be stopping for coffee and/or food along the way or anything interesting that we see and so those stops will determine when we get back. It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon on bikes. \nHere’s the official description:https://www.ciclavia.org/heart_of_la21 \nHere’s the route map:https://tinyurl.com/yetwmadd \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nIt’s always good to bring a bike lock. \nMEETUP LOCATION:The North-West end of MacArthur Park at the intersection of West 7th Street and S. Park View street or as close to this as you can get.https://tinyurl.com/tck234w4 \nIt’s important that you get there on time as we will be leaving that location promptly at 9 am. \nMEETUP PARKING:There is street parking in the area. My general preference is to park at611 S Carondelet St. Los Angeleshttps://tinyurl.com/9ar4vpczwhich is a parking garage that charges about $9.From there you just head south on Carondelet St past Wilshire and then turn left on 7th Street. It’s a 0.3 mile ride. \nIf you have trouble finding us\, call my cell# (818-307-6460). \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Sunday.\, October 10th\, no later than 8:45 am. \nDISTANCE:12 miles if you do the route once.24 if you say “Hey that was fun\, let’s do it again” \nDURATION: 5+ hours \nELEVATION GAIN: 150 feet \nBIKE TRAIL DESCRIPTION: LA City Streets \nTHE PACE: 10 MPH on up \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner on up \nMY CELL# IS 818-307-6460 \n“Learn to ride a bicycle. SUMMARY:TOM SLOAN SADDLE TRAIL LOOP
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nWe will begin our trek on a fire road then continue above the shaded Bear canyon to the Tom Sloan Saddle. After a short break continue on the newly restored TS trail and then stop for snacks at the Mount Lowe Campground. This is where the Old Tavern was built back in 1895 by professor Lowe. A few of the ruins from the Tavern and the Mt. Lowe Railway system can be seen here. There are also displays of pictures and a bit of history of its existence from 1893 to 1938.After the obligatory group photo we will return back to our cars by ascending the Mt. Lowe fire road \nA BIT OF HISTORY: RESTORATION PROJECTThe original trail was built many\, many years ago by the U.S. Forest Service. it was used as a short cut to get from the Lowe campground to Millard and the Arroyo Seco. The Mount Lowe Road was then built which destroyed most of the trail and it wasn’t well maintained. After the Station Fire in 2009 it was permanently closed. The impressive trail restoration was made possible by Restoration Legacy Crew back in 2018. It took them many months of hard work and dedication to bring this trail back to life. The perfect positioning of the rock steps along the path can be appreciated as well as many other attributes that make this trail worth checking out. \nStats:Level- Strong Intermediate/NO BEGINNERS PLEASEDistance- 8 milesGain- 1400′ (approximate)Terrain- rocky fire road\, single track trailsRestrooms- not available at trailhead (there is one at the campground)Dogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKEParking- dirt road at the trailheadA National Forest Pass is not required. \nI would like to be back to the cars by 2:00 PM \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.Lunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them.Hand sanitizer & mask (optional) \nEARLIER MEET TIME LOCATION: 7:00AMhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/Milmada+Dr\,+La+Ca%C3%B1ada+Flintridge\,+CA+91011/@34.2085854\,-118.2003645\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2e9fb97d40ee9:0xa72e02a9070ad690!8m2!3d34.208581!4d-118.1981705.From here we’ll caravan to the trailhead. \nEATON SADDLE TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS:https://www.google.com/maps/place/Eaton+Saddle+Trailhead/@34.2393818\,-118.0955521\,648m/am=t/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2e7edecba22af:0x4ebc9e7d4338d8d8!8m2!3d34.2393774!4d-118.0933634 \nPlease join us for lunch at the La Canada-Flintridge Town CenterThere is a variety of food places to eat.https://www.google.com/maps/place/990+Town+Center+Dr\,+La+Ca%C3%B1ada+Flintridge\,+CA+91011/@34.2048424\,-118.202024\,17z/data=!3m1!5s0x80c2e9fc288954a1:0x79962bab30c04ef6!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x80c2e9fc28e4164b:0x9f9115b9ea5a8d58!2sBlaze+Pizza!8m2!3d34.204838!4d-118.1998485!3m4!1s0x80c2e9fc28956f11:0x7598d16cf3b6ae96!8m2!3d34.2048937!4d-118.1998907 \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since will lose their membership with CDH.
