SUMMARY:RAZORBACKS SERIES IN THE LOS PADRES MOUNTAINS #1
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nHave you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but missed out. Well\, I’ll now be posting a series of events for all our CDH members to enjoy this area below pinyon pine covered ridges. We’ll start off with the easier hikes and work up to exploratory ones. I’ll number these so that you’ll be able to identify which ones you have done. As in Bryce Canyon\, there are many canyons\, but unlike Bryce where you have to stay on the trails\, this area has but one trail. the rest of the events will be x-country routes. All our events will first have us meet at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec and car pool from there to our destinations about 30 minutes away. \n======================= RAZORBACKS #1 ============================== \nThis first area of the Razorbacks is where I was first introduced to these spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest while on a Cub Scout outing at Camp Three Falls over 25 years ago with my son. Access will be via a 4+ mile 500′ gain round trip trail starting at 5500′ and reaching our viewing destination at 6000′. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 8:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to the Three Falls Boy Scout Camp where we will start the hike. \nDISTANCE: 4+ miles \nROUTE: Double and single track trails to the ridgeline overlooking THE BOWL. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 500’+/500’+ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars no later than 2:00 p.m. It’s a short hike and a long drive\, but the views are well worth it. We’ll spend a lot of time soaking in the views before heading back down. This event is perfect for our WW (Walking Wounded) members. \nLUNCH OPTION: After the hike\, as an option\, those interested can join me for a late lunch The Falcon Nest in Frazier Park. \nLEVEL: Advanced beginner \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nNO DOGS ALLOWED

This hike is for those that like my short but challenging treks. \nCAR SHUTTLE: Yes \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Ladyface’s eastern trailhead on Kanan Rd. at 7:30 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B007’59.8%22N+118%C2%B045’24.8%22W/@34.133283\,-118.7590757\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1332829!4d-118.7568872 \nDURATION: 4 hours give or take depending on the group. \nROUTE: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/paramount-ranch-to-ladyface-b1a59b3 \nTERRAIN: Easy trails to extremely steep rock scrambling \nDISTANCE: 5 tough miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 1500+ feet \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest hiker \nLEVEL: Advanced Intermediate Hiker \nRESTROOM: At start of hike in Paramount Ranch \nMY CELL #: 805-358-5972

Back then we took a treacherous route which I have since changed to a much safer cross country trek to view these spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest. Access will be via a 4+ mile 800’+ gain round trip trek starting at 5300′ and reaching our viewing destination at 6100′.Like our first event in this series\, we will be on a ridge looking down at the carvings mother nature has created via water erosion. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 7:30 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to our destination a half hour away to begin our cross country trek. SUMMARY:EXPLORATORY TREK TO THE HOODOOS WITHIN THE RAZORBACKS - SERIES #3
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nEXPLORATORY TREK AMONGST THE HOODOOS OF THE RAZORBACKSI have to get this in now before the rains come and make it too hard to traverse the canyons. \nThis trek should prove to be more provocative than all previous trips into the Razorbacks as we hike amongst new Hoodoos and slot canyons. \nHave you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but missed out. \n======================= RAZORBACKS #3 ============================== \nThis third area in the Razorbacks was first seen by us when we took a cross country trek above Bowl #3 to view the spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest. For this trek we will be inside the bowl traveling 5+ miles with a gain of at least 1000′ in search of the incredible and mysterious Hoodoos that haunt this unique place. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 8:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to our destination a half hour away to begin our cross country trek. Although this trek will be geared for our intermediate hikers that like an off trail hike\, our stronger hikers will enjoy this as well. Just remember that it will be at a slow intermediate pace. It’s a long day for a short trek but so worth it. \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Agoura Hills Park and Ride at 6:30amhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B008’43.2%22N+118%C2%B045’37.6%22W/@34.1453344\,-118.7626267\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1453295!4d-118.7604382 \nDISTANCE: 5+ miles \nROUTE: Cross country route along a ravine to reach the Hoodoos and slot canyons which we will explore for the first time in this new area. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1000’+/1000’+ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars no later than 2:00 p.m. It’s a short hike and a long drive\, but the views are well worth it. We’ll spend a lot of time soaking in the views before heading back down. \nLUNCH OPTION: After the hike\, as an option\, those interested can join me for a late in Frazier Park. \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker who likes cross country hiking and scrambling. \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nNO DOGS ALLOWED

SUMMARY:WESTLAKE OVERLOOK TRAIL (A local monster)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nTHE LAS VIRGENES RESERVOIR \nWESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains \nTired of mundane hikes\, then join me on one of my favorite local transcendent treks (Forth time posted on our CDH site). \nThis is a Frankenstein type trail that was put together by stitching up some local “use” trails overlooking the Westlake Village area. This monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. There are two peaks along the way that will require some class 3 rock scrambling over very steep terrain. The pay off will be near the end of this trek when you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood\, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This is similar to the Transcendent Taylor Trek seen in Jotce’s video\, but instead of an in and out trek\, I have added “use” trails at the beginning and end so that we can accomplish this via a car shuttle\, thus avoiding the monotony of back tracking. The 7+ miles 2000’ gain is one of the toughest around this area. So\, if you feel that you have what it takes and the site of blood doesn’t bother you\, sign up for this local monster. \nCheck out the pictures taken by members and the video that Joyce made of our adventure in this area: \npics (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/25816653/) \nvideo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1ScUY2p8_4&feature=youtu.be) \nMEET UP LOCATION: Exit the 101 FWY at Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks. Guaranteed to feel like you’ve done well over 12 miles when you’re done. \nPACE: We’ll travel as fast as the slowest trekker. These hikes will be at a slow pace around 2 mph and slower if need be. Elevation gains will start out with less than 200′ and slowly work their way up each week. \nThere are three parks in Camarillo (Mission Oaks Dog Park\, Mission Oaks Park and Heritage Park) and Mission Oaks Tree Walk that we can walkabout. There will be minimal sidewalk use linking up these parks with 90% of the hike in the parks. So\, here’s the chance to join our Friday hikes and not be overwhelmed with speed\, distance and elevation gain. \nLOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at The Heritage Park at 9:00 a.m. SEE LINK BELOW FOR EXACT LOCATION IN PARKhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’03.7%22N+118%C2%B059’00.7%22W/@34.2343641\,-118.9850756\,653m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.2343614!4d-118.983528 \nRESTROOMS: Yes \nDISTANCE: 3.5+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 150′ \nLEVEL: Beginner\, slow\, old and walking wounded \nTERRAIN: This event will have us walking on paved walkways and trails\, \nDOGS ALLOWED: YES\, but you must keep them on a leash and clean up after them. SUMMARY:MT. BADEN POWELL - THE UNPARALLED ASCENT AND DESCENT ROUTE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nBefore the rain and snow hits this area and while it’s nice and cool\, I’m planning on taking on Mount Baden Powell via The Big Horn Mine. \nTHIS EVENT WILL INVOLVE 2.75 MILES OF VERY STEEP OFF TRAIL HIKING ALONG RIDGES and 2.75 miles of trails. Don’t let the low mileage fool you\, this will be a great conditioning hike. You’ll be taking on Mt. Baden Powell as so few have ever done before. \nTHE TREK: From The Vincent Gap parking area at 6585’ (mile marker 74.80)\, we will hike along an easy 400’ gain in elevation over 2 miles to The Big Horn Mine\, which we can explore for awhile. From there the route to the top of Mt. Baden Powell along its eastern backbone is the most challenging and by far most avoided\, in fact\, it’s not even listed in The Sierra Club’s routes to the top. This no nonsense kick in the @$$ cross country route will require a person with legs of steel and fearless of heights. This steep backbone at times resembles a knives edge with steep drop offs into the huge bowl of Mine Gulch\, and it makes the backbones of Mt. Baldy look meek in comparison. Once at the top\, we will break for a well deserved lunch for at least an hour\, savoring over our accomplishment. From here we will descend yet another off trail ridge back to Hwy. 2. This event is accomplished by way of a short 2 mile car shuttle. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS AND TIME: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road. We will all meet here no later than 7:00 a.m. and car shuttle up Angeles Crest Hwy. 2 to (mile marker 73.00). From there we will shuttle over to Vincent Gap parking area (mile marker 74.80) to begin our trek. An Adventure Pass will be needed to park on Hwy. 2 at Vincent Gap. \nDURATION: This will be an all day event\, so if you have to be back at a certain time\, then please don’t sign up. \nTERRAIN: A very very steep ridge which will make Register Ridge seem easy. \nDISTANCE: 5.5 extremely challenging miles at times \nELEVATION RANGE: From 6585′ to 9399′ with an overall gain of 3000′. \nTHE PACE: 2 MPH moving pace on the 2+ miles of trails and what ever pace it takes on the ridges with several breaks along the way. \nLEVEL: Wednesday’s CDH core group and advanced intermediate Trekkers. \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring lots of water\, since this will be a very demanding trek up the ridge. Having trekking poles and micro spikes will help. It’ll be cold\, bring gloves and layered clothing.

SUMMARY:PARMA PARK HIKE IN SANTA BARBARA
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nParma Park has been on my list of areas to hike in for some time. Here’s a chance to join me on what should be a new area for most of us to explore in Santa Barbara. \n======================================================================INFO I FOUND ABOUT PARMA PARK \nParma Park is enormous and a fabulous open space\, which makes it a popular place with hikers\, bikers\, and dog walkers. It is snuggled into the foothills\, where you will find live oaks and sage\, peace and quite and refuge from the sound of the highway. This is a very rustic park that has a couple of picnic tables and that’s it. There are no other creature comforts. \nFeatures: Alcohol Allowed\, Biking\, Hiking Trail\, Horseback Riding\, Parking On Street\, Passive Open Spaces\, Views\, Wildlife and BirdingDog Policy: Dogs Allowed On LeashResidents seeking a large open space park close to town may want to visit this park. It is the largest City open space park\, encompassing 200 acres of oak woodland and chaparral along Sycamore and Coyote Creeks. It is known for its history\, habitat\, and recreational uses including its popularity as a landing spot for paragliders and hang gliders. \nThe park provides passive recreation opportunities for hikers\, dogs on leash\, and equestrians. Mountain bike riders may use the park only on the fire/access road. Hang gliders and paragliders use the open grassland between the El Cielito and Mountain Drive entrance as a landing site. The main entrance along Stanwood Road includes a picnic area and equestrian staging area. \nThere are approximately six miles of trails including the Plateau Trail\, Creek Trail\, Stanwood Trail\, Ridge Trail\, and dirt fire/access road. A public trail easement also provides access via the Mountain Drive North entrance. For sweeping views of the City of Santa Barbara\, Montecito\, and the Santa Barbara Channel Islands\, take the Ridge Trail to Rowe’s table. Named for Rowe McMullen\, a long-time volunteer who helped establish trails in the park\, Rowe’s table is the highest point in the park at 775 feet. \nParma Park contains three major creeks and a diverse array of native plant communities including chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian forest\, coastal sage scrub\, and remnant patches of native grassland. Park vegetation and creeks provide habitat for wildlife and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing\, especially birds. \nBecause of the limited street parking at the trailhead\, most of us should car pool with others from the Thousand Oaks Park & Ride at 7:30 a.m. \n===================================================================== \nAfter the hike\, I will be debriefing at The Siam Elephant in Carpinteria orThe Rincon Brewery Carpinteriahttp://www.siamelephantusa.com (http://www.siamelephantusa.com/)https://www.rinconbrewery.com/menu-carpinteria \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about an hour’s drive to the trailhead. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Stanwood Drive at Parma Park entrance no later than 9:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B026’48.8%22N+119%C2%B040’58.9%22W/@34.4468791\,-119.6835778\,231m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xa38b73ea2de9c28f!7e2!8m2!3d34.4468775!4d-119.6830289The entrance may be closed to vehicles. For example\, labeling\, sorting and breaking down boxes. \nSince the Salvation Army also provides many other services during major disasters\, help may be needed with preparing personal hygiene kits and special packages for families in need. \nNo guarantees but last year the Salvation Army provided snacks and drinks for volunteers. \nIf you wish to participate please send me a PM with your email address/phone number and I will forward to the coordinator. \nI will email the warehouse location once everything is confirmed. \nThe two volunteer dates are Tuesday 12/14 and 12/16 (I will post a separate event for this date).Hours are the same for both dates 9am to 12pm. \nParking is free. \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since Jan 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on one of CDH’s series of Santa Barbara Coastal Range treks. We’ll hike a trail we’ve done before that will be interesting with views of the ocean. This hike is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES) \nOur first trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll visit the western half of the park which will take us to The Gaviota Wind Caves. We’ll take on several trails (Yucca\, Hollister\, Beach to Back Country\, Woodland) and the Trespass and Tunnel View Trails as well as a STEEP rugged ridge to the caves\, to give us a total of 8+ miles on this hike. This will be accomplished via a car shuttle. We’ll be spending some time exploring the rock formations where the wind caves are. You’ll want to wait for me bringing up the rear so as to not miss out on the various side trails that we’ll be taking to overlooks and caves. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route to the overlooks and the caves. \nThis area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day. \nThis trek will involve a car shuttle from our meetup point to the trailhead. \nLooking forward to sharing another Santa Barbara coastal range trek with you. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Just past the main entrance to Gaviota State Park no later than 9:00 a.m. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Take the 101 Fwy. to the Gaviota State Park exit. on the left side of the 101 Fwy. shortly after heading inland once you’ve reached Gaviota. SEE MAP ABOVE. Turn left and drive 0.5 miles to parking area along road which is .2 of a mile past the Gaviota State Park entrance. To save money\, avoid parking in the State Park since there’s a $10 fee to do so. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:15 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.5 hour’s drive to Gaviota State Park. \nDISTANCE: 8+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1600’/1800′ \nTHE PACE: 2 mph \nDURATION: 6 hours \nTERRAIN: Single and double track trails plus a very steep ridge to the caves \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nOPTIONAL LUNCH: I’ll be stopping off at Woody’s in Santa Barbara for lunch.5112 Hollister Ave\, Santa Barbarahttps://www.woodysbbq.com/menu \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nRain may cancel the hike. If so\, I will reschedule for another day.
