SUMMARY:BURNHAM\, THROOP AND HAWKINS - The quest continues
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \nTHE QUEST: My pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Mount Burnham\, Throop Peak and Mount Hawkins this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll be taking on Mount Burnham\, Throop Peak and Mount Hawkins via Dawson Saddle and finishing at Windy Gap. This trek is only 7.5 miles with a 2200′ overall gain consisting mostly of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle.\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nMICRO SPIKES AND POLES ARE RECOMMENDED \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: After dropping a car/s off at The Windy Gap Trailhead we’ll drive to the Dawson trailhead where the trek begins to Mount Burnham. \nMOUNT BURNHAM: Standing at 8900′\, Mount Burnham is one of the highest peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. It is named for Frederick Russell Burnham the famous American military scout who taught Scoutcraft to Robert Baden-Powell and became one of the inspirations for the founding of the Boy Scouts. From there we’ll double back towards Windy Gap\, picking up Throop Peak. \nTHROOP PEAK: Standing at 9118′\, Throop Peak was named for Amos G. Throop founder of Caltech formerly called Throop College. The peak marks the northwestern boundary of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. Having bagged two peaks\, we’ll then take on a third\, Mount Hawkins. \nMOUNT HAWKINS: Standing at 8783′\, Mount Hawkins will be our final peak to conquer before heading down to Windy Gap. \nWINDY GAP: From this vantage point one faces into a seemingly perpetual wind that blows up from the broad canyon below. The benchmark here is posted at 7\,588′ \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. (BOOTS ON\, READY TO GO).\nIF MEETING THE GROUP THERE\, YOU MUST STATE SO\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B012’31.7%22N+118%C2%B011’59.8%22W/@34.2088224\,-118.2021197\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x3a7e81cac75a935a!7e2!8m2!3d34.2088179!4d-118.1999312 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 5:45am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location.\nIF MEETING THERE\, LET ME KNOW\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043 \nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:30 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch at The Habit Burger Grill/ Pandera Bread in La Canada. \nTERRAIN: Popular trails as well as an extremely dropping down from Windy Gap to Hwy. 2. \nDISTANCE: 7.5 miles \nELEVATION RANGE: Gain of 2200′ and a loss of 2800′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. \nLEVEL: Advanced Intermediate \nMY CELL NUMBER IS: 805-538-5972 \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO

SUMMARY:ISLIP PEAK - The quest continues
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \nTHE QUEST: My pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Mount Islip this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll be taking on Mount Islip from Windy Gap\, but we won’t be doing it the easy way via the PCT. Instead we’ll be dropping down to a trail on her south face before linking up with a trail coming up from Crystal Lake so as to make it more of a challenge. From there the fun begins as we go xcountry down to the PCT which will take us to the Mount Williamson Trailhead via Islip Saddle. This trek is only 9+ miles\, but it packs a punch with a 3000′ overall gain consisting of some popular trails\, “use trails” and no trail at all. This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle.\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. From here\, there will be no trail as we make our way down a ridge to the PCT trail which will take us to Islip saddle. \nISLIP SADDLE: This saddle sits between the two sister peaks Williamson and Islip\, and is the second highest pass along the Angeles Crest highway. We’ll pass through this saddle as we hike along the PCT trail. \nPCT TRAIL: The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) begins in southern California at the Mexican border and travels a total distance of 2\,650 miles to the Canadian border. From Islip Saddle\, we’ll head up to the Bump. \nTHE BUMP: This is a high point high in the granite folds of Mt. SUMMARY:WILLIAMSON\, GOODYKOONTZ AND COOPER CANYON FALLS
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/](http://%5Bgo%20to:%20https//wp.me/P9MbG4-hC%5D(go%20to:%20https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)) \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll visit two air force cargo plane crashes (C119 & C46) as we make our way from Mt. Williamson to Buckhorn Campground. At our half way point we’ll visit Goodykoontz Peak before dropping down to the cool pools of Little Rock Creek and Cooper Canyon Falls. This trek is only 8.5+ miles\, but it packs a punch with a 3000′ overall gain consisting of some popular trails\, “use” trails and no trail at all. This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle and the drivers will need an ADVENTURE PASS. \nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. Cross country hiking experience would help for this. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \n**MICRO SPIKES\, POLES AND GATORS ARE RECOMMENDED**\n**AND DON’T FORGET THOSE WATER GUNS TO COOL OFF AT THE FALLS** \n**DAY’S AGENDA** \n**START:** After dropping a car off at Buckhorn Campground (Burkhart Trailhead)\, we’ll caravan to the The Williamson Trailhead where the trek begins to the 1ST PEAK. \n**1ST PEAK:** Mt. Williamson at 8214 ft. is the second highest peak north of highway 2 in the San Gabriel Mountains. From there we’ll follow THE RIDGE. \n**THE RIDGE:** Pleasant View Ridge starting at Mt.Williamson offers continuous views over desert and high mountain country. IT’S HERE WHERE WE’LL TAKE A SIDE RIDGE ROUTE TO CHECK OUT THE CRASH SITE OF TWO AIR FORCE CARGO PLANES (A C46 AND A C119) before heading down to the 2ND PEAK. \n**2ND PEAK**: Following yet another ridge takes us to Goodykoontz Peak at 7558′ which offers a great view of Williamson Rock below. From there we’ll drop down to the CREEK. \n**THE CREEK:** Little Rock Creek is a desert bound creek fed by the springs high in the granite folds of Mt. Williamson. We will cross this beautiful creek at its 5640′ elevation point. In a short distance we’ll reach THE FALLS. \n**THE FALLS:** “**Cooper Canyon Falls** is a beautiful waterfall that flows almost year round\, but roars in April-May as the spring snow melts.” *Socalhiker* \n**MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:** 7:00 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. (BOOTS ON\, READY TO GO).\n***IF MEETING THE GROUP THERE\, YOU MUST STATE SO\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.***\nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road. DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nUNHOSTED EVENT \nI had planned to take a group to the June 21 (Tuesday’s) “Free Day” at the lovely Descanso Gardens so got 12 tickets\, but now have tested positive for COV-SARS2 so would like to invite group members to take themselves to the garden for free Tuesday at 10:30 am. If the tickets are unused the Gardens will still admit the same number of people so it’s no loss to the Garden but if a group wants to assemble and guide themselves while social distancing I can provide 12 tickets and you may stay as long as you like. Please be aware of the ongoing COVID surge in the Southern California area and take appropriate measures. I got four shots and never stopped masking indoors and became a hermit and spoke to nobody for months and still got it! \nParking: Free on site.\nDistance: just a meander on mostly paved or hard packed paths\, 0.8-1.6 miles at most.\nGain: maybe 250 feet.\nKnown Dangers: Allergies\, too much sun\, evil plants\, too much native flora\, lawyers.\nWhat you’ll see: https://www.descansogardens.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/New-map.pdf\nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descanso_Gardens

SUMMARY:Griffith Park hike\, Travel Town\, and the Walt Disney Barn
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \n* **The three questions must be answered with a “yes”** \nNEED HELP? Go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nThis is not a conditioning hike. My hikes are designed to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the trails. As a team\, we stay together and hike as fast as the slowest hiker\, sometimes it could be me. We will stop at various points to wait for the slower hikers.\n————————————————————————————————– \n***ALL ABOARD!*** \nWho loves trains as much as I? \nToday’s Father’s Day treat is all about trains and of course\, a hike. \nWe will meet at the Travel Town Museum parking lot in Griffith Park at 9:00am and begin promptly at 9:10. The museum opens at ten but the gates to the parking lot usually open about 8:00. If the gates are closed\, there is a dirt parking lot for hikers directly across the street. \nWe will start the morning with a trek up and around the hills above the Travel Town Museum. The hike is 3.88 miles with an elevation gain of 636’. If it’s too warm\, we will take a shorter and shadier hike. \nAfter the hike: \n* First Stop – Walt’s Barn and LA Steamers. We’ll explore the barn and miniature trains.\n* Second stop – Travel Town. We’ll explore the trains\, take the self guided Whistle Stop tour\, and take a train ride. \nParking and admission are free\, however\, bring cash for train rides and donations. \nBring 2 liters of water\, hat\, snacks. Wear good hiking shoes/boots\, bring your poles if needed\, hat\, sunscreen. \n**Travel Town Museum:** \nHome \n \nDedicated on December 14\, 1952\, the museum is home to 43 full-scale railroad engines\, cars and other rolling stock. It depicts the history of railroad transportation in the western United States from 1880 to the 1930s\, with an emphasis on railroading in Southern California and the Los Angeles area. \nTrain rides are $5.00/person. \nWikipedia: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travel_Town_Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travel_Town_Museum) \n**Walt Disney Barn:** \n[https://www.carolwood.org/walts-barn/](https://www.carolwood.org/walts-barn/) \nOperated by the non-profit Carolwood Foundation\, Walt’s barn is a showcase of his passion for railroading. It’s filled with trains of all scales\, many of which were donated to by his animators and friends that shared his hobby. Many of Walt’s personal items and tools are on display and he even hand-made all of the work benches. \n**LA Live Steamers:** \n[https://lalsrm.org](https://lalsrm.org/events/month/) \nSteamers is one of the oldest and largest of the live steam clubs in the United States. Almost everything you see in the facility was built by members of LALSRM\, including tunnels\, bridges\, tracks\, switches\, buildings\, and many of the trains. \n**For your listening enjoyment:** \n* Chattanooga Choo Choo: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa2_GH_bilg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa2_GH_bilg)\n* Doris Day Choochoo Train: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd266Z2i644](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd266Z2i644) \n**Directions:** \nTravel Town is right next to the 134 Freeway at the Forest Lawn Drive exit. \nAddress: 5200 Zoo Dr\, Los Angeles\, CA \nGoogle Coordinates: 34.153853\, -118.308466 \nGoogle Map: [https://www.google.com/maps/place/5200+Zoo+Dr\,+Los+Angeles\,+CA+90027/@34.1539373\,-118.3107407\,925m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2bff285d11221:0x7927102d4bdab0ed!8m2!3d34.1539329!4d-118.308552?hl=en&authuser=0](https://www.google.com/maps/place/5200+Zoo+Dr\,+Los+Angeles\,+CA+90027/@34.1539373\,-118.3107407\,925m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2bff285d11221:0x7927102d4bdab0ed!8m2!3d34.1539329!4d-118.308552?hl=en&authuser=0)

SUMMARY:The California Monarch Butterflies' recovery from near-extinction
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by butterfly educator Betina Loudermilk who will discuss the factors that spurred West Coast monarch butterflies’ miraculous population recovery in 2022 from near-extinction in prior years. She will also discuss her own 7-year effort to create a [butterfly-friendly habitat](https://www.betinaslittlefarm.com/) and offer information and tips for attendees who want to do the same. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday June 8th at 7:00 pm\, hosted by the Conejo Open Space Foundation. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nHer talk\, entitled “The Monarch Miracle\,” will focus on environmental circumstances such as habitat loss and climate change that caused the butterfly population crash and what influences—human and otherwise—may have contributed to its resurgence. \nBetina is the proprietor of Betina’s Little Farm\, site of her butterfly garden\, where she conducts workshops and events for families. She taught equestrian skills for a decade at Pierce College and has also served as a naturalist at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. “My goal is to inspire people to create connectivity through their backyards for our local bugs and butterflies\,” she says. “I want to get people interested in butterfly gardening so they can help out too.” \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the [COSF Speaker Series](https://cosf.org/events/open-space-speaker-series/) has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \n[https://cosf.org/events/meetup/](https://cosf.org/events/meetup/) \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:JACKSON LAKE LOOP - A 7.6 MILE 1500' GAIN HIKE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)](http://[go%20to:%20https//wp.me/P9MbG4-hC%5D(go%20to:%20https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)) \nThe route has single and wide track trails. The views along the way are spectacular. Starting from Jackson Lake\, we’ll accomplish this by taking the Blue Ridge above Jackson Lake via an 7.6 mile loop with an overall gain of 1500′ along the way. \nThe Jackson Lake Trail is a high-quality singletrack snaking through the woods on the northern slope of the San Gabriel Mountains. Some of the most beautiful forest in the range can be seen along the trail\, including huge ponderosa pine\, jeffrey pine\, white fir\, live oak\, black oak\, big-leaf maple\, alder\, and willow. The black oak and big-leaf maple turn brilliant reds and yellows in the fall\, providing a photographers’ feast that includes tremendous views across the southwestern Mojave Desert.\nWest Blue Ridge provides stunning views down the East Fork San Gabriel River and across to 10\,064′ Mount Baldy \nDrivers parking at Jackson Lake will need an ADVENTURE PASS. \nNo beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nDAY’S AGENDA and some of the features \nSTART: Once we all arrive at Jackson Lake around 7:30 a.m.\, we’ll begin our trek to the RIDGE. \nTHE RIDGE: BLUE RIDGE (around 7500′) offers awesome views into the depths of the east fork of the San Gabriel River and high mountain country as we make our way along THE TRAIL. \nTHE TRAIL: The PACIFIC CREST TRAIL is probably the most well known of all the trails on the west coast. We’ll be hiking a small portion of this trail before ditching the trail for another trail taking us back down to Jackson Lake where we’ll end this adventure. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Jackson Lake parking lot at 7:30am.\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B023’32.5%22N+117%C2%B043’40.3%22W/@34.392364\,-117.7284102\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80c3175026bd64f3:0x9d79da1f52370f32!2sJackson+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d34.3921432!4d-117.7265246!3m5!1s0x0:0xc312aa741094c4c3!7e2!8m2!3d34.3923638!4d-117.7278633](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B023’32.5%22N+117%C2%B043’40.3%22W/@34.392364\,-117.7284102\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80c3175026bd64f3:0x9d79da1f52370f32!2sJackson+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d34.3921432!4d-117.7265246!3m5!1s0x0:0xc312aa741094c4c3!7e2!8m2!3d34.3923638!4d-117.7278633) \nDURATION: 7:30am to no later than 1:30pm. \nTERRAIN: Well defined trails \nDISTANCE: 7.6 miles miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 1500′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. SUMMARY:BIKE RIDE - Temescal Canyon to Fishermans Village
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nBIKE RIDE FROM TEMESCAL CANYON TO FISHERMANS VILLAGE AND BACK \nWe’re headed to the Beach!!! We’ll be starting on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (aka the beach bike path) at Temescal Cyn and Pacific Coast highway and heading south to the end of Washington Blvd in Venice\, checking out a bit of the Marina a bit farther up Washington Blvd and then heading to Fisherman’s Village. We’ll then retrace our route back to Temescal. We’ll likely stop for a bite to eat and/or coffee (probably both) and returning. \nIf you’re late\, get on the bike path and head South (ocean will be on your right). \nA helmet is also strongly suggested and a light jacket is also a good idea. A bike headlamp is a must as we may be returning in the dark and the last section of northbound bike path can be dangerous without a light. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 17000 Pacific Coast Highway\, Pacific Palisades. If you go downhill on Temescal Canyon road and cross Pacific Coast Highway\, you’ll see a small building on the right. We’ll be on the South Side of that building. \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Get on Pacific Coast highway. Head towards Temescal Canyon. When you come to that in intersection\, turn into the paid parking lot towards the beach or park up the hill on Temescal Canyon for free. \nIf you have trouble finding us\, call my cell# (818-307-6460). \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Monday June 6th at 4 PM \nPARKING FEE: Free on Temescal Cyn Rd. Probably about $9 at the beach parking lot. Not sure how late you can park in the beach lot. Make sure you ask about that before you park there. \nDISTANCE: 20 miles round trip \nDURATION: 4 hours \nELEVATION GAIN: minimal – it’s a pretty flat route \nBIKE TRAIL DESCRIPTION: A paved two lane bike path and a bike lane on Chandler Blvd. \nTHE PACE: 9 MPH on up \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner on up \nMY CELL # IS 818-307-6460

SUMMARY:LITTLE ROCK CREEK via WINSTON RIDGE and PEAK (2 peaks on the S.C. 100 peak list)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)](http://%5Bgo%20to:%20https//wp.me/P9MbG4-hC%5D(go%20to:%20https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)) \nOur Wednesday Trekkers know how to cool down on a hot day\, so we’ll do just that as the temps scare off others. I will take the group in for some cooling off fun in Little Rock Creek. The first two peaks are very easy to bag and that will be done early in the hike before it gets too warm. After that\, we’ll be dropping down a ridge all the way to Little Rock Creek as the heat builds up and hopefully we’ll find a pool deep enough to submerge in. The water is one of the coolest in the San Gabriel Mountains. After a long cool break in the Creek we’ll take the last 1.75 miles on the Burkhart Trail as it goes up to the Car or cars dropped off at The Buckhorn Campground. Total miles will be 8 miles with a 1500′ gain and a 2000′ loss in elevation. As we drop down to just a 100′ above the creek the going gets a bit steep which will require using your hands to assist in the descent. Micro spikes will help here. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains as we bag two peaks on the Sierra Club’s 100 peak list. The route we will be following this time has “use” trails\, for the most part\, which strong intermediate hikers will enjoy. The views along the way are spectacular and the idea of bagging some peaks along the way is a bonus. \nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. Cross country hiking experience would help for this. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to loose anyone. \nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:00 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch at The Habit Burger Grill in La Canada. \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: Once we all arrive at Cloudburst Summit (7034′) at mile marker (LA 57.10)\, we’ll first drop off a car or cars at the Burkhart trailhead before taking on the 1st PEAK. \n1st PEAK: Winston Peak at 7502′ will be our highest elevation along this planned route\, and it will be bagged before heading out along THE RIDGE. \nTHE RIDGE: Winston Ridge (7003′) offers distinct continuous views over desert and high mountain country as well as overlooking THE CREEK below. \nTHE CREEK: Little Rock Creek is a desert bound creek fed by the springs high in the granite folds of Mt. Williamson. We will cross this beautiful creek at its 5640′ elevation point and enjoy a pool and COOPER CANYON FALLS. \nCOOPER CANYON FALLS: “**Cooper Canyon Falls** is a beautiful waterfall that flows almost year round\, but roars in April-May as the spring snow melts.” *Socalhiker*\nIt’s here where the WWW will most likely take their revenge out on me in an all out water fight before heading out on an uphill 1.75 mile hike in heat to Buckhorn Campground to finish the hike. PACK THOSE WATER GUNS! \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location. SUMMARY:Trails Cafe to Mount Hollywood to Dante’s View to Griffith Observatory...
We will stop at various points to wait for the slower hikers. \nToday’s hike is 5.25 miles with an elevation gain of 780’. We will begin and end the hike at the historic Trails Café on Fern Dell Drive. We will meet at 8:30 and start at 8:45. Give yourself time to arrive and find parking\, it can get crowded. Watch for No parking signs. \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks\, electrolytes\, hat\, sunscreen. Wear good hiking/walking shoes\, bring poles if you need them. \nBeginning at the Café\, we will hike the West Trail for about a mile before crossing over W. Observatory Road. After crossing the road\, the West Trail merges with the Mt. Hollywood trail that leads up to the top. Bring your cameras because you’ll definitely want to take pictures of the breathtaking views of Los Angeles. We will continue down the Mt. Hollywood trail and stop at Dante’s View\, the Berlin Forest\, and the George Harrison tree before reaching the Griffith Observatory. At the observatory\, we will hang out for awhile and walk around its grounds. On the last leg of our hike\, we’ll continue down the Observatory trail end our day at the Trails Café with lunch and a slice of pie. The sandwiches are really good and Huell Howser loved their pies. \nAfter lunch you can go home or walk through the Ferndell Nature Trail\, a shaded dirt path also known as Griffith Park’s Enchanted “Nature Museum.” \nLInks: \n* AllTrails map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/trails-cafe-to-mount-hollywod-9b8ef27\n* Trails Café: https://www.facebook.com/TheTrailsCafe/\n* Huell Howser at Ferndell and the Trails Cafe: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3-EpGiICk&t=9s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3-EpGiICk&t=9s)\n* Dante’s View: [https://www.larchmontbuzz.com/larchmont-village-life/dantes-view-griffith-park/](https://www.larchmontbuzz.com/larchmont-village-life/dantes-view-griffith-park/)\n* George Harrison Tree: [https://daytrippin.com/2016/11/27/special-tree-dedicated-to-former-beatle-george-harrison-in-los-angeles/](https://daytrippin.com/2016/11/27/special-tree-dedicated-to-former-beatle-george-harrison-in-los-angeles/)\n* Berlin Forest: [https://modernhiker.com/hike/hike-to-berlin-forest/](https://modernhiker.com/hike/hike-to-berlin-forest/)\n* Griffith Observatory: [https://griffithobservatory.org/](https://griffithobservatory.org/) \n**Details:** \n* Parking: Free on street. SUMMARY:NEWLY RESTORED GOLD CANYON TRAIL TO YERBA BUENA RIDGE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO\nHOW TO UPDATE YOUR PROFILE:\nhttps://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nGold Canyon trail has been recently restored by my trail Angel Sean & the Forest Service. It’s been closed since the 2009 Station fire and is now officially opened. I had the privilege of hiking this trail two weeks ago. Not only is it beautiful but it is overwhelmingly filled with wildflowers. So\, I would like to share this newly restored trail with others before the wildflowers vanish. \nWe will start by scrambling down a use path off the main road. We will walk along the creek until we reach the Gold Canyon wash for about a mile\, just before we start ascending the newly restored trail. \nAlong this route you will be rewarded with an array of wildflowers until we reach the Yerba Buena road. From here we will hike along the ridge to the high point then have snacks on the water tank. \nWe will have 360-degree views of Mt. Lukens and the surrouding the Tujunga mountains. \nThis hike is posted with another meetup group. \nStats:\nLevel-Intermediate/NO BEGINNERS PLEASE!\nDistance-8-9 miles (approximate)\nGain- 2000 ft\nTerrain- maintained\, rocky & single track trails\nRestrooms- not available at trailhead.\nDogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKE\nParking- along the road by the trailhead \nDIRECTIONS: ***PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION***\nThe original trailhead is blocked due to the new residents who are not hiker friendly. Therefore we need to start at MILE MARKER 1.38 a short distance from the main trailhead.\nPlease find parking along the road. \nFROM THE 210 WEST-take the Sunland Blvd exit and turn right. Make a left on Oro vista Ave for 4.6 mile and follow the road to Mile Marker 1.38 which will be on the right hand side. (see photo attached).\nOro Vista Ave turns into Big Tujunga Canyon Road. \nCoordinates:\nhttps://goo.gl/maps/bLPvgR9Lvv5Q1hpR6 \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!\nLunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water/electrolytes\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them\, and THE 10 ESSENTIALS!\nHand sanitizer & mask (optional) \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. This update cannot be done via an app\, an iPhone or any other type of a hand-held phone. It must be done on a computer.\nFAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN YOU BEING EXCLUDED FROM MY EVENTS IN THE FUTURE.
