After this event\, as an option\, you’re welcomed to join Cristina (I’m sure she’ll come) and me for some BBQ at Rosies BBQ Kitchen. \nOPTIONAL ROCK SCRAMBLING:\nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/2/4/event_88560292.jpeg \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Dirt parking lot off Lilac Lane off of Santa Susana Pass Rd. at 9:00 am.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B015’49.7%22N+118%C2%B037’59.2%22W/@34.2637984\,-118.6353007\,924m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xd4929ee8a4883a91!7e2!8m2!3d34.2637942!4d-118.6331119 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 8:30 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Guadalasca Trail in Pt. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Cyn)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress with fixing the ruts on Guadalasca\, but long sections were devastated by the rain! Happily the lower sections we already worked have held up well\, but there is lots to keep us busy higher up. This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. Children must be over 7-years old to attend.

SUMMARY:Conejo Valley’s Changing Climate: Current Threats & Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by conservation ecologist Dr. Sean Anderson who will discuss the threat of climate change to the Conejo Valley\, and what we can do about it\, in the kickoff presentation of the Conejo Open Space Foundation’s (COSF) 2022 Speaker Series. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nAccording to Dr. Anderson\, we are living through an era of unprecedented environmental change in an area experiencing some of the greatest climatic transformations in North America. The Conejo Valley is now burning more frequently\, experiencing drier dries and wetter wets\, and seeing species fade away. While these and related changes are disturbing and sobering\, we are also ground zero for a host of approaches to building a more sustainable community which provide the seeds of hope. He will discuss the current state of affairs of our Conejo Valley region and ways out of the darkness in this presentation with ample time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Anderson is a broadly trained ecologist and conservation biologist who works on a variety of coastal zone management issues across California\, Louisiana\, the South Pacific\, and Middle East. He chairs the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands and is an elected or appointed member of numerous state\, federal\, and international governmental and scientific advisory boards. His energetic\, innovative\, and award-winning teaching and conservation efforts are often covered in the popular press and spawned the eponymous “Sean Anderson” character (played by Josh Hutcherson) in Warner Brother’s Journey to the Center of the Earth film franchise. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \nhttps://cosf.org/events/meetup/ \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:St. Francis Dam Disaster Site and Historical Landmark – Santa Clarita
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nHigh winds\, rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike. \nA little history: \nIn 1924\, construction began on the ill fated St. Francis Dam\, located in San Francisquito Canyon\, about 11 miles northeast of Valencia. Its chief engineer was William Mulholland. Construction completed in 1926. By 1928\, the dam was at its full capacity\, it held 19 billion gallons of water. \nOn the morning of March 12\, 1928\, muddy puddles began seeping through the walls of the dam. Mulholland and his assistant\, and the dam keeper\, inspected the area and verified that it’s safe. Twelve hours later\, at 11:57 pm\, the St. Francis Dam collapsed. Its tidal wave killed 431 people on record\, and hundreds more were just gone. Bodies were washed as far as Ventura\, 50 miles away\, and some were found on the shores of Mexico. \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=simple] \n***************************************

SUMMARY:BRIDGE TO NOWHERE (A WET AND WILD TREK)
DESCRIPTION:This will be an all day wet and wild event for the water lovers in our group. Please don’t sign up if you melt when getting wet\, because you’ll either get wet crossing or walking in the river. Not to mention one hell of a water fight will be taking place at the larger pools among all that sign on. \nBRING THOSE WATER CANNONS AND RIVER SHOES. \nThis Wednesday it’s time to cool off\, now that warmer weather is here\, by trekking along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River to The Bridge to nowhere. The route there will require many river crossings. Most likely we’ll be getting our feet wet\, so wear appropriate footwear for this. With all the cool water along the way\, there’s no excuse for overheating on this trek. It’s much slower navigating along this river than our usual hikes that have trails. We’ll be rock hopping and scrambling when not on some kind of trail. There are several “use” trails\, many of them marked with cairns. While there is no “correct” route\, they all do go to the same place\, so we’ll just keep trying to follow the river. Bring more water than you normally would bring for a 10 mile hike\, since it will be very warm in the canyon. I most likely will be staying cool by the WWW constantly splashing river water on me or submerging in pools as needed. \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Wednesday March 16th at 7:00 a.m. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. \nALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION: If interested in doing this event but our meetup location won’t work for you\, then meet us at the trailhead. From the Azusa Ave/CA-39 exit off the 210\, head north for 11.8 miles\, then turn right onto East Fork Road. In 3.3 miles\, stay to the right to keep on East Fork Road and in 1.9 miles make a sharp left onto Camp Bonita Road. This road ends at the trailhead. I’ll meet you there at 8:30 a.m. ONLY IF YOU LET ME KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE THERE. Be patient since I will be fighting traffic getting there.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’13.4%22N+117%C2%B045’54.2%22W/@34.237063\,-117.7672297\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xb9731c20ce51dc2b!7e2!8m2!3d34.2370634!4d-117.7650406 \nDISTANCE: 9.5 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1250’/1250′ \nTRAIL DESCRIPTION: River trails. \nTHE PACE: We’re going to stay together\, so no faster than the slowest hiker (a moderate pace). \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars before 5:00 p.m. \nLEVEL: Strong Intermediate trekker with the ability to rock scramble. \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

With all the cool water along the way there’s no excuse for overheating on this trek. It’s much slower navigating along this river than our usual hikes that have trails. We’ll be rock hopping and scrambling when not on some kind of trail. There are several “use” trails many of them marked with cairns. While there is no “correct” route they all do go to the same place so we’ll just keep trying to follow the river. Bring more water than you normally would bring for a 10 mile hike since it will be very warm in the canyon. I most likely will be staying cool by the WWW constantly splashing river water on me or submerging in pools as needed. \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Wednesday March 16th at 7:00 a.m. \nMEETUP Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. \nALTERNATE MEETUP If interested in doing this event but our meetup location won’t work for you then meet us at the trailhead. From the Azusa Ave/CA-39 exit off the 210 head north for 11.8 miles then turn right onto East Fork Road. In 3.3 miles stay to the right to keep on East Fork Road and in 1.9 miles make a sharp left onto Camp Bonita Road. This road ends at the trailhead. I’ll meet you there at 8:30 a.m. ONLY IF YOU LET ME KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE THERE. Be patient since I will be fighting traffic getting there.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’13.4%22N+117%C2%B045’54.2%22W/@34.237063-117.767229717z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xb9731c20ce51dc2b!7e2!8m2!3d34.2370634!4d-117.7650406 \nDISTANCE: 9.5 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1250’/1250′ \nTRAIL DESCRIPTION: River trails. \nTHE PACE: We’re going to stay together so no faster than the slowest hiker (a moderate pace). \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars before 5:00 p.m. \nLEVEL: Strong Intermediate trekker with the ability to rock scramble. \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=5330 Ponce Ave.:geo:-118.6205877,34.1679077

SUMMARY:Conejo Spring Trail Work Day and Lunch
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nCome and join us to fix up one of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails – the Santa Rosa Trail above the Wildwood Mesa! After a two year hiatus\, we are finally able to get together as a group to restore our local trails. Overdue for attention\, the Santa Rosa Trail has suffered a lot in the past two years. First with little rain and vastly increased use\, the trail was dusty with lots of small loose rocks. Then the rain this past December washed all that and more away. \nMeet at the INNER parking lot at Wildwood at 7:30 am to register and be ready to walk to the work area by 8. We will return at noon for a Thank You lunch. To speed up the sign-in process\, we would appreciate it if you could register online in advance at [https://cosf.org/events/register/](https://cosf.org/events/register/) \nThanks for registering in advance! \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here [http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml](http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml)\nand here [http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php](http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php) \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. Children must be over 7-years old to attend.

SUMMARY:Beach Walk and a Hike\, Carpinteria/Summerland
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \n**High winds\, fire\, or heat will cancel the hike.** \nThis hike is full of surprises and is worth the drive. From the Loon Point parking lot in Carpinteria\, we’ll walk just over a mile on the beach to the dog friendly Lookout Park. Restrooms are located here and I will definitely use it. We will then proceed through the Summerland neighborhood and into the back hills. These trails are unique as they skirt the property lines of mansions\, several horse ranches and citrus groves. We will venture into the Greenwell Nature Preserve\, hike through a forest\, and cross over a creek before reaching the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club\, then we’ll head back to Point Loon. \n**The local residents have opened their properties and streets for hikers\, in return please show them respect and talk quietly through ranches\, easements\, and neighborhoods.** \nThe hike is 6.5 miles with an 800’ elevation gain. All my hikes are slow paced\, social\, and stress free. As a team of great hikers\, we watch out for each other\, and never leave anyone behind. \n**Please remember to stay with the group\, there are a variety of landscapes and turns\, you don’t want to go on the wrong trail.** \nAfter the hike\, for those interested\, I plan to stop at the Sacred Space in Summerland\, sit in the gardens and sip on a cup of tea (http://www.thesacredspace.com\, 2594 Lillie Ave\, Summerland\, CA). Most likely some of us will end up having lunch at the Siam Elephant Thai restaurant ([http://www.siamelephantusa.com/](http://www.siamelephantusa.com/)) in Carpinteria. \n* We will meet at 9:15am at the Loon Point Beach parking lot\n* We will start hiking at 9:30\, promptly\n* Distance: 6.5 miles\n* Route type: loop\n* Low tide: 1:41pm\n* Trail type: beach\, single trails\, horse trails\, some neighborhood streets\n* Elevation gain: 800’\n* Speed: 2mph\n* Difficulty: Beginner – fit beginner\n* Dogs: On a leash per state law\n* Restrooms: Only at Lookout Park\n* Water Fountain: at Lookout Park\n* Parking: Free\n* Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall \nBring a minimum of two liters of water\, sunscreen/hat\, snacks for energy\, electrolytes \nWear good hiking boots/shoes. **It’s up to you what you want to wear on the beach\, we won’t be on it that long**. Long pants is suggested due to poison oak and overgrown shrubs and flora of all types. \n**DIRECTIONS** \n* Address: 2770-2850 Padaro Lane\, Carpinteria\, CA\n* Google coordinates: 34.415042\, -119.580304\n* Google map: [https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B024’54.2%22N+119%C2%B034’49.1%22W/@34.4138727\,-119.5828441\,922m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x9f1c62b658212511!8m2!3d34.415042!4d-119.580304?hl=en&authuser=0](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B024’54.2%22N+119%C2%B034’49.1%22W/@34.4138727\,-119.5828441\,922m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x9f1c62b658212511!8m2!3d34.415042!4d-119.580304?hl=en&authuser=0) \n**DRIVING DIRECTIONS**\nFrom the 101\, take Exit 90 to Summerland and turn left on Padaro. SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES - ARLINGTON PEAK via a new route
DESCRIPTION:SANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nWe will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK – Arlington Peak \nContinuing our Santa Barbara Coastal series\, we’ll do this one as an in and out trek. THIS WILL BE AN EXTREMELY TOUGHER TREK than the first ones in the series\, so please don’t sign on if rock scrambling along a steep ridge bothers you. Also\, don’t sign on if you have no experience with this type of terrain. We’ll be starting our hike at the Tunnel Trail’s trailhead at the end of Tunnel Rd. The fun begins in less than a mile along the Tunnel Trail\, as we leave it and head up a steep ridge line following a “use” trail and rock scrambling all the way to Arlington Peak. This will not be along the Dragonback ridge\, but instead\, along a new trail along a southern access to Arlington Peak. After that\, those that have a lot of energy left\, can tackle Cathedral Peak (an extra mile round trip) as an option which will involve additional scrambling as the rest kick back\, wait and rest.\nThere are three ways to get to Arlington Peak.\n1) It’s northern ridge from La Cumbre Peak\n2) Its Eastern ridge long the dreaded Dragonback\n3) Its southern ridge\nCDH has taken the first two routes and now will be taking the relatively new third route. \nThis area is a little over an hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day and be aware of the difficulties this route entails. \nAfter the hike\, those that are interested in stopping off at the Nugget restaurant in Summerland\, can join me. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: The Tunnel Trail trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road no later than 8:00 a.m.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’51.8%22N+119%C2%B042’45.9%22W/@34.4644014\,-119.7149437\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x9ebc2c2c8f7084f4!7e2!8m2!3d34.4643972!4d-119.7127547 \nPay attention to street parking signs in that area. Please be quite when arriving\, since this is a residential area. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 6:30 a.m. WE WILL BE LEAVING FROM THERE AT 6:40 a.m.. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about an 1 hour 15 minute drive to our meetup at the end of Tunnel Rd. in Santa Barbara.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’26.7%22N+118%C2%B051’38.8%22W/@34.1740754\,-118.8629737\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xd0cb7d8a6208886e!7e2!8m2!3d34.1740705!4d-118.8607853 \nDISTANCE: 6.2 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 2250’/2250′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: 6+ hours or whenever the slowest finishes \nTERRAIN: Single\, double track and “use” trails along with rock scrambling \nLEVEL: Strong Intermediate Trekker who loves to rock scramble \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks in Antelope Valley
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \n**High winds\, heavy rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike.** \nThis is a slow paced\, stress free\, social hike\, at 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 554’. We hike together as a team and leave no one behind. \nWere trekkin’ Vasquez Rocks and the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail)\, located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs\, where numerous movies\, commercials\, music videos and TV shows were filmed\, such as my favorite when Star Trek’s Captain Kirk battled the lizard “Gorn.” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s). The park features spectacular angled\, jagged red rock formations. Vasquez got its name after one of California’s most notorious bandits\, Tiburcio Vasquez\, in 1874 he used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. \nWe will meet at the visitor’s center at 9:15am with a start time precisely at 9:30am. \nIf there are not parking spots available at the visitor’s center\, keep driving down to the dirt parking lots\, you’ll find more room there. Please arrive earlier\, or after the hike if you’d like to walk through the visitor center (hours: 8-4) and learn more about the geology of this area. \nThere are restrooms and a water fountain at the Visitor’s Center. \nFrom the visitor’s center we will make our way to the famous rock formations and take some time to explore and climb them. SUMMARY:Kennedy Ridge Trail Exploratory (Ojai)
DESCRIPTION:## Details \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nCome and join me on this exploratory within the Santa Ynez mountains. I’ve hiked this trail many times in the past\, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve done it and I’ve been dying to see how it has changed over the years. Now is a good time to hike it before the heat. Weather report says it is will be 67 degrees out there in Ojai. The hike will be exposed! So the temperature will be at least ten degrees hotter so I recommend bringing at least 3 liters of water plus plenty of electrolytes. Back in the day I helped cut through this old overgrown forgotten trail along the Kennedy Ridge that reached up a mile over on to the Camino Cielo ridge line. Since then the trail has been cut through four more miles. At the time there were only 4 picnic benches along the way up. Now there are 10! I don’t plan on hiking to all 10 benches\, maybe only to the 5th bench. I don’t plan on making this hike too long either\, maybe 8 miles or less out and back. This will reach us to Camino Cielo ridge and a little beyond a mile or two. The views are great! and some boulders to climb! We will start the hike at the Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve to the actual trailhead Rice Canyon Rd. to the Kennedy Ridge connection and on our way up a mile or so steep up to Camino Cielo.\nMy cell # 805-208-3966 \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve at 8:00 am.\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011) \nDISTANCE: 8 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 2500′
