SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Wood Canyon Vista (Backbone) Trl in Pt. Mugu State Park
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nOur trails have taken a real beating over the past 2 years during the pandemic. With hordes of people taking to the trails instead of their gyms\, and not being able to gather groups of volunteers to help fix them\, many trails are in dire need of repair! \nFinally we’re able to start addressing the backlog of needed restoration work\, hopefully before the winter rains do much more damage. \nWe’ll be working on the very popular\, rocky and rutted Wood Canyon Vista Trail\, sometimes just called the Backbone Trail. This is a joint project with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nAt this time State Parks requires all volunteers to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll caravan from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. Children must be over 7-years old to attend.

Expect it to be crowded and muddy. \n“When Escondido Falls is flowing strong\, it is flat out one of the finest waterfalls around Los Angeles. The waterfall has an easy-to-reach lower tier that is 50 feet tall and a hard-to-reach upper tier that’s 150 feet tall and stunning in optimum conditions.” Hikespeak \nIt’ll be too muddy to attempt to-reach the upper tier\, so we’ll just have to enjoy it from down below. \nDogs\, with well behaved owners on leashes\, are welcome on this hike. Both will be muddy by the end of the hike!!! \nOPTION: As an option\, I might head out to see Zuma Falls after this hike which is a few miles away. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at parking lot on Winding Way at 9:00am: https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B001’34.0%22N+118%C2%B046’48.0%22W/@34.026108\,-118.7805471\,219m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80e818cf5df0e7e9:0xad4d8382c03a4e8f!2sWinding+Way\,+Malibu\,+CA+90265!3b1!8m2!3d34.0296069!4d-118.7759422!3m5!1s0x0:0xacfb117f2b33d317!7e2!8m2!3d34.0261081!4d-118.7799946 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: If you live out my way we can meet at the Agoura Hills park and ride at 8:15am and car pool from there:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B008’43.2%22N+118%C2%B045’37.9%22W/@34.145324\,-118.7627237\,869m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80e818cf5df0e7e9:0xad4d8382c03a4e8f!2sWinding+Way\,+Malibu\,+CA+90265!3b1!8m2!3d34.0296069!4d-118.7759422!3m5!1s0x0:0x88c84bcf4c546755!7e2!8m2!3d34.1453238!4d-118.760535 \nMEETUP PARKING FEE: $8 fee at small “marked” parking lot on Winding Way. SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES TREK-2 (Gaviota Peak & Hot Springs)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on one of CDH’s series of Santa Barbara Coastal Range treks. We’ll hike trails I’ve done before with some of you that are interesting with ocean views sometimes. These hikes are definitely meant to be taken at a slower non conditioning pace\, so that we can take in all the wonders this coastline range offers. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \n====================================================================== \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-2 (Gaviota Peak & Hot Springs) \nOur second trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll start out on the Trespass Trail and then take a side trail to a ridge with Pacific Ocean views and interesting rock formations before heading up to Gaviota Peak. From the peak we’ll drop down the Gaviota Trail to the Hot Springs. Those interested in at least soaking your feet can join me. Once we reach the cars\, if time permits\, as an option\, you can car pool to Nojoqui Falls County Park and hike an additional 1.5 miles round trip to the waterfall which should be flowing nicely after all the rain fall from the previous rains. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route. This area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day. \nLooking forward to sharing another Santa Barbara coastal range trek with you. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at 9:30 a.m.https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B030’21.5%22N+120%C2%B013’33.4%22W/@34.5059644\,-120.2281257\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x4bcca91e20277a49!7e2!8m2!3d34.5059602!4d-120.2259367There is a fee to park at the trailhead\, so park off the paved road leading up to the trailhead. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:45 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.5 hour’s drive to Gaviota State Park. \nRESTROOM: None\, so stop off at Gaviota State Park if you need to use one\, but allow time for that. \nDISTANCE: 7.5 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 2500’/2500′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker. \nDURATION: 5 hours \nTERRAIN: Single and double track trails \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nROUTE: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/gaviota-peak-and-hot-springs-92977ae \nDEBRIEFING: I’ll be stopping off at Mesa Burger in Goleta for a very late lunch.https://www.google.com/maps/place/Mesa+Burger+-+Goleta/@34.4293099\,-119.8730844\,461m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x80e9418deef16f41:0x8d9c81447d88bd41!8m2!3d34.4294627!4d-119.8720338 \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:WEST LION CANYON FALLS
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nThis hopefully will be a good time to see West Lion Canyon Falls with the recent rain we’ve had. We’ll see these falls via the following trails: Lion Canyon Trail and the Lion Canyon to Rose valley Connector Trail \nWe’ll have to follow a use trail south from the camp. It soon reaches the creek\, where 0.1 mile of moderate boulder scrambling (potentially difficult if water levels are high) brings us just below the waterfall. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the Corner of S. Rancho Rd and Halland Dr.\, Thousand Oaks at 7:00 a.m. \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. We’ll need to fill the cars up half full at this point due to the car shuttle needed once we get to the trailhead. \nSEE MAP ABOVE \nALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: For those that want to meet the group near the trailhead\, drive up Hwy. 33 to Rose Valley Rd. We’ll meet at that intersection at 8:15 a.m.https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B032’03.1%22N+119%C2%B014’19.4%22W/@34.534183\,-119.2408967\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x841948bcabb5dd23!7e2!8m2!3d34.5341831!4d-119.2387076?hl=en-US \nDISTANCE: 6 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 750’/750′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars by 2:00 p.m. and stop off for a debriefing at an Ojai restaurant. \nTERRAIN: Single track trails along with several stream crossings. SUMMARY:5th Annual ❤️ Day - Secret Trail/Topanga Lookout - Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. NEED HELP: go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nNow a Valentine’s Day tradition! \n \nA slight variation on one of my favorite loops hikes – this time we will take a few cars and start our trek from the Secret Trail on Mulholland Highway. We will take this trail up to the motorway\, but instead of following the fire road to Calabasas Peak\, we will take as many side trails as possible. \nOnce we conquer the peak\, we will head down to the junction\, where we begin our ridge line scramble through beautiful rock formations up to the Topanga Lookout\, from here the views are amazing\, we will see from the Pacific to Santa Susana Mountains. \n \nAt the Topanga lookout we will rest\, check out the current graffiti\, enjoy the magnificent views and have some snacks and/or lunch\, before we continue down the Stunt High Trail to where we met at the beginning. We will then need a few cars to drive the drivers back to their cars at the Secret Trail. \n \nThe Stats: \nDistance: 9 miles \nElevation Gain: 2\,000+ ft. \nDuration: 5 hours \nDifficultly: Intermediate \nTrail: Single track and class 1\,2 rock climbs \nParking Permit: Not required \nDirections: \nFrom 101 Fwy in Calabasas\, exit Mulholland Drive/valley circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr. for 0.5 miles\, turn right on Valmar Street and go for 1.2 miles\, turn right on Mulholland Hwy and go for 3.8 miles\, then turn left on Stunt Road and go for 1.0 mile and park at the turnout on the right hand side.

DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress with fixing the ruts on Guadalasca\, but long sections were devastated by the rain! Happily the lower sections we already worked have held up well\, but there is lots to keep us busy higher up. This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. SUMMARY:Conejo Valley’s Changing Climate: Current Threats & Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by conservation ecologist Dr. Sean Anderson who will discuss the threat of climate change to the Conejo Valley\, and what we can do about it\, in the kickoff presentation of the Conejo Open Space Foundation’s (COSF) 2022 Speaker Series. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nAccording to Dr. Anderson\, we are living through an era of unprecedented environmental change in an area experiencing some of the greatest climatic transformations in North America. The Conejo Valley is now burning more frequently\, experiencing drier dries and wetter wets\, and seeing species fade away. While these and related changes are disturbing and sobering\, we are also ground zero for a host of approaches to building a more sustainable community which provide the seeds of hope. He will discuss the current state of affairs of our Conejo Valley region and ways out of the darkness in this presentation with ample time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Anderson is a broadly trained ecologist and conservation biologist who works on a variety of coastal zone management issues across California\, Louisiana\, the South Pacific\, and Middle East. He chairs the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands and is an elected or appointed member of numerous state\, federal\, and international governmental and scientific advisory boards. His energetic\, innovative\, and award-winning teaching and conservation efforts are often covered in the popular press and spawned the eponymous “Sean Anderson” character (played by Josh Hutcherson) in Warner Brother’s Journey to the Center of the Earth film franchise. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \nhttps://cosf.org/events/meetup/ \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Guadalasca Trail in Pt. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Cyn)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress on fixing up Guadalasca over the past 3 sessions\, but long sections higher up were devastated by the rain in December!
