SUMMARY:LaCanada Flintridge WALK ABOUT + picnic
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a stunning walkabout for our slow\, old and WW (Walking Wounded) members to enjoy. It’s a 4+ mile walk though beautiful LaCanada Flintridge neighborhoods. The entire hike will have us on a dirt trail starting out in Hahamongna Watershed Park before linking up with the Flint Canyon Trail. If you enjoyed our walkabout along oak shaded trails in Montecito\, you’ll really love this area as well since we’ll be under a canopy of oaks all the way as we meander along trails in this exclusive area. \nHAHAMONGNA WATERSHED PARK:Hahamongna\, “Flowing Waters\, Fruitful Valley” in indigenous parlance\, is that rare spot in the Arroyo Seco where the mountainous watershed meets the urban plain. It is the connecting link between the San Gabriel mountains and the Los Angeles River. A gentle stream\, periodically punctuated by a flood\, flows into this basin\, nourishing five unique habitat zones that characterize only alluvial canyons near the mountains. Most sites like this in Southern California have been destroyed. \nFLINTRIDGE CANYON TRAIL:Flint Canyon Trail runs through the Flintridge area\, connecting Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on the east with the Cherry Canyon trails on the west. After passing under Oak Grove Drive and the 210 Freeway\, the trail meanders through a lovely\, undeveloped area with many oaks\, sycamores\, and a year-round stream before continuing into the heart of this beautiful area. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Meet at the Hahamongna Watershed Park at 9:00 am.https://www.google.com/maps/place/Oak+Grove+Disc+Golf+Course/@34.1918377\,-118.1769492\,1914m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x80c2a1eb5272e93f:0x48198dda8e18242a!2s525+S+Topanga+Canyon+Blvd\,+Topanga\,+CA+90290!3b1!8m2!3d34.0815122!4d-118.5980116!3m4!1s0x0:0x4a4a115a8ff50666!8m2!3d34.1927666!4d-118.1759754 \nRESTROOM: Yes\, we will be stopping off at the restroom within a quarter mile of the parking area. \nDISTANCE: About 4+ miles. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 400’/400′ \nTHE PACE: 2 mph. \nDURATION: 3+ hours \nOPTIONAL PICNIC: After the hike\, as an option\, you can enjoy a picnic under a beautiful oak canopy the park is known for. Bring your own lunch and avoid sharing. \nLEVEL: Beginner capable of walking 4+ miles. It can be a bit steep at times. \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972 \nCDC COVID POLICY: We’ll all wear a mask and practice CDC social distancing guidelines during this event. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD HAVE YOU EXCLUDED FROM MY EVENTS IN THE FUTURE. \nCDH POLICY: Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. SUMMARY:LAKE ELEANOR'S LOOP TREK (THE CAVE AND SENTINEL) - a rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:A LOCAL\, BUT CHALLENGING TREK \nSHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well \nTHE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains \nIf you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer\, then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop\, we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile\, hiking 3/4 mile on a trail\, trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails\, going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile\, and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done\, you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers\, you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor\, Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress\, becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from the last trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP LOCATION: Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 9:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time\, Energy\, Fear\, Pain\, Blood\, Sweat\, Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves\, trekking poles and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972 \nCDC COVID POLICY: We’ll all wear a mask and practice CDC social distancing guidelines during this event. SUMMARY:MWW HIKE - North Ranch Playfield Park & nearby paseos
DESCRIPTION:I’m starting a series of Monday walks for CDH’s slow\, old and walking wounded and will refer to them as MWW (Monday’s Walking Wounded) hikes. These easy walkabouts were on Friday\, but they will now be taking place on Monday’s as Friday hikes move into more challenging events. The goal is to help some of our members recovering from injuries to get back in shape as they join our slower and older CDH members on easy 2 mile walks/hikes with very little elevation gain. Join me if you would like to be part of this. It’s also a great way to get started. \nLOCATION AND TIME: North Ranch Playfield Park parking lot at 11:15 am.https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’51.0%22N+118%C2%B047’23.2%22W/@34.180833\,-118.790941\,462m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1808335!4d-118.7897769 \nRESTROOMS: Yes \nDISTANCE: 2 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 100′ \nLEVEL: Beginner\, slow\, old and walking wounded \nTERRAIN: This event will have us walking on paved walkways and trails\, \nMY CELL # IS: 805-358-5972 \nCDC COVID POLICY: We’ll all wear a mask and practice CDC social distancing guidelines during this event. SUMMARY:Topanga Lookout Loop\, 8 Miles\, 2\,000 ft. Gain
DESCRIPTION:Not my write up – someday I will type my own version – but George and Mark did such a great job\, why bother? \nThis hike is waitlist only – small small group due to Covid \n************************************* \n \nThis hikes offers great variety\, we will start with a climb on a ridge line through beautiful rock formations which will require some rock scrambling\, this will lead us to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains\, namely Topanga Lookout\, from here the views are amazing\, we will see from the Pacific to Santa Susana Mountains. \nRight before we reach the lookout\, we will pass by a huge rock formation\, which most of us will circumvent\, but if you feel the urge to climb it\, by all means go ahead\, as rest of us will cheer you on\, just make sure to bring some gloves. \n \nAt the Topanga lookout we will rest\, enjoy the magnificent views and have some snacks and or lunch\, before we continue our loop on a mostly shaded trail down to our cars. \n \nThe Stats: \nDistance: 8 Miles \nElevation Gain: 2\,000 ft. \nDuration: 4-5 hours \nDifficultly: Intermediate \nTrail: Single track and class 1\,2 rock climbs \nParking Permit: Not required \nDirections: \nFrom 101 Fwy in Calabasas\, exit Mulholland Drive/valley circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr. for 0.5 miles\, turn right on Valmar Street and go for 1.2 miles\, turn right on Mulholland Hwy and go for 3.8 miles\, then turn left on Stunt Road and go for 1.0 mile and park at the turnout on the right hand side. \n \n***** CDH POLICY ***** \nAny member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since Jan. 1st 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. \nMembers will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. If you sign up without doing this first\, you will be removed from the hike (trying this instead of a waiting list). If you have any questions about how to update your profile\, please message me. It can not be done through the app or mobile version of Meetup. You must log in using a computer\, or by going to the desktop version on your mobile device. \n*******************************************************************
