Here’s a chance to join me on what should be a new area for most of us to explore in Santa Barbara. \n======================================================================INFO I FOUND ABOUT PARMA PARK \nParma Park is enormous and a fabulous open space\, which makes it a popular place with hikers\, bikers\, and dog walkers. It is snuggled into the foothills\, where you will find live oaks and sage\, peace and quite and refuge from the sound of the highway. This is a very rustic park that has a couple of picnic tables and that’s it. There are no other creature comforts. \nFeatures: Alcohol Allowed\, Biking\, Hiking Trail\, Horseback Riding\, Parking On Street\, Passive Open Spaces\, Views\, Wildlife and BirdingDog Policy: Dogs Allowed On LeashResidents seeking a large open space park close to town may want to visit this park. It is the largest City open space park\, encompassing 200 acres of oak woodland and chaparral along Sycamore and Coyote Creeks. It is known for its history\, habitat\, and recreational uses including its popularity as a landing spot for paragliders and hang gliders. \nThe park provides passive recreation opportunities for hikers\, dogs on leash\, and equestrians. Mountain bike riders may use the park only on the fire/access road. Hang gliders and paragliders use the open grassland between the El Cielito and Mountain Drive entrance as a landing site. The main entrance along Stanwood Road includes a picnic area and equestrian staging area. \nThere are approximately six miles of trails including the Plateau Trail\, Creek Trail\, Stanwood Trail\, Ridge Trail\, and dirt fire/access road. A public trail easement also provides access via the Mountain Drive North entrance. For sweeping views of the City of Santa Barbara\, Montecito\, and the Santa Barbara Channel Islands\, take the Ridge Trail to Rowe’s table. Named for Rowe McMullen\, a long-time volunteer who helped establish trails in the park\, Rowe’s table is the highest point in the park at 775 feet. \nParma Park contains three major creeks and a diverse array of native plant communities including chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian forest\, coastal sage scrub\, and remnant patches of native grassland. We’ll hike a trail we’ve done before that will be interesting with views of the ocean. This hike is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES) \nOur first trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll visit the western half of the park which will take us to The Gaviota Wind Caves. We’ll take on several trails (Yucca\, Hollister\, Beach to Back Country\, Woodland) and the Trespass and Tunnel View Trails as well as a STEEP rugged ridge to the caves\, to give us a total of 8+ miles on this hike. This will be accomplished via a car shuttle. We’ll be spending some time exploring the rock formations where the wind caves are. You’ll want to wait for me bringing up the rear so as to not miss out on the various side trails that we’ll be taking to overlooks and caves. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route to the overlooks and the caves. \nThis area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day. \nThis trek will involve a car shuttle from our meetup point to the trailhead. \nLooking forward to sharing another Santa Barbara coastal range trek with you. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Just past the main entrance to Gaviota State Park no later than 9:00 a.m. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Take the 101 Fwy. to the Gaviota State Park exit. on the left side of the 101 Fwy. shortly after heading inland once you’ve reached Gaviota. SEE MAP ABOVE. Turn left and drive 0.5 miles to parking area along road which is .2 of a mile past the Gaviota State Park entrance. To save money\, avoid parking in the State Park since there’s a $10 fee to do so. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:15 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. She will explain common reasons why wild animals end up being brought to the Calabasas-based CWC and how they are rehabilitated. She will also talk about small changes that we the public can make to reduce our impact on wildlife and how to handle conflicts between people and animals. The mission of the 23-year-old CWC\, which has treated over 60\,000 animals representing 170 species\, is to protect native wildlife through conservation\, education\, and animal rescue and rehabilitation. \nMs. Guess\, who started at the nonprofit Center in 2012 as a volunteer\, was hired the following year as an animal care coordinator and then as the senior wildlife technician supervisor. Anyone wishing to camp overnight should make their own arrangements for camping. \nRed Rock Canyon State Park features scenic desert cliffs\, buttes and spectacular rock formations. The park is located where the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada converge with the El Paso Range. Each tributary canyon is unique\, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors. \nWe will begin our 9 mile loop by climbing to the top of the first of three ridges (which will account for most of the elevation gain and some easy scrambling) that allow great views of the Sierras to the north and the Gulch to the south. We will descend from the third ridge\, and enter the east end of the gulch for an easy mostly level hike enjoying spectacular rock formations all around us until we emerge from the west end and have a final ascent to return back to the trailhead. \nNightmare Gulch is a small\, colorful\, highly scenic canyon. The area attracts many birds of prey. To protect the raptor nesting sites\, this area of the park is closed to hikers and vehicle travel yearly from February 1 to July 1. The gulch has many side slot canyons just waiting to explore. Along the way\, we will turn into one to view a specific rock formation called Magic City. \nPlease be aware that there is NO established trail for this route and the hike will be cross-country through a desert environment. It will be important that hikers do not fall too far behind the leader. \nDogs are not allowed on established trails\, however\, as we will not be following an actual trail\, they are okay for this hike. Park rules state that dogs must remain on a 6-foot maximum leash and be accompanied by a person at all times. They must be cleaned up after and cannot be left unattended. \nBring a lunch\, snacks\, and adequate water (3 liters) for a desert hike. It may be very cold and windy in the morning\, so dress WARMLY\, but in layers that can be removed as the day goes on. \nDirections \nThe park is 120 miles north of Los Angeles\, via Interstate 5 and Highway 14 and 25 miles northeast of Mojave on Highway 14\, near Cantil. From Highway 14\, there is a clearly signed turnoff to Abbott Drive where the Ricardo Campground is located. We will meet at the trailhead\, which is a dirt turnout apx ¾ of a mile north of the Abbott Drive turnoff on the right hand side. It is the only obvious pull out for parking from Highway 14. While not clearly marked it should be somewhat obvious. Google maps also shows the parking area as Red Rock Canyon SP North parking lot. \nPark map showing trailhead location is also attached as a photo. \nFolks who would like to carpool can meet at the Starbuck’s restaurant parking lot at 16548 Soledad Canyon Road\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387\, off of the Sand Cyn exit on Highway 14 in Santa Clarita. \nMeet at the carpool location by 6:00 AM for 6:15AM departure. The carpoolers will stop for a final bathroom break at the Carl’s Jr in Mojave. Anyone driving directly to the trailhead should plan to meet there at 8:00 AM\, however carpooling is encouraged as there is limited parking at the trailhead.

With hordes of people taking to the trails instead of their gyms\, and not being able to gather groups of volunteers to help fix them\, many trails are in dire need of repair! \nFinally we’re able to start addressing the backlog of needed restoration work\, hopefully before the winter rains do much more damage. \nWe’ll be working on the very popular\, rocky and rutted Wood Canyon Vista Trail\, sometimes just called the Backbone Trail. This is a joint project with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nAt this time State Parks requires all volunteers to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll caravan from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. We’ll hike trails I’ve done before with some of you that are interesting with ocean views sometimes. These hikes are definitely meant to be taken at a slower non conditioning pace\, so that we can take in all the wonders this coastline range offers. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \n====================================================================== \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-2 (Gaviota Peak & Hot Springs) \nOur second trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll start out on the Trespass Trail and then take a side trail to a ridge with Pacific Ocean views and interesting rock formations before heading up to Gaviota Peak. From the peak we’ll drop down the Gaviota Trail to the Hot Springs. Those interested in at least soaking your feet can join me. Once we reach the cars\, if time permits\, as an option\, you can car pool to Nojoqui Falls County Park and hike an additional 1.5 miles round trip to the waterfall which should be flowing nicely after all the rain fall from the previous rains. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route.This area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on.
