SUMMARY:4rd Annual ❤️ Day - Secret Trail/Topanga Lookout LOLLIPOP
DESCRIPTION:Now a Valentine’s Day tradition – but this time with a COVID safe twist! Attendance will be EXTREMELY LIMITED to just a handful of people – waitlist only – priority given to those I’ve been hiking with during the pandemic and who I know respect the rules regarding masks and distancing. Hopefully next year we’ll be able to resume normal activities for the 5th anniversary of this fun and silly hike. \nWe will start and end our trek from a secret location and head up toward Calabasas Peak. Once we conquer the peak\, we will head down to the junction with Red Rock\, where we begin our ridge line scramble through beautiful rock formations up to the Topanga Lookout\, amazing views from the Pacific to the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAt the Topanga lookout we will rest\, check out the current graffiti\, enjoy the magnificent views and have some lunch\, before we continue down the Stunt High Trail. Then it’s back up Calabasas Peak Motorway (we’ll skip the peak and stick to the fire road this time) and back down to the cars \nThe Stats: \nDistance: 13+ miles \nElevation Gain: ~3000 ft. \nDuration: 7+ hours \nDifficultly: Intermediate \nTrail: Single track\, fire road and class 1\,2 rock climbs \nParking Permit: Not required \nTrailhead: Meeting location will be sent to those who are moved off the wait list.

SUMMARY:Ridgeline Between Templin Hwy and Lake Piru
DESCRIPTION:This trek would be an out-and-back\, first on a dirt road that overlooks a geologically dramatic canyon and then follows a little-known\, well-maintained\, motorized single-track trail over a ridgeline that heads toward Lake Piru. On two past attempts\, I with others have made it to the knoll that overlooks the knoll that should overlook Lake Piru. To get to that last knoll means another mile or two\, more elevation loss and then gain; and worst\, having to hike back from that point. If the group is willing\, we should be able to make it to that point. As long as the sky is free of clouds and haze\, expect the views to be stunning of this remote area of the southwest portion of the Los Padres National Forest\, with the prominent Cobblestone Mountain in the background. \nDistance: 8 to 12 miles\, out-and-back. \nElevation Gain: 2\,000 to 2\,500 feet. \nPace: About 2.5 miles per hour. \nDifficulty: Moderately difficult. \nMinimum level: Advanced beginners. \nWhat to Bring: Minimum 2 liters of water\, lunch and snacks. A face covering is mandatory when congregating with others in close proximity. \nMeeting Time and Place: 8:30 am at the intersection of Templin Hwy and Golden State Hwy (roughly 5 miles north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic). \nDirections to the trailhead from Woodland Hills: Take the US-101 East/South\, I-405 North\, and I-5 North all the way through the Santa Clarita Valley. Go up the grade above Castaic and take the first exit\, which is Templin Hwy. Make a left turn and go just pass the freeway to Golden State Hwy. Make a left and park on the east side of the road.

SUMMARY:The 101 Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon: A presentation by Beth Pratt
DESCRIPTION:Cross-Posted from the Conejo Open Space Foundation \nRegister now for the first of the 2021 COSF Speaker Events. \nPlease join COSF for a live online presentation by Beth Pratt who will share news on the Liberty Canyon wildlife crossing. Her presentation will be on Thursday March 11th at 6:30 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (https://cosf.org/events/register/) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so sign up soon! \nWhile this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated. \nBeth will discuss the importance of connectivity and wildlife crossings\, and give an update on the #SaveLACougars campaign. With the 101\, 405\, and other major roadways essentially trapping them in an island environment\, what are the future prospects for our native pumas? “As someone who spent most of my career working in remote wilderness areas\, my main priority is now urban wildlife conservation and creating co-existence strategies in our human spaces\,” she says. \nBeth has been the National Wildlife Federation’s California regional executive director since 2011 and is a lifelong wildlife advocate. She has spearheaded the efforts to raise funds and public support for a wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway at Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills. The crossing\, which COSF has pledged $10\,000 toward\, will ensure the safety and genetic diversity of the area’s mountain lions and other wild animals. With Caltrans finalizing design and engineering plans in July\, construction should begin in late 2021. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to https://cosf.org/events/register/ and fill in the form.

SUMMARY:THE RAZORBACK BOWL'S PEAK - Easier cross country route
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nLike others in our group\, I just can’t get enough of this area. (it’s so unique and isolated).PAST EVENT THERE via a much tougher routehttps://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30505729/486440049/#486456295Have you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but the events were for strong intermediate trekkers. Here’s a chance to gain the top of the RAZORBACK via its back door and look down into its bowl below (see picture of the bowl above). This route will be a much easier way to get there than what we have attempted in the past. Although this trek will be geared for our intermediate hikers that like an easier off trail hike\, our stronger hikers will enjoy this as well. Just remember that it will be at a slow intermediate pace. It’s a long day for a short trek but so worth it. \nI had our much stronger Friday hikers in mind when I created this easier excursion into The Los Padres National Forest. \nMICRO SPIKES will make trekking there so much easier\, especially if there’s still snow on the ground. \nIF YOU HAVE TO BE BACK BY A CERTAIN TIME\, PLEASE DON’T SIGN ON BECAUSE YOU MAY NOT MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: meet us at 8:45 am. at The Flying J Truck Stop (42810 Frazier Mountain Park\, Frazier Park)https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’01.0%22N+118%C2%B053’10.5%22W/@34.8169462\,-118.8873463\,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!1m6!3m5!1s0x80e9efbe677d9285:0xf025c089e1668cd8!2sFlying+J+Travel+Center!8m2!3d34.816763!4d-118.887325!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8169435!4d-118.8862521After meeting here we will then caravan 25 minutes to the Razorback area to begin our adventure. \nDISTANCE: 4 miles of 100% cross country trekking along a sandy stream bed and easy but steep ridge lines. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 900’/900′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars by 3:00 p.m. and stop off at Frazier Park for an optional debriefing in Frazier Park. \nTERRAIN: Trails? We don’t need no stinking trails to do this! We’ll first follow an old road a bit before following a sandy ravine to the base of a ridge leading us up to the backdoor ridge to the bowl. \nLEVEL: Intermediate Trekker with off trail experience. \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nPOST HIKE DEBRIEFING: optional \nNO DOGS ALLOWED \nMake sure you wear a mask and practice CDC distancing guidelines.

SUMMARY:STORMING THE CASTLE via the CAVE OF MUNITS and then a frontal assault
DESCRIPTION:THE CAVE’S ENTRANCE \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nCASTLE PEAKJoin me on a task to storm the castle (Castle Peak) via two attempts in El Escorpion Park. The first assault will be a maneuver on its west flank via a cavern passage (Cave of Munits). This will require some class 3 rock climbing (using your hands to assist) as you can see from the photo above of (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/1871301/31389991/) one of our past attempts. When this attempt fails\, we’ll regroup below and go for a frontal attack on the castle itself. One of the obstacles on this course will be a hive of bees in the castles ramparts. By way of a traverse maneuver we’ll overcome this and overtake Castle Peak. Having conquered the castle\, we’ll break to enjoy the views our conquest has to offer. \nAccording to Chumash oral tradition\, this cave was the home of a very powerful shaman who met his demise after murdering the son of a tribal chief. \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 8:00 a.m. (Boots on\, ready to go) \nLOCATION: Near El Escorpion Park in West Hills on Highlander Rd. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nELEVATION GAIN: 1200’+ \nDISTANCE: 4 miles \nDURATION: 3+ hours \nPACE: 2.5 mph on the trails and much slower on the climbs \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker looking to challenge themselves \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972 \nMake sure you wear a mask and practice CDC distancing guidelines.

SUMMARY:LAKE ELEANOR'S LOOP TREK (THE CAVE AND SENTINEL) - a rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nA LOCAL\, BUT CHALLENGING TREK \nSHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well \nTHE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains \nIf you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer\, then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop\, we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile\, hiking 3/4 mile on a trail\, trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails\, going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile\, and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done\, you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers\, you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor\, Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress\, becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from the last trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP LOCATION: Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 9:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time\, Energy\, Fear\, Pain\, Blood\, Sweat\, Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves\, trekking poles and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972 \nCDC COVID POLICY: We’ll all wear a mask and practice CDC social distancing guidelines during this event.

In doing this loop we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile hiking 3/4 mile on a trail trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from the last trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nSince we are living in the age of Covid\, I am limiting this event to a max of 10 people due to social distancing. \nTHESE ARE THE RULES:1. ONLY people I have been hiking with will be moved to the going list.2. You must follow all safety guidelines regarding Covid. This means 6-ft social distancing\, and wearing a mask.3. We hike as a group and will not leave anyone behind.4. Do not attend this hike if you have other plans. \nA beautiful hike on April Fool’s Day that is definitely no joke! We will begin our trek at Eaton Saddle trailhead\, walking along the Mt. Lowe Road and re-group at Markham Saddle. Then continue on the road above Bear canyon to Tom Sloan Saddle and take a short break at the junction. Our journey will continue with a gradual ascent on the TSS. On this trail we can appreciate the beautiful restoration made possible by Restoration Legacy Crew in 2018. We’ll take a connector trail and pass through some historic ruins including the Alpine Tavern. After checking out the sites contine our trek to Inspiration Point and Muir Pk. After summit pics\, we will retrace our steps to IP for a lunch break under the nice shaded veranda. On a clear day Catalina Island can be seen. The return back to our cars will be a gradual incline on a fire road. \nLast time I was here\, there were small patches of poison oak along the Bear canyon trail but can easily be avoided since it is not directly on the trail. \nStats:Level- Strong Intermediate/NO BEGINNERSDistance- 10 milesGain- 1500′ (approximate)Terrain- rocky fire road\, single track trailsRestrooms- not available at trailheadDogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKEParking- dirt road at the trailheadA National Forest Pass is required. \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.Lunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them. DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nWESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains \nTired of mundane hikes\, then join me on one of my favorite local treks as we make our way up to one of the loneliest peaks in the Santa Monica Mountains. You’ll see why it’s seldom bagged when you take on this little beast. We’ll follow a “use trail” from Hwy. 23 which is extremely steep and requires a bit of class 3 rock scrambling as well. \nThis little monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. The pay off will be at the top of Westlake Vista Peak where you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood\, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This 3+ mile 900’ gain is nothing to scoff at. So\, if you feel that you have what it takes and have hiked on tough little hikes before\, sign up for this local monster if the site of blood doesn’t bother you\, because there may be some. \nMEET UP LOCATION: Exit the 101 FWY at Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks. Head south on Westlake Blvd. to Potrero Rd. Turn right and go about 400 yards to Camberwell Pl. SUMMARY:THE RAZORBACK'S BOWL PEAK - Easier cross country route
DESCRIPTION:The weather is much better up there now\, so I’ve set this trek up there again. \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: meet us at 8:30 am. at The Flying J Truck Stop (42810 Frazier Mountain Park\, Frazier Park)https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’01.0%22N+118%C2%B053’10.5%22W/@34.8169462\,-118.8873463\,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!1m6!3m5!1s0x80e9efbe677d9285:0xf025c089e1668cd8!2sFlying+J+Travel+Center!8m2!3d34.816763!4d-118.887325!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8169435!4d-118.8862521After meeting here we will then caravan 25 minutes to the Razorback area to begin our adventure. \nDISTANCE: 4 miles of 100% cross country trekking along a sandy stream bed and easy but steep ridge lines.ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 900’/900′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars by 4:00 p.m. and stop off at Frazier Park for an optional debriefing in Frazier Park. \nTERRAIN: Trails? We don’t need no stinking trails to do this! We’ll first follow an old road a bit before following a sandy ravine to the base of a ridge leading us up to the backdoor ridge to the bowl. All this may be snow covered. \nLEVEL: Intermediate Trekker with off trail experience. \nSUGGESTIONS: We most likely will encounter packed snow along the way\, so bring trekking poles \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nPOST HIKE DEBRIEFING: optional \nNO DOGS ALLOWED \nMake sure you wear a mask and practice CDC distancing guidelines.
