We’ll start where the Mesa Peak motorway intersects Coral Canyon and head south. This is a fire road along the crest of the mountains above Malibu. It’s all dirt. We’ll also do a short trek to Mesa Peak which is an extra 8/10ths of a mile. \nWhen we get back to the start point\, we may also make an optional extra trip towards the top of Bulldog motorway and possibly beyond. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at 9 am at the intersection of Coral Canyon and Mesa Peak Motorway. Note that Mesa Peak Motorway is a dirt road. \nPARKING: PLAN A is to park along the road near the intersection of Mesa Peak motorway and Coral Canyon. This is because Google seems to think that you can’t go any farther than that on Coral Canyon.\nHowever\, if you can go farther\, do so and we’ll meet at the parking lot about a quarter mile farther on Coral Canyon. The goal is to take a short cross country side route to the Bell Hartman Mine which I’ve been to before as well as some trails in the Chilao area including a steep rocky trail to Mount Mooney. We might follow a canyon that feeds Alder Creek if time permits. There are pools\, most likely dry this time of the year\, that will be my final objective. After that we can stop off at Panera Bread for lunch in La Canada.\nAn Adventure Pass will be needed to park at Chilao – so we need to make sure that every car taken up there has one. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location. Those who want to carpool from Woodland Hills\, can meet me at the corner of Leonora and Ponce Avenue. Ponce is the first street east of Fallbrook. Also\, members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. We’ll hike a series of trails we’ve taken before that will be interesting with views of the ocean on most of them. Starting north at Gaviota\, we’ll conclude the series in Montecito. This series is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nROCK GARDEN AND WHITE MOUNTAIN \nThis next trek in the Santa Barbara series will take us to The Rock Garden and White Mountain. After checking those two areas\, we’ll drop down the Tunnel trail to the Rattlesnake connector trail that will take us to our cars initially dropped off on Gibraltar Rd. We’ll do this one via a 15 minute car shuttle. This will be a 70% downhill hike consisting of 4+ miles overall. As we’re halfway down the Tunnel Trail we’ll be able to view Mission Falls. There will be some rock scrambling in THE ROCK GARDEN an extremely rocky area\, but the rest of the hike will be on a well traveled trail. It’s been closed since the 2009 Station fire and is now officially opened. I had the privilege of hiking this trail two weeks ago. Not only is it beautiful but it is overwhelmingly filled with wildflowers. So\, I would like to share this newly restored trail with others before the wildflowers vanish. \nWe will start by scrambling down a use path off the main road. We will walk along the creek until we reach the Gold Canyon wash for about a mile\, just before we start ascending the newly restored trail. \nAlong this route you will be rewarded with an array of wildflowers until we reach the Yerba Buena road. From here we will hike along the ridge to the high point then have snacks on the water tank. \nWe will have 360-degree views of Mt. Lukens and the surrouding the Tujunga mountains. \nThis hike is posted with another meetup group. \nStats:\nLevel-Intermediate/NO BEGINNERS PLEASE!\nDistance-8-9 miles (approximate)\nGain- 2000 ft\nTerrain- maintained\, rocky & single track trails\nRestrooms- not available at trailhead.\nDogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKE\nParking- along the road by the trailhead \nDIRECTIONS: ***PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION***\nThe original trailhead is blocked due to the new residents who are not hiker friendly. Make a left on Oro vista Ave for 4.6 mile and follow the road to Mile Marker 1.38 which will be on the right hand side. From there it will be mostly downhill as we follow Waterman’s trail less backbone to Three Points (another PCT junction). Along the way we should be seeing lots of wild flowers along with spectacular views as well as lots of rock outcroppings to check out. \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location. This is one of my favorite loops around the historical Mt. Lowe Railway. \nWest Fuji 3681′\nPanorama Point (vista point) 4550′\nMuir peak 4668′\nInspiration Point 4510′\nEcho Mountain 3207′ \nFirst we will head up the Lone Tree trail to our first peak West Mt. Fuji.\nThen\, we will ascend a steep fire break with some sandy slopes and some rock scrambling to Panorama Point and take a short break to admire the views.\nNext\, we will continue climbing the ridge less than a mile to Muir Pk. From here its all downhill. Whoooohooooo!!!\nWe will be descending a semi-steep trail until we reach a fire road then half a mile to Inspiration Point. \nBeer will be served under the shaded veranda at IP. JUST KIDDING!!! I want to see who is paying attention. But believe me at this point you’ll wish you had a cold one! \nAfter our lunch break and re-energizing\, we will descend Castle Canyon until we reach lower Sam Merrell trail and make a quick stop at the Echo.\nThen we will continue our trek staying together as a group because I will be taking a short cut trail back to the cars. Go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nThis is not a conditioning hike. My hikes are designed to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the trails. As a team\, we stay together and hike as fast as the slowest hiker\, sometimes it could be me. We will stop at various points to wait for the slower hikers. \nToday’s hike is 5.25 miles with an elevation gain of 780’. We will begin and end the hike at the historic Trails Café on Fern Dell Drive. We will meet at 8:30 and start at 8:45. Give yourself time to arrive and find parking\, it can get crowded. Watch for No parking signs. \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks\, electrolytes\, hat\, sunscreen. Wear good hiking/walking shoes\, bring poles if you need them. \nBeginning at the Café\, we will hike the West Trail for about a mile before crossing over W. Observatory Road. After crossing the road\, the West Trail merges with the Mt. Hollywood trail that leads up to the top. Bring your cameras because you’ll definitely want to take pictures of the breathtaking views of Los Angeles. We will continue down the Mt. Hollywood trail and stop at Dante’s View\, the Berlin Forest\, and the George Harrison tree before reaching the Griffith Observatory. At the observatory\, we will hang out for awhile and walk around its grounds. On the last leg of our hike\, we’ll continue down the Observatory trail end our day at the Trails Café with lunch and a slice of pie.
