SUMMARY:BIKE RIDE - Lake Balboa to Burbank and back
DESCRIPTION:BIKE RIDE FROM LAKE BALBOA TO BURBANK AND BACK\nThis is an easy event for a change which has very little elevation gain with a great place to have breakfast or lunch along the way.\nThe Orange Line bikeway runs along the Orange Line in the San Fernando Valley. We’ll be starting at the Swan Boat Rental Parking lot at Lake Balboa and head out to Valley College. From there\, we get onto Chandler Blvd and eastward. Then we continue until we hit the Burbank bike path and take it to its eastern end. Along the way back\, we will stop to eat at the Coral Cafe in Burbank. The food there is worth the trip alone. \nNote that on Chandler Blvd\, you will be riding in a bike lane on the road and not on a bike path. There is also about a 1 mile detour between the Sepulveda and Van Nuys stations due to construction. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nROUTE: \nMEETUP TIME: 9:30 AM \nEXACT LOCATION: Swan Boat Rental Parking Lot at Lake Balboa \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS FROM 101: Head north on Balboa Blvd. After Burbank Blvd\, there will eventually be a right turn that takes you into Balboa Park. Follow that and the road will turn left\, crossing a small creek and sending you northward. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo OAB ~ Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. \nJoin us as we go up and over Kanan Dume Rd and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. This hike is only about 4.6 miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. There may be wildflowers. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.3 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel.
