SUMMARY:Hike Bommer Ridge into Laguna Coast Wilderness - Loop
DESCRIPTION:The total distance for this hike is 4.5 miles with about 650 ft. of elevation gain. There are great mountain and ocean views along the ridge. \nWe are going to start on Bommer Ridge Trail and take this to Lizard Trail. SUMMARY:Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. In the spring\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a half mile to Velarde Dr.( next to Wildwood Elementary School) and turn left and then turn left again at Castillo Circle. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:I’m sure we will see plenty of wildflowers blooming in Dos Vientos. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Malibu Creek: Bulldog to Castro Crest
DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous)\nWe will be hiking through the eastern most portion of Malibu Creek State Park\, up to the rarely seen\, North East backside of Castro Crest – via the Bulldog fire road. The views are stunning\, all the way to the top\, with sandstone monoliths casting dramatic shadows across the land. \nThis hike starts at the easternmost (2nd) intersection of Crags Road and Seminole. We will meet there at the corner\, and then hike a short distance\, through the community further up Crags Rd before entering Malibu Creek State Park.\nPlease pay attention to the signs for permitted parking along the road\, and if you can\, carpool with someone. – an option for those who are Carpooling – meet and then carpool from Reagan Ranch parking area at Mulholland & Lake Vista Dr. As we will be entering and leaving from the Malibou Lake neighborhood trailhead\, and parking is limited\, please be considerate.\nThe hike distance is a little over 8 miles (out and back) with 2150 elevation gain. We will take our time\, pause occasionally to catch our breaths\, enjoy the views\, and finally make it to the top. Upon completing the ascent\, we will turn right for 1/8 of a mile to the rock formations and caves on Castro Crest. \nPreparation\nThe climb and descent are fully exposed\, so be prepared with sun protection\, at least a liter of water\, trekking poles\, and electrolytes. \nPlease Read Below In Its Entirety\nPlease review our guidelines. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and have a social event\, right on the trail. We’ll share snacks and beverages. For the return\, we go back the way we came. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute and Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know.
