WILSON CANYON PARK TO WHITNEY CANYON PARK via a car shuttle
I’m looking to take on a mild hike after doing some challenging treks recently. This one will work just fine for those of you that would like to join me as I stay on trails during the 8.7 mile trek from Wilson Canyon Park to Whitney Canyon Park. We’ll be using a car shuttle to accomplish this task.
WILSON CANYON PARK:
Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains above the northeastern San Fernando Valley community of Sylmar, 240-acre Wilson Canyon Park offers visitors secluded wilderness, a network of easy-to-moderate trails, a rich variety of plant communities, and abundant wildlife within minutes of a densely populated urban area. Popular with hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers, bird watchers, and families on picnics, Wilson Canyon Park features verdant oak woodlands, a year-round creek lined with native alders, sycamores, and bigleaf maple, and commanding vistas.
Easily accessible from the 210 Freeway, Wilson Canyon Park serves as a popular portal into the adjacent Angeles National Forest and its extensive network of trails.
WHITNEY CANYON PARK:
Located in the City of Santa Clarita near the offramp of the 14 Freeway and San Fernando Road, the beautiful 442-acre Whitney Canyon Park in the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor provides outstanding examples of coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, chaparral and riparian corridor vegetation, with year-round springs and at least ten sensitive species. Besides its importance for wildlife movement in a critical corridor between the Santa Susana Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains, Whitney Canyon provides a regionally significant entrance into the Angeles National Forest.
Several popular trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians are accessible from Whitney Canyon.
TRAILHEAD MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at The Whitney Canyon Park at 8:00 a.m. SEE MAP ABOVE FOR EXACT LOCATION IN PARK
EARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:15 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. If meeting here, you must state so in the comments so that I’m aware of it. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas ($5/person). It’s about a half hour drive to our destination.
DISTANCE: 8.7 miles
PACE: 2+ mph
DURATION: Hike 5 hours followed by optional lunch to be announced later.
DOGS ALLOWED: No dogs allowed since this hike uses a car shuttle
