Whiting Woods in La Crescenta
Distance: 6< miles
Elevation Gain: 1,500″> elevation gain
Time: 3< hours
Level: Moderate to advanced
Adventure Pass is not required.
Direction: From the I-210 to La Crescenta, take the Pennsylvania Ave. exit and head south for about 0.5 miles. Stay on Pennsylvania, and it soon becomes Honolulu Ave. Turn right on Whiting Woods Road. Drive 0.3 miles and park at the end of the road. We’ll meet at the yellow gate at the TH.
This is a residential neighborhood. Please be respectful and keep the noise down until we start on the trail.
This will be a slow-paced hike.
Whiting Woods Trail in La Crescenta leads to the Verdugo Motorway. It’s six miles with 1,500-foot elevation gain loop. It starts out on a beautiful shaded trail, which will lead us to the challenging part of the hike. It climbs less than eighth of a mile with a 200+ feet of elevation gain. This portion is very steep.
There is poison oak at the beginning of the trail but totally avoidable.
Then once we get to the top, we will be on the Verdugo Motorway, and we’ll head back down via the fire roads to our cars. It is a moderate to advanced hike, and I don’t recommend it for beginners. Bring plenty of liquids and nourishment you will require. It should take about 3 hours plus or minus.
This hike has all the views from the ridge of La Crescenta and the Angeles National Forest to the north and all of Glendale and the Valley beyond to the south and west.
