Hiking Iron Mountain
13 miles r/t
RSVP will open 3 days before the event…
This will be the standard hike up Iron Mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains. This is an average of slightly more than 20% grade for the entire hike.
It should take about 7 hours to hike the 6.5 miles to the peak and about 4 hours to return.
This trail is well defined for the most part up to Coldwater saddle, but with some sections that are slippery due to steepness.
Beyond the saddle the trail gets significantly more difficult. The grade can be quite steep and this portion of the trail is unmaintained, meaning that rather than well-formed switchbacks, the trail goes straight up the ridge at rather steep grade. Coming down this trail can get a little dicey – trekking poles are recommended.
Sunscreen is advised.
There is NO water above the Heaton Flat campground (0.5 miles from trailhead), so plan on bringing a significant amount of water. Most people choose to cache 2 liters of water at the Coldwater Saddle (4.2 miles from trailhead). If you choose to do this, mark your water in some fashion so you can identify it upon return. I have seen 20 or 30 liters of water cached in the small clearing for people on the trail and you could easily grab the wrong bottle. A simple piece of masking tape works…
I would expect 5 or 6 liters of water is required for the overall hike. I recently (9/9/2018) did this and 5.4 liters was NOT enough.. but the temperature was in the 90s. In February the temp will likely be cold, so appropriate clothing should be used.
Bring lunch and snacks.
