I have an unexpected weekend off at the end of April, so looking to get a small group together to do an overnight backpack on the Sespe River Trail to Willet Hot Springs before it get too hot.
The Sespe River Trail just barely missed being scorched by the Thomas Fire, so the area is green and beautiful right now and the water is flowing well. Daytime temps should be perfect for enjoying and playing in the river, and night time temps cool enough to enjoy the hot springs tub at Willet.
Mileage to Willet Camp is 9.8 miles one way with very minimal gain/loss. We will cross the river several times en-route. From what I hear, the trail is exposed to the sun a lot of the time, so I would like to get an early start on Saturday morning.
I booked a campsite (#7) at Rose Valley Campground for Friday night. It is a small ( only 9 site ) campground tucked away pretty much in the middle of nowhere on the road to the Piedra Blanca Trailhead. It is in the burn area so there is little shade left standing, but we wont be there long and it is only 2 miles from the trailhead making it very convenient. There is a bathroom at the campground, but no piped water. Make sure you bring all the water you will need for camping Friday night. We wont have to pack much in with us on the backpack, as we will be crossing the water several times and can filter as need be.
Campground fee to be split among attendees.
Keeping this group small, so there is a waitlist. If I have never backpacked with you before, please message me with your experience.
