Santa Barbara Mission and Museum of Natural History + picnic at Rocky Nook Park

March 27 @ 9:15 am - 2:15 pm

Join me on yet another Santa Barbara outing as we visit the Santa Barbara Mission and Museum of Natural History before hiking into rocky Nook Park.

MISSION SANTA BARBARA: Situated on 13 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Mission grounds include the beautiful Mission church, Historic Cemetery and Mausoleum, a nine-room museum of historical artwork and artifacts, and multiple lush gardens, including La Huerta Historical Garden, which features authentic and ancient Mission-era plants and trees.
ADMISSION:
Adults (18-64 years): $12.00
Seniors (65+ years): $10.00

SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: Experience their interactive exhibits for all ages—paired with the Central Coast’s only planetarium—on 17 acres of oak woodland along Mission Creek. Learn about the Santa Barbara region’s unique and diverse natural history, and then go outside to explore nature in the Museum’s Backyard.
ADMISSION:
Adult (18-64 years): $15.00
Senior (65+ years): $12.00

ROCKY NOOK PARK: This 19-acre park is set among the oak and sycamore trees overlooking Mission Creek. Just minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, the park offers shaded picnic areas, short trails, large sandstone boulders and a restroom.

The above are all basically next to each other along a portion of Mission Creek. We can take advantage of this and enjoy all three areas in a five hour window.

ITINERARY:
– 9:15 to 10:30 tour mission
– 10:30 to 10:35 drive to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural history.
– 10:35 to 12:30 check out the museum and grounds (very short trail)
– 12:30 to 2:15 walk to Rocky Nook Park with back packs and lunch for a picnic there after a 1.2 mile in and out trail. Those not interested in having a picnic lunch, can leave after the hike.

This area is over an hours drive from Thousand Oaks, so keep that in mind when signing on. To make it easier for you, I’m setting up an earlier meetup in Thousand Oaks at the corner of Robert S Haaland Dr. and S. Rancho Rd. in the park in ride there.

MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Mission Santa Barbara at 9:15 a.m. There’s a large free parking area at this location. We’ll meet just outside the entrance. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT LOCATION).

EARLIER MEETUP TIME, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 8:00 a.m. WE WILL BE LEAVING FROM THERE AT 8:00 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive to our meetup at The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.

Trail statistics are approximate.  For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
