Salkantay Trek 5 days/5 Nights, Peru (Valencia Hiking Crew).

The Plan

We will separately book our flights and accommodations. To embark on the trek, we will be departing from Los Angeles on Friday, April 15, 2022. Once in Cusco, we’ll spend a day site-seeing while acclimating to the altitude of the Andes mountain range. On Monday, we start our trek with a local trekking company, Alpaca Expeditions, to take us on a 5-day / 5-night guided and porter supported backpacking trek. After our trek, we’ll return to Cusco for another full day of site seeing and shopping, before returning home to Los Angeles or going to other optional destinations.

The dates of the event are tentative and posted to check if people are interested. But I’m 90% inclined to do the trek before doing another trek in Italy on the next half of 2022. I’ve used Alpaca Expeditions to do the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu and a hike of Huayna Picchu in the past. And based on experience, they are excellent in what they do. Recently, I inquired from them about the trek. And these are their responses.

1. If I’m travelling alone, can you put me in a group so that I don’t have to pay for single occupancy?
If you are traveling alone, you will join a set group but we can not put you in the same room as any other person due to the pandemic and everyone of our hikers should pay the $30 USD in order to get their own room in Aguas calientes.
2. How much is the deposit for the trip?
$200 USD per person.
3. Considering the covid situation in Peru, is the deposit refundable? Or can it be used for a later date?
It is not refundable but this amount can be used for a later date ( within the next 5 years)
4. How much is the fee for the trek?
$650 USD per person + $30 USD( SINGLE ROOM)
5. I’m planning to do the trek on April 2022. Is it a good time to do it?
Yes, it is a perfect time and it is part of the dry season. So,you will have great weather.

Short write up from Alpaca Expedition:

The Salkantay Trek is a favorite among hikers for the Humantay Blue Lagoon, glass cabanas, and our exclusive campsite overlooking the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu!
Considered to be one of the best treks in the world, the Salkantay Trek offers a variety of Peru ecosystems; from deserts and jungles, to mountain passes, and azure lagoons!
Highlights: Stellar scenery, coffee farm, glass cabanas, lagoons, and campsite overlooking Machu Picchu.
Considerations: In order to include Hamantay lagoon (Turquoise Lagoon) and Llacatapata (amazing camping spot with Machu Picchu in the distance) we need to leave the afternoon before the trek starts making this trek 5.5 days and 5 nights.
Season: March 1st through January 10th.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
