These are two of my favorite peaks near the Monte Cristo Campground. This will be a fun excursion near the Pacifico Mountain area. Rabbit 5307′ & Granite 6600′ Peaks are on the Sierra Clubs 100 peaks list. From the trailhead we’ll gradually ascend up a dirt fire road for about 3 miles, passing by Black Cargo Mine through Monte Cristo Creek Canyon. Then we will contour south along a steep slope and scramble up a use path with lots of small rocks, very low brush and small yucca plants that can be avoided on the slope. After the steep climb & short break to our first summit, we can continue the fun by descending 300 ft on the north side of Rabbit to a saddle, then climb approximately 1500′ and summit Granite Peak. On the return we will re-trace our footsteps, dropping 1500 ft and climbing back 300 ft returning to Rabbit Pk and following the same route back to our cars, so it should be a great workout. We will re-group when necessary. Both peaks offer 360-degree views of the surrounding San Gabe’s. It is possible to bag 4 peaks (aka Monte Cristo Loop) as I have done in the past, but that is a long day and l will save that one for a cooler season when the rain has stopped.
The hike should take about 4-5 hours just depending on the group and time spent on the summit. We’ll eat lunch at Granite Peak. It’s a beautiful summit.
Distance: ~8 miles/gain: 3300′ (Rabbit 1800′, Granite 1500′)
Difficulty: strong intermediate/advanced
Water/Restrooms: available in the campground
Dogs: not on this hike
Parking: Adventure passes are not accepted. Paid parking is available in the campground or you can park at the small turnout near the trailhead or across the street from the Monte Cristo sign.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW:
Please do not sign up if you are not comfortable with off-trail rock scrambling, with steep sections. No plus ones! DO NOT ATTEND THIS HIKE IF YOU HAVE OTHER PLANS. This is a beautiful area and we may want to spend time admiring the views.
Heavy rain cancels the hike.
WHAT TO BRING:
A positive attitude. Snacks/lunch At least 2 liters of water, Lug soles with good tread, Poles if you like/have them. Depending on the forecast dress in layers.
From the intersection of I-210 and Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2), drive north on Angeles Crest Highway 9.5 miles to Angeles Forest Highway. Turn left (North), drive 9.9 miles to the entrance to Monte Cristo Campground on the right.
