PIRU CREEK SOUTH OF PYRAMID LAKE (AN EASY WET & WILD TREK)
This is a chance to hike with some of the WWW members on a easier version of their Wednesday madness treks.
WARNING!!!!!!! THERE WILL BE SERIOUS WATER FIGHTS DURING THIS TREK – NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM BEING A TARGET OF THE WWW (WEDNESDAY’S WILD WOMEN). I KNOW THAT VERY WELL, SINCE I’VE BEEN THEIR TARGET MANY TIMES.
The weather is starting to change (warming up), so we’ll stay cool by hiking along Piru Creek. It’s below Lake Pyramid and it will have flowing water. Upper Piru Creek above Lake Pyramid was a big disappointment in July two tears ago. The dam releases water to keep a continuous flow in this portion of the creek. It’s here where the WWW will most likely get crazy again and use me as target practice with their water weapons. On our previous hike there, my back went out before the WWW had a chance to get me wet. That ruined our hike, so here’s an easier version of it as a make up for that hike.
Overall the hiking elevation gain/loss is around 300′ during the 7+ mile in and out trek.
THE GOAL: To check out a portion of this remote wilderness canyon.
EARLIER MEETUP LOCATION, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes.
FINAL MEETUP LOCATION: If interested in doing this event but our earlier meetup location won’t work for you, then meet the group at the Templin Hwy exit off the 5 Fwy. (34.569240, -118.689168) at 8:00 a.m. SEE MAP ABOVE FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION. Be patient since I will be fighting traffic getting there.
DISTANCE: At least 7 miles
ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: At least 300’/300′
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Rock and creek scrambling along Piru Creek
THE PACE: We’re going to stay together, so no faster than the slowest hiker. It’s very easy to misplace a Trekker in this environment.
TERRAIN: We’ll follow a trail when we can, otherwise we’ll follow the creek.
DURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars no later than 4:00 pm, but you never know how long an an event will be the first time you attempt it. SO, IF YOU HAVE TO BE SOMEWHERE LATER THAT DAY, THIS HIKE WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU.
LEVEL: Intermediate Trekker who can handle at least 7 miles and a 500′ gain.
MY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
