Map and compass reading short course-and it’s free!

May 4 @ 7:30 am - 10:00 am

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING ON:

Space is limited to 8 students.

First priority is for regular Thousand Oak Hikers members. When you RSVP you will go on a waitlist.

Learn how to use a map and compass together and how to use terrain features locate your position on a map. Course is an introduction to the subject. Longer and more advanced courses are offered at cost by REI, Sierra Club, and local guides and I recommend you take one of these after taking my course.

This is a 2.5 hour short course at Wildwood Park (the Conejo Valley one). It’s free and I will provide copies of topographic maps and compasses (please don’t bring a compass as it just slows us down to use different styles).

You will need a sharp pencil, eraser, and a clip board or hard writing surface for 8.5″ x 11″ paper. If you have a GPS bring it too but don’t go out and buy one for this. IF YOU USE READING GLASSES PLEASE BRING.

My professional background includes making geologic maps. As you might guess knowing how to read, and locate oneself on a topographic map is a key step in making geologic maps in the field. We will cover several subjects in the course: 1) Topographic maps: what they show, scales, and how to read. 2) Determining map locations using the terrain, compass, and GPS. 3) Map datum and projection, on-line map resources, and a tad about software. 4) And my favorite: Why you don’t need any of this if you pay close attention to the terrain, where you are headed and where you have been, and the useful but now little used art of field sketching the terrain.

During the course we will be walking less than 1 mile on trails and make less than 300 ft elevation gain. Please bring your usual hiking stuff: water, snacks, sunblock, sweater, etc. I have limited the class to 12 students so I have plenty of time to interact with individuals (6 from Trailblazers and 6 from Geo-hiked).

Please be prompt for the meet-up point.
