• What we’ll do
This is a literary hike. There are four rules pasted below. Please join only if you can acknowledge you have read the book and can hike to this magical spot to share your thoughts on the work. The book is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This is one of a series of hikes within a YEAR OF BANNED BOOKS!
The hike is an intermediate uphill climb on fire road and single track trail on a spectacular ridge from Griffith Park’s Merry-go-round parking lot 2 to Dante’s View, where we can discuss the book over snacks. Total gain ~1200 feet of gain and 5ish miles. Bring a potluck item to share and a headlamp as you may need to help illuminate. Sunset 7:29, no real moonlight expected. Illumination is needed! Bring your notes on the reading and snack to share.
Lithiker house rules:
1. Read the book. Please do not join unless you’ve read at least 80% of the book. I know you read it in high school or college but that was a long time ago. Read it again. Movies do not count.
2. Hike happily with others who read the same book. Please do not join unless you can hike at least a few miles at a moderate pace 2mph) and transport yourself safely home.
3. Enjoy lovely snacks and talk about the book in some beautiful place as the sun sets. Bring something to share. In winter months, please bring warm clothes and be prepared to sit and talk for an hour or more.
4. Enjoy the intellectual stimulation and free exchange of ideas sparked by your lovely fellow lithikers and feel inspired by the natural beauty of our lovely Southern California landscapes. We do not judge works of literature by the standards of our bizarre times, but by those of their own context. Although we may inform them with our own experience, we do not dwell in political correctness or identity politics or insist on stupid postmodern literary analyses of the sort imposed on our plastic brains when we were poor subjects of the academy.
• What to bring
water, hat, appropriate hiking footwear and attire, knowledge of and ideas about the work, snack to share, headlamp or flashlight for night hikes, jacket. A really awesome snack would be appreciated. Rain will move it indoors.
