LAKE ELEANOR’S LOOP TREK (THE CAVE AND SENTINEL) – a rock scrambling adventure

BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.

A LOCAL, BUT CHALLENGING TREK

SHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well

THE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains

If you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer, then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop, we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile, hiking 3/4 mile on a trail, trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails, going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile, and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done, you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers, you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor, Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress, becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well.

Check out our photos from the last trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
