Inspiration Pt. & Muir Pk via Tom Sloan Trail

May 15 @ 7:30 am - 1:00 pm PDT

Let’s hike the Tom Sloan Trail that the Restoration Legacy Crew has beautifully renovated. We will begin our trek at Eaton Saddle, walking on the Mt. Lowe Rd. through Mueller Tunnel, regrouping at Markham Saddle. The next stop will be at the Grand Canyon H2O tank. Here we will admire surrounding views of the San Gabe’s such as Brown Mtn., Mt. Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak. We’ll hike above Bear Canyon to the Tom Sloan Saddle and take a short break at the junction. Our journey will continue with a gradual ascent on the new Tom Sloan Trail. We can appreciate the hard work and beautiful restoration for two miles until we reach a connector trail. We will pass by some historic ruins including the Alpine Tavern. After checking out the sites we’ll head southeast passing Inspiration Point and continue on the road a short distance before climbing to Muir Pk 4688′. After our summit pose, we will retrace our steps to Inspiration Point 4714′ for a lunch break. The final hike back to our cars at Eaton Saddle will be approximately 2.8 miles

Stats:
Level: Strong Intermediate/Advanced/NO BEGINNERS
Distance: ~10 miles r/t. Gain: ~1500+
Pace: No faster than the slowest hiker
Time: 4-5 hours depending on group.
Type: Exposed, wide, rocky fire road until we reach the shaded, single track/dirt trails on Bear Cyn/TST/Muir.
Water/Restrooms: Not available at trailhead.
Dogs: Not allowed on this hike.
Parking: NFS Pass is required. (Two parking lots available, on opposite sides of the road).

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: The first 3.2 miles are downhill, so it will be a quick descent. The uphill may slow us down on the return. This is a popular trail, please arrive early for parking.
There are bouts of poison oak along the Bear Canyon Trail but can easily be avoided since it is not directly on the trail.

What to bring: A positive attitude. lunch/snacks, electrolytes, at least 3-4 liters of water, sunscreen, Lug soles with good treads. Poles if you like/have them.

DIRECTIONS:
From the 210 West take exit 20 for CA-2/Angeles Crest Hwy toward La Cañada Flintridge Turn right onto CA-2 E/Angeles Crest Hwy., go north. At 9.5 miles, you will pass Clear Creek Ranger Station continue straight for about 4.5 miles to the junction with the Mount Wilson Road at the Red Box Ranger Station. Turn right drive about 2.3 miles to the Eaton Saddle trailhead (there is a parking area here on both sides of the road).
