This will be a snow adventure to Mt. Baden-Powell, another in the Hundred Peak Section…
Likely, there will be enough snow to warrant snowshoes, but it is not absolutely required. This is subject to change due to weather conditions. However, even if you don’t have snowshoes, you MUST have micro-spikes. No one may go on this without at least micro-spikes (not Yak-Tracks or some similarly flimsy traction assistance…. I want to see metal spikes). If you have crampons, of course those are good enough as well.
The temperatures may be in the 20s… seasonal. You should plan for that, and also plan for high-winds. Baden-Powell is very often very windy above the edge of the ridge (the last 1/2 mile before the peak). That same wind blows the snow off the peak, leaving hard-pack snow and ice. Hence the hard requirement for spikes.
If you have never hiked on ice, you may want to consider stopping at the Wally Walden tree, which is up on the ridge. There are great views from there and you’ll still feel a sense of accomplishment. You should only choose to go on to the peak if you are confident in your footing, are not tired and have trekking poles that you can use to provide additional purchase in the snow/ice. Having said that… it might be a calm warm day
Current conditions and forecast will be posted here and in the Comments section closer to the event.
