This will be a snow hike up the Baldy Bowl Trail.
Replacement for the Iron Mountain hike. This will be higher, but much less treacherous than Iron Mtn…
Meet near the bathrooms on Falls Road.
About 4,000′ EG
About 7.7 miles R/T (out and back)
This will start out as a dry trail, but as we approach the ski hut we’ll hit snow. This will be okay with micro-spikes for the first mile of snow, but when we approach the upper ridge, you will need crampons and trekking poles (with snow baskets, not normal hiking baskets). You may wish to have snowshoes to avoid post-holing.
We will not be coming down the Devils Backbone, though depending on who is on the trip, and at what skill level, we might decide to come down Register Ridge. If Advanced hikers want to do that, we can. We’ll have to play it by ear and see what the snow conditions are at 9,000′. If it is very icy, then coming down Reg Ridge is ill-advised, but if it is soft, then crampons will provide sufficient purchase to navigate down.
We will also practice glissading down into the small bowl on the ridge as we go up. You need to have your waterproof pants for that…
The Ski Hut will be open this weekend according to the Sierra Club website.
Bring lunch to eat at the ski hut, and it is customary to leave a small donation in the box on the kitchen wall.
I expect it will take about 3 hours to go up the 4 miles, but it could take longer, depending on the conditions. I would also expect about 2 hours to return.
