I scouted out a return to Griffith Park on some familiar trails for most of us. This fire road trail hike will consist of a moderate pace on a wide – 8-12 foot wide trail that will lead up to a set of picnic benches on a small trail. This small trail is a short part of the middle of this hike,
After stopping for a break at the benches, we will return to where we started on this out and back hike of under 3 miles that will occupy us for[masked] hours. I did the hike myself in the rain and mud on Saturday and found it to be pleasant and easy for most hikers. I kept a moderate pace and anticipate the elevation between[masked] feet. I know the elevation for Los Leones from the Palisades is just over 1100 feet and this is easier than Los Leones.
I will be starting from the UPPER MERRY GO ROUND parking lot at the Sierra Club steps which are at the far end of the lot. On Saturday, there were outhouses there and there is a regular rest room building on the opposite side of the steps. I will be keeping an eye on this trail leading up to Saturday evening. The hike will start at 6:00pm, back at the cars by 8:00 with a park closing of 10:00.
People should keep in mind that although Griffith Park is the largest park in LA City and has a 24 hour a day staffed park ranger team, hiking in this park can be dangerous if you are not familiar with the near 55 miles of trails. This park is surrounded by freeways and streets and has many amenities to take avantage of and enjoy. Various stops will be made to admire the views, water break, or catch your wind.
Bring: good, lug shoes, a jacket, water, flashlight, and a snack
Keep in mind that this will not be a fast hike and that nobody will be left behind. Hiking can be a fun activity for everybody and lets enjoy Griffith Park together.
