Fourth of July hike to West Fuji
A short, steep but sweet hike to West Mt. Fuji is a guaranteed butt and thigh buster. This is a great way to start the holiday by getting a workout before the fireworks commence. We’ll take a single track trail up the steep ridge on the east side of Rubio Canyon to the Lone Tree trail. Sections of the route include class 2 rock scrambling. Just before the summit we will go off trail and follow a used path to check out a small mine. We will continue the climb to the peak. On the high point, we’ll share drinks/snacks and admire the 360-degree views of the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains. On the return, we will descend the same way with a slight detour on the Lone Tree-Pavilion Connector trail that goes into the Rubio creek bed. We will follow the dry wash back down the canyon to the same area where we began our ascent. This will be a loop hike.
Level: strong intermediate/advanced
NO BEGINNERS PLEASE!
Distance: 5 miles, gain ~3000’
Water/restrooms: none at the trailhead.
Dogs: not on this hike.
What to bring: A positive attitude. At least 1-2 liters of water, snacks/drinks to share, hat, sunscreen, trekking poles if you wish/have them.
Parking: free parking along the Rubio Canyon/East Loma Alta Drive or across the street from the Debris Basin.
Important to know: There may be some poison oak along the connector trail but its easily avoidable. Shorts are fine to wear on this hike. There is a possibility that the hike will be finished earlier. It just depends on how much time we spend on the summit. I do not plan on rushing anyone and want to enjoy the morning. We will meet across the street from the Debris Basin.
