(Extreme) Cactus to Clouds

May 4 @ 3:10 am - 6:00 pm

This will be the Cactus-to-Clouds hike, or, Cactus-to-Clouds-to-Cactus, depending on whether there is any remaining ice on the slope on the north side of Grubbs Notch.

We will start at 3:10 AM from the Palm Springs Art Museum.

This is a 9,000′ EG hike over 9 miles (Skyline Trail) followed by another 2,000′ EG up the next 4.5 miles (Sid Davis Drainage) to get to the peak.
We’ll then return via Sid Davis back to Long Valley and make a determination then if we are going to go back down the Skyline, or take the Tram down and get a taxi back around to the trailhead.
Total distance for C2C option, about 19 miles.
Total distance for C2C2C option, about 28 miles.

Water water water…
Don’t kid yourself. There is NO water on the first 9.5 miles of the trail as you gain 9,000′. This could be as much as 5L or 6L for some people, and should include electrolytes.

Food.. we will need to consume close to 1,000 Calories while on the Skyline Trail, if you are going to take 8 or 9 hours to do that (some people do).

I expect the temperatures to be moderate all the way up with a hiking speed of about 2.2 mph.

Trail statistics are approximate.  For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
