Easy Hike Series: Loop Around the Santa Fe Dam Rec Area Lake
O.K., now that things are easing up somewhat, let’s try starting up again L.A. Hiking Group’s Easy Hike Series with one of its easiest hikes – the loop around the Santa Fe Dam recreational area reservoir/lake (SFDRA) which is located in Irwindale, between Duarte and Azusa, at the intersection of I-605 and I-210. Here it is in Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Santa+Fe+Dam+Recreation+Areaemail@example.com,-117.9665925,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2d8195a6dc963:0xf52684245b9a88c5!8m2!3d34.111239!4d-117.950113. And here is the SFDRA’s Website: https://parks.lacounty.gov/santa-fe-dam-recreational-area/. There is a parking fee of $10 ($5 for seniors, i.e., peeps over 65).
We’ll meet up at the entrance of the parking lot located at the eastern-most end of the lake. Directions: after you pass the “toll booth” at the entrance to the rec area, you will come to a stop sign. There, do not turn left or right, but, go straight ahead for 100 meters/yards. Then, turn left and you will be at the entrance of the parking lot.
The 3.3 mile loop trail around the lake that we’ll be taking is a super easy hike – good for reasonably fit beginner and intermediate hikers and advanced hikers who’d like to take it easy and “mellow out.” It’s dead flat with absolutely no elevation gain and will take less than an hour and a half to complete. The first mile is on pavement, beach sand (!) and grass with the remaining 2.3 miles on dirt, gravel and paved road. Besides being easy to navigate, the terrain is also very scenic with plenty of mixed foliage, i.e., lush growths of leafy shrubs and trees interspersed with an abundance of desert cacti and even an odd palm tree here and there. And, since this is a nature conservancy area, there is quite a bit of wildlife present, as well, mainly in the form of wetlands birds, e.g., herons, egrets, coots, mallard ducks and geese. And all of this is surrounded by magnificent vistas of the San Gabriel mountains making this one of the most scenic hikes in the L.A. metro area.
In observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures (and to avoid getting ticketed by local law enforcement), this event will be limited to 20 participants who will be divided into two groups of ten hikers each. Additionally, the members of each group will be required to wear face coverings and observe social distancing of 6 ft. between each participant.
