DOUGLAS FAMILY PRESERVE and THE ARROYO BURRO BEACH IN SANTA BARBARA

April 19 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm PDT

Join me on another CDH beach and bluff hike on Santa Barbara’s Douglas Family Preserve. This was the best in the CDH series of beach and bluff hikes. We’ll hike a series of trails on the Bluffs as well as a beach walk below. There’s miles of easy trails to satisfy our need to enjoy the outdoors at this location.

The park supports several native habitats including southern oak woodland, coastal bluff scrub, coastal sage scrub, riparian (creek) and annual grassland. The park includes a variety of trees, including coastal live oaks, Monterey pine and Monterey cypress. Non-native ornamental plants remain from the property’s past use as a nursery, along with other exotic vegetation. Staff and volunteers have performed habitat restoration at the park, including providing habitat for the monarch butterfly.

This area is a little over an hours drive from Thousand Oaks, so keep that in mind when signing on. To make it easier for you, I’m setting up an earlier meetup at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the the corner of Robert S Haaland Dr. and S. Rancho Rd.

FIRST HIKE: We’ll first hike the bluff

LUNCH: The Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach which is at the trailhead parking. BOATHOUSE (http://boathousesb.com/)

SECOND HIKE: After lunch we’ll walk along the beach below the bluff

MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: The Santa Barbara’s Douglas Family Preserve at 10:00 a.m. There’s a large free parking area at this location that serves The Douglas Family Preserve, The Arroyo Burro Beach County Park and The Boathouse.

MEETUP DIRECTIONS: Use the following directions as a guide when looking up the trailhead location on Google Maps:

Take the 101 Fwy. to Santa Barbara and exit 100 at Las Positas Dr. Turn left on Las Positas Dr. and follow it 1.8 miles to Cliff Dr. Turn right on Cliff Dr. and drive .2 mile and turn left into parking lot. SEE MAP ABOVE FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION IN PARKING LOT.

EARLIER MEETUP TIME, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Transit Center at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 8:45 a.m. WE WILL BE LEAVING FROM THERE AT 8:45 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about a 1 hour drive to our meetup at The Douglas Family Preserve.
